Headmen should represent community interests Posted: 03 Sep 2014 07:13 AM PDT Today we speak to James Nyurang, headman from Tg Terpalit, Baram who comments on the latest statement by Telang Usan Assemblyman Dennis Ngau that communities should 'acquire as much knowledge as possible' about the Baram Dam Project. Mr Nyurang is one of the leaders of the battle against the Baram Dam and he says that headmen are responsible for representing the interests of each village and not to act as puppets of the government. We also speak to Miku Loyang from Sungai Asap and Michael Jok from SCRIPS on the issue. And human rights lawyer Lateefa Koya speaks about the latest government crackdown regarding the Sedition Act 1948. Lateefa says the government has repeatedly announced to repeal the act, but it is increasingly being used against activists, academics and politicians. Lateefa urges the government to keep to their promise and to immediately repeal the act. A loyal listener Aki Lang calls the show to express his dissatisfaction that recent RFS broadcasts have been jammed. He asks that whoever is behind the attack to stop as everyone has the right to voice their opinion and the right to freedom of expression is enshrined in the Federal Constitution. And we bring you a special report from our very own 'DJ Papa Orang Utan', Peter John Jaban who was recently interviewed by Malaysiakini. Jaban urges overseas East Malaysians to sign a petition for self-determination which will be forwarded to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki Moon. All this and more, stay tuned! |
Posted: 02 Sep 2014 03:56 AM PDT Today we speak to Human Rights Lawyer, Latheefa Koya who says it is unacceptable for any parties to block or jam Radio Free Sarawak broadcasts because the Federal Constitution of Human Rights guarantees freedom of speech. Ms Koya states that Malaysia is far behind in respect to human rights that allow freedom of speech as there are various acts that prevent it, such as the Sedition Act. And we speak to Nicholas Mujah and villagers from Simunjan who share with us that they are appealing to the government to return about 5000 hectares of native lands that have been encroached on. The encroachment has affected about 93 families from 3 villagers. The communities are now blockading against the company and are fielding an appeal to the high court which ruled against them in April 2013. And we have a caller from Long Umang, Baram who reports that there is no sign that the bridge will actually be built in Long Lama, the villagers are still using the ferry to cross and being charged as much as RM15 per time. And we hear from our very own commentator Christina Suntai on the issue of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board acting against smallholders. Stay tuned! Undilah PKR! |
‘Large Dams Just Aren’t Worth the Cost’ says top consultant Posted: 01 Sep 2014 05:38 AM PDT On today's show we bring you a special report from an article in the New York Times entitled – 'Large Dams Just Aren't Worth the Cost'. A long-term dam consultant has concluded that large dams currently under construction will have 'disastrous environmental and socio-economic consequences.' And we interview Mr Edward an oil palm smallholder from Lapok. He questions why the MPOB are still suggesting that local smallholders are stealing fruit but not making a police report against them. Where has the slogan 'People first, performance now' gone? And PKR Sarawak Chief Baru Bian expresses his dissatisfaction with the lack of development in Sabah and Sarawak compared to Peninsular Malaysia this Merdeka celebration. Stay tuned. YB Baru Bian menjelaskan, BN menyembunyikan fakta sebenar merdekanya Malaysia. |
