Argentina dish out friendly revenge on Germany Posted: 03 Sep 2014 07:17 PM PDT Argentina spoiled the party for world champions Germany by hammering the hosts 4-2 in an international friendly in Duesseldorf on Wednesday in a repeat of the World Cup final. Manchester United?s record British signing Angel Di Maria scored once and made goals for Sergio Aguero, Erik Lamela and Federico Fernandez as Argentina won their first game since losing to Germany in Brazil. Andre Schuerrle and Mario Goetze replied but Germany were brought crashing down to earth by a ruthless Argentina display in what was Gerardo Martino?s first match in charge of the South Americans. Goetze?s extra-time winner at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana on July 13 sealed Germany?s fourth World Cup triumph and there was a jubilant, capacity crowd of 51,132 packed into the Esprit Arena on Wednesday evening. Before kick-off the home fans got a chance to say a final farewell to Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker, record goal scorer Miroslav Klose and World Cup-winning captain Philipp Lahm. All three retired from international football after Germany?s success in Brazil. Only four players who started the World Cup final were in the German line-up, with Manuel Neuer captaining the side in the absence of his injured Bayern Munich teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger. Argentina?s team showed just four changes from the last time the sides met, with Javier Mascherano wearing the captain?s armband in place of absent Barcelona star Lionel Messi. Di Maria, who missed the World Cup final through injury, set the tone of things to come with a piercing run early on before Mario Gomez missed the first of a string of scoring chances that came his way. Argentina keeper Sergio Romero stood tall when the Fiorentina striker was sent clean through and turned his shot over. There was real quality on show when Argentina got the opening goal after 20 minutes. Getting possession near the corner of the penalty area, di Maria played in a sumptuous cross with the outside of his left foot that left the unmarked Aguero with an easy close-range finish. Toni Kroos fizzed a shot just wide for Germany before Gomez was again denied by Romero. This time the keeper saved with an outstretched foot after Marco Reus set the German forward up inside the box. Argentina always looked dangerous on the counter against an inexperienced German defence and di Maria, in particular, was thriving on the right against Borussia Dortmund?s Erik Durm. Five minutes before half-time the former Real Madrid player again found himself in space and he had plenty of time to pick out Lamela. Standing to the left the of the penalty spot, the Tottenham winger caressed a volley past Neuer and into the top corner. Gomez scuffed wide on the rebound before half-time to howls of derision from the crowd and two minutes after the restart, Argentina went further in front. Di Maria?s excellent free-kick from the left was met by the head of Swansea defender Fernandez at the back post. And just two minutes later di Maria raced on to Mascherano?s through ball before cooly dinking the ball over half-time substitute Roman Weidenfeller for Argentina?s fourth goal. Schuerrle poked home from a corner after 52 minutes in a madcap start to the second half. Goetze, a second half sub, reduced the deficit further with a deflected shot on 76 minutes shortly after Reus had struck the post. -AFP/ france24 |

"We are still waiting for other divisions to submit their entries and as the host, Kuching may consider fielding two teams each in all categories," said organising chairman Wilson Tan during a press conference at a local restaurant yesterday. SBBA chief salutes Buda and Melvern Posted: 03 Sep 2014 09:21 AM PDT by Matthew Umpang, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on September 4, 2014, Thursday KUCHING: Sarawak Body-building Association (SBBA) president Dato Wee Hong Seng is proud that two Sarawakians represented the country at the 48th Asian Bodybuilding Fitness and Physique Sports Championship held in Macau last week. "Just qualifying for the contest is a great achievement by itself, let alone winning something in it. It is not easy (to qualify) and I believe that both body-builders had worked hard for it," he said in praise of Buda Anchah and Melvern Abdullah. Buda won the masters (41-50 years) category while Melvern was eliminated in the pre-judging round of the 65kg category. Commenting on Sarawak-based Melvern, Wee said there will always be a next time for the Sarawak-based contestant to shine. This was due to the fact that he sees a bright future for the 39 year-old lecturer. "What is important is that Melvern gets the exposure as I am optimistic that he will one day achieve all his personal targets and do the state proud. He has got what it takes." As for Melvern, it was his inaugural participation at an international contest and he was grateful for the opportunity to represent the country. "I hope to be given the chance to represent the country again. It was an honour for me," he said. Both Melvern and Buda are now looking forward to the Mr World contest to be held in Mumbai, India in December. |
National bodybuilder who never represented Sarawak Posted: 03 Sep 2014 09:20 AM PDT KUCHING: National body-builder Buda Anchah might have won titles for the country but he has never represented his home state Sarawak. A Royal Malaysia Air Force (RMAF) personnel, he has been active in both the national and international body-buiding scene since 1996. "I first take up this (body-building) as means to occupy his free time and hobby at first. After I realised that I can go far in this, I then decided to push myself to go as far as I can," he told The Borneo Post. His latest achievement was winning the masters category of the Mr Asia championship in Macau last week. But why has Buda never represented Sarawak? According to Buda, he owes his services to the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) as it was the ATM who played a big role in his body-building career. It is possible for him to represent the state, he said, as long as there is an authorised letter from the Sarawak Body-Buidling Association (SBBA) to the ATM. "They (ATM) have done so much for me. I can never forget their contribution even though my heart is always with Sarawak," he added. Asked about the matter, SBBA president Dato Wee Hong Seng felt that it does not matter if Buda represent the state or not. For him, as long as the person is a Sarawakian, that is fine with him. "Should Buda decide to represent Sarawak in the future, he will always be welcome. We shall welcome him with open arm as there is always a place for him here." Wee believes Buda can also serve as a mentor to other young local body-builders. For the record, Buda will retire from the RMAF next year and he plans to return to Sarawak for good. |

Perak have good backup players, says Alberts Posted: 03 Sep 2014 09:18 AM PDT KUCHING: Sarawak's coach Robert Alberts has full praise for the Perak team in the Malaysia Cup tournament. He said this was because Perak had a good football development programme which enabled them to absorb several of their President's Cup players into the senior team this season. "Perak develop their young players and they have their own academy for the programme. "They won the President's Cup in the last three years and compared to us, we were last and second last in the past two years in the tournament," he noted. "Their level in football is higher than ours," added the Dutchman. Sarawak's only President's Cup player called up to join the senior team for the Malaysia Cup competition is Shreen Tambi, 21, a former Harimau B player. "He (Shreen) has good attitude and is one of the players we looking at, as he's got the potential," Alberts said. On Akhmal Rizal, the coach said there was never any plan to field him in the first eleven, adding that he was brought into the team to play the supersub role. "Due to the absence of the other strikers who were either injured or suspended, the Kedah-born player was fielded in the first eleven when Sarawak drew 1-1 with Perak at the State Stadium last Saturday night," he explained. — Bernama |
