Posted: 16 Jan 2014 11:10 AM PST

France legend Zinedine Zidane, currently working as an assistant to coach Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, on Thursday graduated with a diploma in sports management at the Centre for the Law and Economics of Sport in Limoges.

Zidane did not announce the news himself but Olivier Dacourt – a fellow former French international midfielder and a classmate – posted a picture on Twitter with the ex-Ballon d'Or, both holding their diplomas.

"Finally GRADUATES…" said Dacourt, whose career included spells in England and Italy.

When asked about the prospect of Zidane becoming a coach in the future, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez told French television on Monday: "Zinedine is part of the history of Real and I think we would be proud if he could become coach one day.

"Zidane works in a very intelligent way with the staff. He understands everything."

Last weekend, current Marseille coach Jose Anigo also suggested that Zidane could eventually take over as coach of his hometown club.

Getting athletes to training centres is state's biggest challenge in preparing for Sukma XVII

KUCHING: Sarawak's biggest challenge in preparing for Sukma XVII in Kangar, Perlis from May 24 to June 4 is centralised training for the athletes.

Assistant Sports Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin said all this while, Sarawak had been facing logistics problem as it is the biggest state in the country and getting athletes to training centres in Kuching, Miri and Sibu was always a big headache.

"We have to get the athletes who are mostly students to undergo centralised training at specific centres. In some cases, such as wushu, the students need to be stationed in Kuching for long-term training programmes," he told reporters after chairing a Sukma XVII briefing/meeting at Regency Hotel yesterday.

Lee, also the Assistant Communications minister, said it was fortunate that the parents and athletes concerned were very cooperative and supportive of the Sarawak State Sports Council and the respective associations in running the training programmes.

"I understand that there have been some problems on the training programmes and we are trying to overcome them and that's why we are holding a briefing/meeting today," he added.

Also present during the press conference were Permanent Secretary to Ministry of Social Development Affandi Keli, acting MSNS director Lucas Kallang Laeng, MSNS assistant director Abdul Muktalib Mohamad and Sarawak Sports Corporation chief executive officer Dr Ong Kong Swee.

Lee said Sarawak will be taking part in 22 out of 24 events competed at the 17th edition of Sukma in Perlis.

"We are not competing in optimist sailing and gymrama because we do not have the athletes/teams for these sports. However, we do hope to have the teams for them in Sukma 2016 where Sarawak will be the host," he said.

"We are hoping to do better than our fourth place finish two years ago in Pahang.

"We will be focusing on wushu, swimming, taekwondo and tennis to deliver and we are also hoping for sports like ten-pin bowling and cycling to do well."

Lee said the greatest challenge for the state Sukma athletes at Perlis Sukma will come from national teams.

"We are at a disadvantage because our athletes, some of whom are first-timers, lack exposure and experience when compared to the national athletes who have competed in many international competitions overseas," he said.

The 22 events that Sarawak will be gunning for medals are aquatics (swimming and diving), archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, canoeing, cycling, football, golf, hockey (men's and women's), karate, lawn bowls, petanque, sepak takraw, shooting, silat, squash, taekwondo, tennis, tenpin bowling, weightlifting and wushu.

Posted: 16 Jan 2014 09:10 AM PST

Its president Mohd Salleh Sani said to do this, the association had sent a team of 12 potential exponents including four female members to Bangkok, Thailand for an intensive centralised training stint.

NSC to adopt ‘strategic intervention’ on underperforming associations

Posted: 16 Jan 2014 09:09 AM PST

PUTRAJAYA: Following the poor performance in certain sports at the Myanmar SEA Games last December, the National Sports Council (NSC) will be adopting a 'strategic intervention' approach to "realign" the national sports associations (NSAs) concerned.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said among the sports that underperformed and needed urgent attention were swimming, athletics, road cycling, gymnastics, sepak takraw and badminton.

He said Malaysia used to be a regional powerhouse in these sports but now they could no longer be hoped for medals.

"As such, there is need a for strategic intervention, cooperation between the NSC, National Sports Institute and the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) to look into this malaise.

"The NSC and OCM need to engage the NSAs concerned to repair the damage," he told reporters after chairing a post-mortem meeting on the national contingent's performance at the Myanmar SEA Games yesterday.

Khairy said the meeting among others discussed in detail the steps that could be taken by the NSAs concerned apart from strengthening them at the affiliate (state) level.

Meanwhile, Khairy said he had instructed auditors from his ministry to audit how its annual allocation of RM1.5 million to the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) for their road cycling development was spent.

He said this was being done because there were complaints that the fiscal reports on the matter were "too general".

The audit comes in the wake of the dismal performance of the national road cycling team in Myanmar Games. — Bernama

Muhd Ziyad clinches first gold in athletics

Posted: 16 Jan 2014 09:08 AM PST

NAYPYITAW: National paralympian, Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli collected the first gold medal in athletics for Malaysia on the second day of the 7th Asean Para Games here yesterday.

Muhammad Ziyad clinched the gold in the men's discus F20 event with a distance of 38.37 metres while compatriot Abdul Shukur Subari took the silver medal with a throw of 29.93 meters.

"I am satisfied with my performance which exceeded my personal best of 33 metres," he told Bernama.

Meanwhile track athlete, Krishna Kumar Hari Das contributed Malaysia's second athletics gold medal in the men's 400m T38 event after clocking 58.04 seconds.

Yesterday's morning also saw Mohd Hisham Khaironi set a new national record in the men's javelin throw F12 event.

Mohd Hisham erased the national record of 45.86 metres he himself set at the IPC Open Athletics Championship in Italy in March last year with a new record of 49.73 metres.

"My target was to achieve 50 metres but it was not fulfilled. Nonetheless, the distance of more than 49 metres was good enough," he said.

With that record-breaking effort, he collected a silver medal.

In the men's long jump F44 event, luck was not with Saiful Dawang and he had to be contented with the silver medal.

"I am disappointed as there was only a difference of 0.02 centimetres for me to take the gold medal," he said.

In the event, Saiful made a jump of 5.57 metres compared to 5.59 metres by the gold medallist from Indonesia.

In the morning session, Malaysia also obtained a silver medal from Nurul Farizai Mat Hussin in the women's long jump F44/F46 event with a jump of 4.17 metres. — Bernama
