KUCHING: CMS Cement Sdn Bhd (CMS Cement) has announced plans to intensify its investments in Sarawak.

During a media briefing yesterday, parent company Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd (CMS) group managing director Dato Richard Curtis explained that the company is currently rolling out various investment plans slated for full completion in 2016.

"These investment plans will increase the company's production capacity and enhance its operational efficiencies and production quality," Curtis said.

According to him, the company will be investing RM60 million to beef up its Pan-Sarawak distribution capabilities. This development phase will see the construction of a third bulk cement barge to enhance distribution activity.

He said the company is currently operating two terminal bulks in Kuching and Bintulu. With the additional infrastructure, bulk cement delivery times is also expected to be shortened.

"We will also build a large scale cement silo at our Kuching plant to increase storage capacity by 4,000 tonnes and we have plans to construct an additional inline packer in Bintulu to improve capacity to produce bag cement," he said.

Curtis said another RM200 million will be invested to construct a one-million metric tonne cement grinding facility, which will boost surface capacity in addition to the company's two existing plants which will continue to meet the state's needs.

"This plant will service inter-land Kuching, and part of Kuching, leaving the current Kuching plants to focus on the export of cement to other parts of Sarawak such as Sibu, Miri, Bintulu, Samalaju and the hinterland areas surrounding the hydro dams," he said.

Curtis also said that the new plant is expected to perk up the production capacity to about 2.6 million tonnes per year.

"We have the window of growth to take into account the state's increasing demand. We expect that in 2018, demand will continue to grow by four to five per cent per year, assuming that the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (Score) continues on the same upward trajectory," he added.

CMS Cement, CMS Clinker Sdn Bhd and CMS Concrete Products Sdn Bhd executive director and chief executive officer Goh Chii Bing told reporters that the new plant is in its final tendering stage and is set for completion in 2016.

"We should be able to start awarding out tender jobs by the first half of this year," he said.

The company is also looking at plans to refurbish and upgrade its main jetty in Kuching to improve its ability to handle the export of bulk cement and the import of raw materials.

Meanwhile, on the import of clinker, Curtis said the company will continue importing clinker instead of establishing a new clinker plant as there is no large scale demand for it yet.

KUCHING: Union of Sarawak School Bus Association is seeking a 40 per cent increase in fare.

Its president Sawoi Anee, said an application was made to Commercial Vehicles Licencing Board on Friday.

"We have officially made an application (for the fare increase), and I personally handed the letter myself yesterday (Friday) to the board's  office," Sawoi said when contacted yesterday.

She hoped that the board will give their reply soon, saying that the members were eagerly waiting.

Sawoi explained that the association had no other option, but to increase the fare in view of the escalating cost of spare parts, tyres and petrol, among others, which have greatly affected school bus operators.

Meanwhile, Sawoi last year said that the association had sought a 30 per cent fare hike, adding that the request was made during a meeting in Dungun, Terengganu on Nov 23 with Malaysian School Bus Association.

The association has more than 500 members across the state with more than 100 operating here.

"We were introduced to the Prison Department by a fellow staff of Puncak Borneo Prison and we were overwhelmed that they were keen to help us realise our dreams of having the largest state flag," said Awang.

Awang further elaborated that the flag symbolises the spirit of GB13 who had always been with the state football team.

Meanwhile, State Prison Director Abdul Kadir Rais said the State Prison Department were proud to be one of the agencies to assist in making the dream came true.

"We all knew that the state football team has the most fanatical supporters in Malaysia and we are very supportive and willing to help in any possible ways," said Rais.

More than 25 inmates were involved in the production of the giant flag which was constructed from Dec 4 last year and completed on Jan 15.

The flag will be displayed during the Sarawak FA home matches at Stadium Negeri Petra Jaya.

Sarawak's 2014 Super League campaign kicks off tonight against ATM at Selayang

KUCHING: After months of anticipation, all will be unveiled as Sarawak take on ATM at the Selayang Stadium tonight for their Super League curtain-raiser. Like all teams in the Super League, both sides are eager to show their fans what their reinforcements and new signings can do to help their cause among the nation's elite. Sarawak head coach Robert Alberts has not set a specific target for the 2014 season – though there have been media talk of somewhere between top f light survival and a top six finish – among the 12 teams in the Super League. For tonight's match, Alberts might field the same side that thrashed Premier League side SPA Putrajaya FC 5-0 last week in a friendly match. New players like Gabor Gyepes, Milorad Janjus and Mohd Lot Abu Hassan are expected to make their debuts. ATM a r e c er t ainly qui t e formidable. An interesting fact is that both teams have been recent Premier League champions – ATM in 2012 and Sarawak in 2013. Upon promotion to the top tier, Armed Forces did well enough to fi nish sixth last season. They are strengthened with 10 new signings this season. A conf ident head coach B. Sathianathan, an ex-national coach, has been quoted as saying that he would consider himself and his team a failure if they fail to win at least one trophy this year. Juan Arostegui, who was a former Malaysia Cup winner with the now defunct MPPJ Selangor seven years ago, is scheduled to make an emotional return to the Malaysian football arena as the Argentinian striker dons the ATM colours. Both teams look evenly-matched but Sarawak will need to work hard on their away form to win this clash which kicks of f at 8.45pm. After their team's unbeaten and victorious Premier League c amp a i g n f o l l owe d by a n impressive run in the Malaysia Cup last year, Sarawak fans are anxious to see how well the Crocs will be when pitted against the big boys of the Super League. Milorad Janjus Let the battle begin!
