Melanau traditional swing at Curtin open day - The Borneo Post Online Posted: 27 Aug 2014 12:13 PM PDT MIRI: The Melanau traditional giant swing or 'Tibau' will be among the many attractions in the coming Curtin Sarawak Open Day 2014 at the campus of Curtin University on Sept 20. Featured for the second year, tibau features a death-defying 30-foot high swing for youths who dive from a high bamboo scaffolding to catch a rope as it reaches the height of its arc. Up to eight persons would hang on the clump from the giant swing as it soars above the ground. It takes courage and good timing to swing from a tibau which will be one of the major attractions during Pesta Kaul, the Melanau community festival celebrated in Mukah around the end of April each year. Its showcasing at Curtin Sarawak is a collaborative effort between Curtin Sarawak's Student Council and Miri Melanau Association with sponsorship from the chair of Curtin Sarawak Campus Council and former deputy chief minister, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam. Construction of the structure by the association's members was completed in time for last year's open day when it became one a popular attraction. Following some maintenance and upgrading recently, it is ready for another round of 'thrills and spills', as described by Student Council President Mo Kamit. "The tibau is located near our Recreation and Event Centre and visitors to the event are welcome to give it a try under the guidance of Miri Melanau Association members," Mo said, adding that Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan and president of the Miri Melanau Association are According to the organising chair of Curtin Sarawak Open Day, Nicholas Leong, this was a way to promote local culture and offer visitors some fun at the event that used to highlight the university's academic programmes, facilities and services, community and environmental causes. His committee and the student council are keen to have other community associations involved in the annual event in the future.
