ESSCom gets RM11 mln to repair, upgrade sentry post infrastructure Posted: 19 Jan 2014 09:45 AM PST LAHAD DATU: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) has been allocated RM11 million to repair and upgrade infrastructure at 62 sentry posts manned by the armed forces and the General Operations Force (PGA) in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone). In disclosing this, ESSCom director-general Datuk Mohammad Mentek said the upgrading would be implemented in stages this year. He said this was part of ESSCom's short- and long-term plans of action or strategic planning to enhance security in the Sabah east coast that had experienced an attack early last year by terrorists from the Sulu province in the southern Philippines. "This will surely boost our security forces' resolute will and determination to man our porous east coast border," Mohammad said in his speech at the launch of the Taman Palm Garden housing project, the first gated-and-guarded condominium in Lahad Datu with 24-hour security guard and latest CCTV services, near here, yesterday. — Bernama To enable your comment to be published, please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks. BIMP-EAGA Malaysia Business Council in talks on rubber plantation in Palawan Posted: 19 Jan 2014 09:06 AM PST KOTA KINABALU: The BIMP-EAGA (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines East Asean Growth Area) Malaysia Business Council is in active discussions with a government-linked company (GLC) to embark on a large-scale rubber plantation in Palawan, the Philippines. Its chairman Datuk Roselan Johar Mohamed said 12,000 hectares have been allotted for rubber plantation on the island, which can produce 3,600 metric tonnes of raw rubber per month. The rubber, he said, could then be sent to Kudat when a ramp for the berthing of a roll-on/roll-off vessel in the northern district of Sabah is ready. "The offer from the Philippine side of the venture had been generous and we hope the Malaysian side will reciprocate likewise so that a symbiotic relationship can be nurtured," he told Bernama here yesterday. Roselan said the Philippine government had established a Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) for its workers to be trained in extracting raw rubber. "TESDA will provide the training standards for workers interested in mastering the skill and securing employment in the plantations as well as to transform the crop into useful and marketable products. "The Malaysian GLC concerned will need to sponsor students in batches so that when harvesting season comes, everybody will be ready," he said. — Bernama To enable your comment to be published, please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks. Posted on January 20, 2014, Monday KOTA KINABALU: Wanita Umno Kota Kinabalu wants all its bureau chairpersons who were appointed to expand and strengthen their roles to ensure the party will be able to face challenges. Its chief, Rosimah Zakariah said with a better performance, the party will be able to maintain Barisan Nasional's winning in the next General Election. Rosimah added all bureau chairpersons who were appointed have their own roles, especially in Kota Kinabalu parliamentary, which was won by an opposition candidate who had subsequently jumped ship and is now openly supporting Barisan Nasional. "Two state seats under Kota Kinabalu parliamentary, namely Api-Api and Likas, are currently held by the opposition. We have a tough job here, so all bureaus need to work hard," she explained. Rosimah said this after the swearing-in ceremony of Kota Kinabalu Wanita Umno committee members and its bureau chairpersons, here, yesterday. A total of 14 bureau chairpersons were appointed in the movement, which will be headed by Hafsah Mohamed Lin (Management Secretariat), Saadiah Zakaria (Politic Education), Azizah Ag Samat (Special Tasks), Hajir Hassan (Liaison), Rubainah Osman (Culture and Arts), Rokiah Datu Bara (Community Complaints), Siti Ruani Junin (Membership and Voters), Aisyah Tawakkal (Religion), Norhayati Momen (Economy and Development), Normah Taulan (Sports), Rosnah Abdullah (New Media Unit), Asriayani Summase (Speech) and Durita Puntukan (Welfare). "We welcome the move by our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in cutting down the cost and allowance of our government officers and ministers to ensure we can save more money. "Leaders and government officers must show their positive attitude towards this move so that the people will see how these people are serious in teaching them to cut down their expenses and save money," she said. Rosimah also advised consumers to be smart in choosing the best price in the market. Also present at the event was Wanita Umno Vice Chief, Nuriya Muamil. LDP Youth chief echoes Teo’s views on ISA Posted: 19 Jan 2014 08:39 AM PST KOTA KINABALU: The repealed preventive laws, namely the the Internal Security Act (ISA) and the Essential (Security Cases) Regulations 1975 (ESCAR) are obsolete in the present era where human rights and the voice of the people are the ultimate decision makers. Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Youth chief Tsang Hieng Yee echoed party president Datuk Teo Chee Kang's opinion made few days ago, that it is not necessary to bring back the repealed preventive laws. Tsang said no one should be deprived of their freedom arbitrarily without first being given the right to be heard. "Malaysia is heading towards becoming a developed nation. "Human rights, freedom of speech, environmental awareness and animal protection, to name a few, are all fundamental elements of a developed nation which Malaysia has to emulate in order to achieve the said coveted status," he said in a press statement released yesterday. He said no doubt that after the repeal of the preventive laws, organized crimes have re-surfaced. However, it is not necessary to bring back the draconian ISA and ESCAR, he said. Tsang said the present laws could always be fine tuned and amended in order to deal with these organized and high-handed crimes. "In this respect, we could see that the soon-to-be passed Prevention of Crime (Amendment and Extension) Act is sought to achieve this goal. "Although this Act may not be perfect and shall be subject to constant fine-tuning, like any other acts, it seems to be a good starting effort." Under the Act, detention order of up to two years and which order is extendable has been reintroduced into our legal system but with a number of differences, compared to the ISA and ESCAR, he said. "Under the Act among others, the imposition of the detention order is no longer within the exclusive jurisdiction of the Home Ministry which was, if we can remember, not challengeable by the Courts under the ISA and ESCAR." Under the Act, any detention order shall be made by the Prevention of Crime Board which shall consist of three persons with the chair to be taken up by a person who shall be or have been, or be qualified to be a judge of the Federal Court, the Court of Appeal or a High Court. Further, any detention order directed by the Board shall also be subject to review by the High Court, thus, preventing any misuse of the Act, Tsang explained. "With all these measures to ensure the balance between human rights and freedom and prevention of crime, it is hoped that our present worries pertaining to the security of our nation posted by daring perpetration of violence and crimes by some organised groups can be resolved soon without sacrificing human value and fundamental freedom." Seize business opportunities, rural folk told Posted: 19 Jan 2014 08:39 AM PST KOTA KINABALU: People in rural areas, especially from Tenom need to seize the opportunity to expand their business in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2014 this year. Tenom Wanita Umno division chief Datuk Rahmahjan Sulaiman Khan said they need to harness the opportunity, especially with the expectation of more tourists coming to Malaysia. "This year Malaysia is targeting RM76 billion in tourist receipts through the presence of 28 million tourist arrivals, and people in Tenom should be more creative and put effort to be part of this positive development. "With the tourist arrivals target, home-stay operators or even those who are in the handicraft industry should be able to do something to increase their sales," she said. Rahmahjan said this after chairing Tenom Wanita Umno's first meeting for this year at one of hotels in the city centre, yesterday. She added that the movement will be assisting the government to spread the Visit Malaysia 2014 targets to rural areas, especially Tenom to ensure the people are ready to grab the opportunities. "Tenom is one of the best destinations in Sabah, as the State Agriculture Park and Murut Cultural House are located in the district. We also have traditional food, and wonderful nature to be explored. "I am sure with a little bit of assistance to the tourism operators in Tenom we will be able to contribute something to the Visit Malaysia programme this year," she said adding that those who are involved in the tourism industry should improve their product quality.
