The victim's partly decomposed body was found yesterday inside the drain around 11am. VAT69 commandos rushed into sector C upon hearing colleague’s yell Posted: 16 Jan 2014 09:48 AM PST KOTA KINABALU: A VAT69 commando group carrying out close reconnaisance at sector D in Kampung Tanduo, Lahad Datu last March 1 rushed into the sector C area upon hearing a yell for assistance from their colleague in the other group. Corporal Azman Ampong, 38, who was assigned to sector C, which was one of five sectors tasked with the surveillance operation, told the High Court yesterday that the sector D group responded to his call for assistance as he and his colleague Corporal Mohd Tarmizi Hashim fired back while under attack by armed intruders. He was testifying as the fourth witness in the trial which convened at the Sabah Prisons Department here, of 30 individuals charged with carrying out terrorism-related activities in Sabah last year. "When you said you saw the D group coming to your sector did you see DSP Abdul Rani Alias (D group chief)?" asked Attorney General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail. Azman: "Yes. He was leading his team. I saw one of DSP Abdul Rani's men, Lance Corporal Qaiyum, fall. I then saw one of their members pick up Qaiyum's weapon and started firing at the intruders. The others also started firing." Azman said the combined tenacity of the two groups matched the strength of the intruders' assault. He said in the 10am incident, some of the assailants fell as well, and were dragged away by the other members. The witness also told the court that when Mohd Tarmizi was shot on the left arm after earlier being hit in the left thigh, he advised his colleague to pull back. "I gave him covering fire while he retreated. Then I continued the barrage at the assailants," he said. In the course of the clash, the commandos also heard two explosions believed to be from a grenade launcher. "When the explosions occurred I guess DSP Anwar feared for my safety and ordered me to fall back," he said. Twenty-two of the 30 accused including two Malaysians are being jointly tried on a charge of waging war against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and being members of a terrorist group. One of them faces two additional charges of recruiting members for a terrorist group and harbouring individuals believed to be members of a terrorist group. Five of eight accused are charged with being members of a terrorist group, while another, a Malaysian woman is accused of harbouring individuals believed to be members of a terrorist group. Two others are charged with attempting to harbour individuals believed to be members of a terrorist group. The offences were allegedly committed between Feb 12 and April 10 last year. The trial heard before Justice Stephen Chung continues on Jan 27. — Bernama To enable your comment to be published, please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks. 11 schools reopen, another five closed Posted: 16 Jan 2014 09:38 AM PST KOTA KINABALU: All 11 schools that were closed due to floods on Wednesday have been reopened but another five were closed yesterday following fresh flooding in four districts. State Education Director Datuk Jame Alip, when contacted last night, said the affected schools were SK Litang in Kinabatangan, SRJK (C) Sin Boon in Sipitang and SK Bawang in Tamparuli. The other two were SK Pituru and SK Kesapang in Kota Belud, he said. "The total number of students involved is 518, together with 79 teachers," said Jame. "Apart from the five schools, the rest are operating as normal," he said. Earlier yesterday, Jame visited Sekolah Kebangsaan in Tamparuli after a block of classrooms collapsed following a mudslide yesterday. The director said cabins would be used as temporary classrooms at the school. He said they would be set up in an open area to enable the pupils to attend class. Only one of the two blocks of classrooms at the school could be used following the mudslide, he told reporters after taking a look at the collapsed block. "The state Education Department has applied to the Education Ministry for a financial allocation to build the cabins," he said. Jame said the mudslide occurred about 10am but the pupils attending classes at the block managed to run out after being alerted by the school guard. However, he said the school, which has 124 pupils and 19 teachers, had to be closed temporarily to ensure stability of the area. "As a long-term measure, the school has to be relocated as the soft ground poses a danger to the pupils," he said. Meanwhile, all the 80 flood evacuees from seven villages in the Sipitang district returned to their homes yesterday after the floodwaters receded. Sipitang district officer Latip Amat said the villagers were evacuated to the Sipitang multi-purpose hall on Wednesday after Sungai Mengalong burst its banks and flooded their villages. He said the flood operations room and the rescue agencies were continuing to monitor the situation in the district. Enquiries can be directed to 087-821963. Lodge police report if you’re victim of shooting spree – police Posted: 16 Jan 2014 09:38 AM PST by Elton Gomes. Posted on January 17, 2014, Friday KOTA KINABALU: City police chief ACP Jauteh Dikun has called on anyone who may have fallen victim to the shooting spree last week in the state capital and Penampang to lodge a police report. A group of youth shot at more than 40 premises by using air guns loaded with marbles and ball bearing as bullets. Jauteh Dikun, when contacted yesterday, urged anyone believed to have been a victim of the incident to come forward to lodge a police report so that investigation could be carried out immediately. "Police have received several reports after the incident and we urged those who believe they may have also fallen victim to come forward," said Jauteh when asked to comment on a report at Star online that a bank officer believed that his four-wheel-drive vehicle was also the target of the group of people who went on the shooting spree on Jan 10. The bank officer claimed that the rear glass window of his four-wheel-drive vehicle shattered after it was believed hit by marble along Jalan Sepanggar on December 29 last year. The bank officer initially thought that it was caused by a pebble or a stone that was thrown at the vehicle, but later found a marble inside his four-wheel-drive. He did not think much about the incident until he read of the Jan 10 shooting, and believed it could be the same group that shot at his vehicle. It was also reported that the bank officer did not lodge any police report as he had since repaired the rear glass window. Jauteh, therefore, urged anyone with information to come forward as police were still investigating the case and all information and police reports were vital for police investigation. No arrest had been made since the incident and police were still establishing the motive of the shooting and the identities of the suspects, he said. Jauteh said the police believed that the group of irresponsible individuals, believed to be teenagers, had caused unnecessary panic when they went around the state capital shooting at 46 premises with what they believed were air guns loaded with marbles late last Friday and early Saturday morning. The group was said to have moved around the state capital and in three vehicles shooting at premises along their way with air guns loaded with marbles, in the city centre, Inanam, Luyang and Penampang between 11.45pm on January 10 until 6am on January 11. Among the premises affected were banks, hotels, beauty saloons, restaurants, offices, a petrol station, car showrooms and shopping malls with losses estimated at around hundreds and thousands of ringgit. However, no casualty was reported in the incident, which reportedly brought about some degree of panic and apprehension in the social media, Facebook and WhatsApp. To enable your comment to be published, please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks.
