‘Lahad Datu marine police base meets demand for modern policing’

Posted: 02 Sep 2014 09:53 AM PDT

LAHAD DATU: The Lahad Datu Region 4 Marine Police Operations Base fulfills the demand for modern policing that has become all the more complex and challenging, said Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Mohd Zinin.

He said that in this context, the planning and strategic development in terms of training, infrastructure, assets or logistical support should be in tandem with the times.

"The construction of a new base and acquisition of more sophisticated patrol boats should be undertaken from time to time.

"This is to strengthen planning and the effectiveness of the marine police operations at sea to defend national sovereignty," he said when opening the Lahad Datu Region 4 Marine Police Operations Base here yesterday.

The base was built at a cost of RM90 million and began to be used from April 2011. — Bernama

‘Police have identified individuals allegedly behind secession call’

Posted: 02 Sep 2014 09:47 AM PDT

LAHAD DATU: Police have identified the individuals allegedly responsible for calling for the secession of Sabah from Malaysia, according to Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Mohd Zinin.

He said they would be investigated for allegedly making seditious statements.

"Stern action will be taken against them for inciting the people in Sabah to hate Malaysia," he told a press conference after opening the Lahad Datu District Police headquarters complex here yesterday.

On Saturday, at a programme in Sipitang, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin warned against attempts to undermine the people's cooperation, security and unity by calling for the secession.

He stressed that police would not take the matter lightly as the statements were found to have been deliberately made to cause chaos in the country.

On another matter, Mohd Bakri said the curfew imposed in the waters off Sabah's east coast would only be called off if the level of security returns to normal.

He said every action taken by the authorities was based on security requirements and the people should note that the curfew had been effective in curbing activities that could threaten Sabah's security. — Bernama

Sabahans given priority for state civil service jobs — PSC

Posted: 02 Sep 2014 09:45 AM PDT

KOTA KINABALU: Sabahan applicants will be given priority for jobs in the civil service that are located in Sabah.

According to the Public Service Commission (PSC) secretary Datuk Ramli Juhari in his speech and later, during an interview with media members at a ceremony where he presented appointment letters to 79 successful job applicants for civil service jobs near here yesterday, Sabahans will be given the first priority to fill up vacant positions within the state.

"But of course, they have to be qualified to fill up the vacant posts," he said.

"One of the requirements is they must have credits in Mathematics and in Bahasa Malaysia," he said.

He also said the selection of the successful candidates would be computer generated and not done manually.

Meanwhile, PSC received a total of 1.3 million job applications up until August.

And out of the total applicants, only 30,000 were successful in their application, said Ramli.

Last year, out of the 2.2 million applicants who applied for jobs at the civil service, only 60,000 were given jobs, he said.

In Sabah, a total of 10,000 nurses will be sitting for their examination prior to undergoing interviews in the near future, he said.

"The successful candidates will have to have strong credits in Science subjects," he said.

"It is very competitive," he said on the number of people who wanted to apply to become civil servants.

"It is also not easy to become successful … hence for those who are presented with their appointment letters today, be grateful because only a handful have managed to get to where you are and make sure you give your very best to the government," he said.

He also advised the applicants to read through their appointment letters carefully to ensure they fulfil the needs to become confirmed staff.

"You would have to sit for examinations to become confirmed staff. Some have been terminated because they did not know they needed to fulfil these requirements," he said.

At the same time, he also mentioned that absenteeism was an issue among civil servants, though not a serious one and urged the new members to be disciplined in carrying out their responsibilities.

Malaysia, US wrap up eight days of joint military exercise in Tanduo

Posted: 02 Sep 2014 09:43 AM PDT

LAHAD DATU: Malaysia and the United States (US) wrapped up eight days of joint military amphibious exercise (Malus Amphex 2014) in Kampung Tanduo, about 150km from here yesterday, renewing their commitment to ensure long-term peace, stability and security in Malaysia, particularly eastern Sabah.

About 500 personnel from the Malaysian Armed Forces, as well as 285 US Marines and sailors from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit took part in the joint military excercise in Tanduo and its surrounding areas.

Tanduo was the landing site of the terrorist intruders from Sulu early last year.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the amphibious exercise, Malaysia's Chief of Army Jen Datuk Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor said Malus Amphex 2014, the first Malaysia-US joint exercise held in Sabah, was among others, designed to foster and strengthen the existing relationship between the people of the two nations.

"US military presence in these waters (off eastern Sabah) coincides well with our policy of engaging with a strong and friendly policing force here.

"With the recent spates of cross-border incidents that have plaqued the waters, joint Malaysia-United States military cooperation bodes well with our commitment to eradicate the menace that has been plaquing this part of our country for many decades," he said.

Raja Mohamed Affandi represented Chief of Defence Forces Gen Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin at the function.

Also present were US Marine Corps Forces Pacific Commander Lt Gen John Toolan Jr and Joint Force Commander, Malaysian Armed Forces Lt Gen Datuk Seri Affendi Buang.

Raja Mohamed Affandi said the excercise focused on amphibious landing, engineering civil action programme and medical civic action programme.

He said the conduct of the exercise had greatly benefited the Malaysian Armed Forces in dealing with cross-border threats.

"US presence here helps contribute to the well-being and security of this part of Malaysia. Though this is not a big scale exercise, it is a good platform for us to work on it and gradually increasing the scale of such exercise in the future.

"We look forward to engaging in similar ventures in the future, perhaps enhancing the level of such exercise so that it can have a positive impact on the defence of the state of Sabah," he said.

Later, Raja Mohamed Affandi told reporters that Malaysia was now in a better position to face any eventuality, including cross-border threats or intrusion following the successful completion of Malus Amphex 2014.

"Our forces have gained a lot from this exercise with the United States, especially in terms of knowledge and experience," he said, harbouring hope that Malaysia and the US would continue conducting such exercise in the future for a common good.

Meanwhile, Toolan said the US was committed to helping Malaysia combat cross-border threats.

"We are aware of the security threats in this part of Malaysia (eastern Sabah), and our presence is a strong signal that we are here to help out Malaysia," he said, adding that Malaysian army personnel had shown tremendous capabilities during the joint excercise.

Toolan said the joint exercise would surely further strengthen military ties and cooperation between the two nations. — Bernama
