KOTA KINABALU: In less than a week, the city police have solved 20 burglary cases involving losses of RM150,000 following the arrest of 10 suspects.

City police chief ACP Jauteh Dikun said the four groups of suspects, which are not related, were arrested separately by police from the Karamunsing Crime Investigation Department (CID) in a series of operations around Manggatal, Inanam and Luyang between March 17 and March 20.

Police also recovered about RM150,000 of stolen items such as jewellery and money, tools and weapons used by the suspects, and a stolen Toyota Vios car which was used by one of the groups in their criminal activity, said Jauteh.

"The first operation was made in Manggatal on March 17 where three foreign suspects were arrested at an unnumbered house in Kampung Lokub.

"Investigation showed that this group was involved in 10 burglary cases around Manggatal since early this year," he said at a press conference at the city police headquarters in Karamunsing here yesterday.

"The second operation was made the following day (March 18) when police nabbed a foreign suspect in Inanam who had just burglarised a premises. Two of his accomplices, however, managed to escape and a manhunt had been carried out to trace them," he said, adding that police also seized the stolen Toyota Vios car and an iron safe from the suspect.

On Wednesday, March 19, four people, including a foreign man, were arrested by police for involvement in several burglary cases in Luyang.

On March 20, the police arrested two local men for burglary cases in the same area, said Jauteh.

Jauteh added that the four groups are not related but were involved in house burlgaries.

He said, the 10 suspects, including five locals, in their 20s and 30s, had been remanded for investigation under Section 457 of the Panel Code for housebreaking, which carries a jail term up to 14 years and also liable to a fine or whipping on conviction.

Jauteh said following the operations, police believed they had solved 20 burglary cases around the state capital.

"We will not stop here. We will continue to carry out more operation and investigation to ensure the state capital crime index will drop," he said.

Airlines urged to lower fares temporarily

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Association of Tour and Travel Agents (SATTA) urges all airlines to lower their fares temporarily for two to three months in order to stimulate the tourism industry following Malaysia Airlines (MAS) missing flight MH370.

SATTA chairman Dato' Seri Winston Liaw believes that this short-term strategy will achieve mutual benefits for both parties without affecting the airlines in the long run.

Speaking at SATTA's 20th anniversary dinner here on Thursday, Liaw said the travel and tourism industry was the most challenging industry, as well as the most fragile. However, Liaw said industry players should not be discouraged by negative incidents.

He pointed out that the industry still fared well and tourist arrivals to Sabah still increased a substantial percentage despite a few incidents last year, including the Lahad Datu intrusion.

"Thanks to the effort of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, and Sabah Tourism Board (STB), we look positively to our targeted goal."

Liaw said this year was Visit Malaysia Year and that the missing MH370 had affected the industry slightly.

On Wednesday, tourism industry players had a meeting with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun, Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Pang Yuk Ming and STB officials where they discussed the impact of the missing jet on the industry.

Liaw said industry players should take action before they were impacted by the incident.

"Masidi has said that before anything happens, we should take precautionary steps to prevent any negative impacts on the tourism industry."

Seeing the presence of airlines' representatives at the event, Liaw took the opportunity to urge the airlines to help the industry by lowering their fares for two to three months.

He said airlines could also do promotions like SATTA or Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) fairs to attract people to visit Sabah.

Liaw believes that this measure will achieve mutual benefit for both parties and would not affect the airlines in the long run.

Liaw is also confident that the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment and STB will achieve the target of over three million tourist arrivals this year.

KOTA KINABALU: Four eateries in the state capital were ordered closed for business for two weeks by the Health Department for flouting the Food Act 1983.

Environment Health Officer (enforcement chief) Jamse Suladi said 118 eateries at Alamesra, Kingfisher, Anjung Senja, Grace Point, Perdana Park, UMS and Karamunsing Kapital, were inspected by enforcement personnel during a two-day operation which began on March 18.

"Four eateries have been ordered closed for business for committing offences under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983, while several eateries were issued with compound notices for minor offences," he said yesterday.

Meanwhile, Suladi said the purpose of the operation was to ensure premises owners and operators complied with the Food Act 1983 in food preparations, equipment hygiene and cleanliness of premises.

"A couple of premises have failed to comply with the prescribed standards required of them to open an eatery business.

"A couple of premises have also been found to have rodents and cockroaches running around, which are very dangerous for customers," he said, adding that the purpose of the operation was not to take any legal action against the owners of premises but more towards educating them on food hygiene.

Mosque committee member lodges report over alleged mismanagement of fund

Posted: 21 Mar 2014 09:31 AM PDT

TUARAN: A member of a mosque committee here lodged a police report claiming he had received threats from the committee chairman after exposing alleged mismanagement of the mosque fund.

Mejal Munabih, 45, who said he is an information liaison for Umar Al-Khatab Mosque of Taman Telipok Ria, claimed the chairman and several other individuals tried to intimidate him after he continuously brought up the issue of mosque fund during meetings.

"I asked about the financial report and how the money was utilised but they kept shutting me off every time. This caused me to become suspicious and when I tried to get to the bottom of it they started to become verbally hostile," he told The Borneo Post.

Mejal said he eventually decided to bring the matter up with the Islamic Relious Affairs Department (JHEAINS) and a letter was issued by the Tuaran Mosque Administration Coordination Officer directing the committee to submit a five-month financial report.

A copy of the letter provided by Mejal stated that failure to provide the report in due time would result in JHEAINS auditing the mosque as provided by laws.

"Even after I get the JHEAINS involved they still refused to provide the financial report or any explanation about the money. I kept asking them about mosque's collection and that I would not hesitate to lodge a police report if they mismanaged or embezzled the fund.

"That is when they started threatening that they would tell the police that I am a syndicate member if I don't back off from the case. It is this absurdity that finally made me to go to the police," he said.

Mejal, in his police report lodged at the Tuaran Police Station, stated that one of the individuals had confronted him and tried to force him to withdraw his report to JHEAINS.

"They can do what they want and I will not quit for I know I am doing what is right," he said.

PKR Tuaran not surprised by Fairu’s move to join UPKO

Posted: 21 Mar 2014 09:31 AM PDT

TUARAN: Parti Keadilan Tuaran respects the decision by the group led by Fairuz Bandar to leave the party and join UPKO last Wednesday.

The acting chairman of PKR Tuaran, Gaibin Ransoi, said in a statement yesterday that he was not surprised by Fairuz's move as he was formerly in Barisan Nasional under Umno Tuaran, before joining PKR.

"His entry into UPKO is a natural move for him because he is now back to BN," Gaibin said.

"He also needs to find a political platform after he lost his position in the Tuaran division after the former Tuaran PKR chairman, Hj Ansari Abdullah was sacked from PKR after the last general elections."

However, Gaibin said he was certain the number of former PKR members who followed Fairuz to UPKO was a lot less than the 100 as claimed.

"But whatever it is, the move by the group has no effect on the strength of PKR Tuaran division, as the core leaders who are truly dedicated to the party's struggle are still with the party," Gaibin added.

"And the current development in the party at the central level is strengthening the people support for PKR."

Gaibin also said that at the moment, the division is gearing up in preparation for the party's general meeting to be held in May this year during which the divisional leadership will be revitalized with new blood.
