KUALA LUMPUR: The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry aims to turn 100 retail shops in Sabah and Sarawak into Kedai COOP Mart or Kedai COOP 1Malaysia (COOP 1M) this year.

Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek said this is to ensure that COOP 1M products reach the two states in an effort to help the people cope with the rising price of daily goods.

"Just like Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M) products, COOP 1M products are not branded and are sold at the same price nationwide under the 'Satu Malaysia, Satu Harga' programme.

"The existence of these shops is the best solution to address rising prices as the prices of products are fixed at all times," he told reporters after launching Kad Debit-I Koperasi Perkhidmatan Pelajaran Nasional Berhad (Kopenas), here yesterday.

COOP 1M products are mostly produced by cooperatives and small and medium industries and are priced 20 to 30 per cent lower than other branded products but with similar quality.

COOP 1M products can be obtained in 371 Kedai COOP Mart nationwide, of which 69 are in Sabah and 45 are in Sarawak.

"With the expansion of COOP 1M products in the market, the people have more options to get goods at lower and affordable prices." — Bernama

DAP Sarawak chided over 'Allah' issue - The Borneo Post Online

by Yunus Yussop, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on January 9, 2014, Thursday

BINTULU: The DAP should stop all political propaganda to mislead the public on the controversial 'Allah' issue in Selangor, said SUPP Bintulu branch chairman Henry Ling Kuong Meng.

He blasted DAP Sarawak for capitalising on the incident for "selfish political gains".

They had disregarded the fact that the infringement of human rights and right to freedom of speech and expression under Article 9 and freedom of religion under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution had shamefully happened in Pakatan Rakyat-controlled Selangor, he pointed out.

Last Jan 2, the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) raided the Bible Society of Malaysia's (BSM) office at Petaling Jaya and seized 310 copies of Bibles in Bahasa Malaysia or Al-Kitab, 20 copies in the Iban language bibles known as Bup Kudus, and 20 copies of Luke's Gospel in Bahasa Malaysia that contains the word 'Allah'.

Ling said he supported Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing's call to the DAP not to mislead the public on this incident.

He called on DAP Sarawak leaders to make a public apology for making untruthful and selfish statements condemning the Barisan Nasional (BN) government over the seizure of the Bibles.

"SUPP Bintulu branch also requests DAP Sarawak leaders to openly condemn the Selangor state government within the next 48 hours if they accept the constitutional principle that there should be freedom of speech and expression as well as freedom of religion of fellow Malaysians in that Selangor cannot stop Christians from using 'Allah'."

Ling said Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud had reiterated many times that Christians could use the name 'Allah' in the state.

"The chief minister had made a public statement on the issue of 'Allah' and declared that the ruling was not binding on Sabah and Sarawak," said Ling.

Flood victims in Sarawak may get cash aid, says Fatimah ...

Posted: 08 Jan 2014 11:39 AM PST

KUCHING: Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah will lobby for cash aid for flood victims during the State Disaster Management Committee's post-mortem meeting.

"After visiting the affected areas myself and seeing with my own eyes the aftermath of the floods … the belongings, such as furniture and other things, damaged by floods, I found it as most appropriate to give the victims some cash aid.

"I will bring up this matter (at the meeting) and we will discuss this at the state level first before putting forward our request to the federal government," she told reporters after presenting gifts to 1Azam participants who had completed sewing and bakery courses organised by The Society for Kuching Urban Poor (SKUP) here yesterday.

However, Fatimah, who sits in the committee, stressed she can't make any promises about the proposed aid. Furthermore, the date for the post-mortem meeting has yet to be decided.

"We can't promise, but if victims in Peninsular Malaysia can get such assistance we hope the affected people here will not be forgotten," she said.

Fatimah noted that several victims suffered substantial losses during the floods, especially those whose houses were submerged by water.

The state government, through the Welfare Department, had been providing essential items and food to flood victims at evacuation centres and in areas where communications were cut off.

On flood updates, she said as at 8am yesterday, three evacuation centres —Tatau Sports Complex, SK Kpg Iran in Niah sub-district, and Bakong community hall, Marudi – were still opened.

"As of this morning (Wednesday), six schools are still closed, but we hope the situation will improve soon."
