KAPIT: Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) has been commended for living up to its vision and mission as the energy provider for the state.

In giving words of praise to the company at its New Year Dinner cum Family Day at a hotel here on Saturday, political secretary to the chief minister Wilson Nyabong who represented Minister of Land Development Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing, was glad to note that the company was aggressively embarking on green energy to power up the state and its industries.

"Previously known as Sesco, you're given the heavy task and responsibility to overcome the challenge in meeting the state's demand for energy," he said at the gathering that was attended by all staff from Kapit, Song and Belaga.

He explained that for the past 50 years, the state had been depending on fossil fuel to generate power and that one day oil supply would be exhausted, making it necessary to look for alternative sources such as coal and hydro power.

He thus praised SEB for going for hydro dams to generate electricity, saying by doing so the company was also contributing to rural development in terms of roads and other infrastructure.

He also said the state was now undergoing the second wave of development through SCORE (Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy), in which there would be many heavy industries that require cheap and reliable electricity supply.

"As power provider, you've a lot of challenges. Nevertheless, I know you've the solution for meeting consumers' demand. Previously, Kapit faced frequent interruption of electricity supply. After the town was connected to the state grid a year ago, now we've stable electricity supply," he added.

Commenting on the New Year Dinner cum Family Day, Nyabong commended the organising committee for doing a good job in bringing all the company's staff and family members together to foster closer cooperation and friendship.

Later, he announced a grant of RM5,000 from Hulu Rajang MP Wilson Ugak to the organising committee.

Among those present were district engineer Marina Sylvester, SEB public relations officer for Baleh River Cr Jantai Maseng and organising chairman Qhairul Abdullah.

KUCHING: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu is keen on collaborations between Malaysia and China to further develop the state's agriculture sector.

Jabu, who is also Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture, believed the state had great agricultural potential, and its development would benefit the rural populace.

"We can look into ways to further develop the agriculture sector so as to develop the rural areas where people can lead a more prosperous life," he said at a Lunar New Year reception hosted by China's consul general in Kuching, Liu Quan, at the Crown Square here on Friday.

Jabu represented Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud at the gathering.

On Visit Malaysia Year 2014, Jabu urged all tourism industry players in the country to work as a team in order to woo more tourists from populous China.

"If we work hard, we will be rewarded. Let us all work together for a more prosperous and fruitful year for the general well-being of the people of Malaysia and China."

Noting that the Chinese consulate here marked its 20th anniversary this year, he assured China's diplomatic arm here that the state government would support its activities here, especially those pertaining to culture and education.

"On behalf of the Sarawak government, I affirm we will have stronger ties with China, and given the 40 years of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China, it is important we maintain such relationship for more successes."

SRB to open sub office in Daro - The Borneo Post Online

Posted: 20 Jan 2014 11:44 AM PST

by Samuel Aubrey, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on January 21, 2014, Tuesday

KUCHING: Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) will open a sub office in Daro to beef up its enforcement there, said its new chairman Dr Murni Suhaili.

"We plan to open a sub office there, probably next month. We are now in the process of appointing staff members, including enforcement personnel, to be stationed there," he said when contacted yesterday.

He stressed this was necessary to ensure boat operators comply with all river safety rules and regulations, especially in light of the tragic boat capsize at the estuary of Batang Lassa near Pulau Bruit on Saturday.

Without enforcement, things like passengers not wearing safety jackets and overloaded boats might happen, and this could lead to undesirable incidents, he cautioned.

"In places like Daro, river transportation remains important because it is the main mode for them to move around from one village to another village. With the greater presence of SRB's personnel, it is hoped that this will improve the safety of river transport there."

He said this when asked to comment on several statements by individuals and politicians concerning last Saturday's boat capsize that saw 16 passengers saved, nine drowned and two still missing as at press time yesterday.

Bukit Kota assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail recently said SRB should be on the ground more often to ensure the safety of boat passengers.

Dr Murni, who took over as SRB chairman from Datuk Roland Sagah Wee this year, conceded that SRB did not have sufficient personnel, and he hope to address this problem.

"We will do our best to ensure the people of Sarawak get to enjoy better river transportation services."
