City’s iconic cat statue turns blue for World Diabetes Day Posted: 21 Nov 2013 08:32 AM PST by Anasathia Jenis, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on November 22, 2013, Friday KUCHING: The cat statue at Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman turned blue on Wednesday night to commemorate World Diabetes Day. Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) in collaboration with the Malaysian Diabetes Association Sarawak branch and state Health Department lit the city's landmark in blue to raise public awareness of the disease. "So we start with lighting up the statue blue, which represents the colour of diabetes at international level, to remind the people of the importance to give priority to their health to get rid of diabetes," said Kuching North Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai. "The statue will be lighted up in blue for the next 10 days." City folk, in particular, must be aware of the dangers of diabetes which could give rise to other complications, he cautioned. "Diabetes is one of the silent killers. Since the incidence is high, the complications are worse for the patients," he said. ‘Hold more activities to create greater awareness on diabetes’ Posted: 21 Nov 2013 08:31 AM PST Posted on November 22, 2013, Friday KUCHING: More programmes should be conducted to raise public awareness about diabetes including raising funds for the benefit of diabetics and social workers. Chairman of Diabetes Malaysia (Sarawak branch) Dr William Voon said that part proceeds from a fund-raising project would help to finance the construction of a diabetes centre at Maxwell Road here which is scheduled for completion in early next year."The centre will be open to members of the public where they can learn more about diabetes. The centre will also provide blood tests to enlighten the visitors on complications associated with diabetes. "Visitors can also ask questions, and should one be diagnosed with diabetes, one will be provided with counselling," he said, adding that there would be a shop where one could buy diabetes-related items at cheaper prices. Dr Voon added: "Usually when it comes to fund-raising, diabetes is often not included. We are therefore truly grateful for this opportunity (having a centre) where we can raise awareness about the disease. "Most of the time, people don't see diabetes as a serious ailment, so it's extremely important for us to create more awareness about it so people can be diagnosed if they suffer from it. Dr Voon added that the incidence of diabetes among Malaysians had increased from three in 10 people in the not too distant past to one in five people now. Diabetes is associated with a wide array of complications such as blindness, heart attacks, kidney failure, stroke, skin infections, leg amputations and even impotence. He said this at a press conference at Harbour View Hotel here yesterday where he also thanked the hotel for providing them an opportunity to hold the fund-raising activity. Members of the public who wish to participate in the charity bazaar and spread cheer during the festive season are advised to contact Irene (082-274608 / 016-8887000) for further information. With Christmas just a month away, Harbour View Hotel is also contributing to the joy and cheer this festive season with their Christmas Charity Bazaar. This year, they are holding their bazaar on Dec 15 in aid of Diabetes Malaysia (Sarawak branch). "Each department at Harbour View Hotel will be setting up stalls featuring authentic, home-cooked food. The bazaar will start at 8am," said Irene Tan the hotel's head of sales. "Patrons to the bazaar will have the opportunity to purchase a wide selection of food, drinks, sundries and even hair cutting services. Coupons at RM10 each or RM100 for an entire booklet, are available for sale at the hotel," she said. << Previous Entry - Next Entry >> To enable your comment to be published, please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks. Christmas already in the air with early shoppers in Miri Posted: 21 Nov 2013 08:28 AM PST by Cindy Lai, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on November 22, 2013, Friday MIRI: Christmas is about a month away, but shoppers here are already into an early shopping spree at major shopping complexes here. Retailing shops and outlets were also spotted putting up Christmas décor to attract the early crowd. According to Chan, a representative from Boulevard Shopping Mall, aside from setting up decorations to create the festivity mood, Christmas ornaments, lights, trees as well as other related items that sought after by customers have been flying off the shelves from as early as the beginning of November. "Usually, customers choose to do early shopping to avoid any last-minute congestion. Therefore, we would prepare for this possibility and also the due competition," he said. "Despite the price hike, shoppers are still increasing in numbers, which I believe means they could have planned their shopping in a manner of buying only necessary items." From the colourful LED lights, to stockings and flowery hangers, Christmas trees and accessories, Chan revealed that every item are available on sale in various sizes, quality and prices, where "shoppers are more likely to shop happily with all the choices". Apart from 'physically buying in the store', retailers face another steep competition whereby cheaper quality items could be purchased easily from online stores at their fingertips. Wyjane Lai, a frequent online shopper at China's popular shopping portal 'Taobao', said the quick purchasing procedure, cheap prices and merchandise arriving at the doorstep is one reason why shopping portals are fast becoming popular. "Even though I love to shop that way, I would still caution from possible fraud," she told The Borneo Post, adding that initially she too was cheated by fraudsters. A quick browse by The Borneo Post found that the shopping portal has already been promoting Christmas sales using slogans like 'Get ready for Christmas', 'Christmas Trees under $10USD'. "I could possibly find everything under the sun without going under the sun and there is no good reason for me not to shop on the Internet," Lai commented. << Previous Entry - Next Entry >> To enable your comment to be published, please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks. DBNA Miri branch joins chorus to tell Perkasa off Posted: 21 Nov 2013 08:23 AM PST Posted on November 22, 2013, Friday MIRI: Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) Miri yesterday echoed the view of many Sarawakians about Perkasa, telling the extremist group not to even dream of stepping foot in the state, let alone open a branch here. DBNA Miri chairman, Captain Bernard Idit, says there is no place in Sarawak for extremist organisations like Perkasa, which is known to play up racial and religious issues to stir up the peace and harmony among the various races. In fact, he said DBNA Miri supported Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) president Tan Sri William Mawan's earlier warning for Perkasa to stay away from Sarawak. "Sarawak is a multi-racial and multi-religious state and we have been able to put aside our differences and live in peace and unity for ages. "We respect the race and religion of one another and this has enabled us to live in peace and harmony. Here in Miri, which has Chinese, Malays, Melanaus, Ibans, Bidayuhs, Kedayans, Orang Ulus and others among its multi racial population, the inter-racial and inter-religious relationship has always been good. People are living together in harmony for ages," he said. Bernard said the presence of Perkasa in Sarawak might lead to chaos and hatred among the multi-racial and multi-religious society, very much like what Perkasa had done in the Peninsula. "If Perkasa comes here, it may at first show only its positive side but as soon as it has established its presence by opening a branch it will start to sow hatred among the multi-racial and multi-religious people in the state. "Groups that are fighting against Perkasa's intention to spread its wings to Sarawak have the right to do so, because the organisation led by Datuk Ibrahim Ali hates non-Muslims and has called for the burning of the Alkitab (bible) not long ago. Ibrahim posted a statement on his Facebook on Nov 19, slamming certain NGOs and state oppositions who were urging the government to prevent the Malay radical group from opening branches in Sarawak, on the ground of extremism. Ibrahim said that resistance to Perkasa's entry into the state was 'uncivilised', and 'left behind on information' as Perkasa had existed in all states, including in Sarawak, since four years ago. << Previous Entry - Next Entry >> To enable your comment to be published, please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks.
