MSNS enter MoU with SeDidik

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 12:13 PM PST

KUCHING: Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) is optimistic of producing more talented gymnasts with the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with SeDiDik of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) that run a KinderGym programme.

"With this MoU, MSNS will come in to offer courses and to coach the gymnasts. It means a lot not only because Sarawak is hosting Sukma 2016 but we are also looking beyond that," said MSNS director, Francis Nyurang Ding.

He said such collaboration would augur well for the development of gymnastics in Sarawak especially when it is hoping to shine in the sports.

"We look forward to our gymnasts representing the country in higher level international competitions such as SEA Games, Commonwealth Games and even Olympics," he told a simple signing ceremony held at Menara SEDC here yesterday.

The MoU was signed by Francis and SeDiDik Sdn Bhd acting general manager, Siti Rodziah Bunsu Drahman.

Francis expressed the confidence for the state to have more talented gymnasts just like Esmelda Arecia Menti Alfred Geling who was recently honoured as Sukma's Best Sportswoman.

"Not only has Esmelda Arecia outperformed gymnasts outside Sarawak, she is also the youngest ever gymnast being awarded Sukma sportswoman of the year," he enthused.

He conceded the development of gymnastics in Sarawak faced difficulties due to the uniqueness of the sport where there is presently only one gymnastics centre available here.

Present during the signing ceremony was Assistant Minister of Tourism Datuk Talib Zulpilip who is also SEDC chairman.

"We are now a step ahead. Let's see if we can move further forward by looking into the opportunities of working together with other agencies or organisations," he said on the collaboration would see SeDiDik move another step towards empowering human capital.

Through the MoU, SeDiDik will contribute to the pooling and recruitment of new talents in gymnastics for MSNS where its teachers will be trained in using proper sports equipment and undergo special certified coaching courses with the council.

KUCHING: Kuching Amateur Swimming Association (Kasa) 2010 are confident of its chances in the Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Wong Soon Kai Inter-Club Swimming Championships at the Aquatics Centre, Youth and Sports Complex this weekend.

The team will enter 78 of its top swimmers to the two-day event which they finished third place last year.

Kasa 2010 advisor and head coach, Anthony Kong said yesterday the swimmers are expected to give the other contenders a good fight especially in the Boys' and Girls' Group 4 (9-10 years) as the majority of them are from this group.

"We should also be doing well in Group 5 which will be keenly contested while the spoils are expected to be evenly distributed among those in Group 3 (11-12 years) and upwards," he enthused.

Close fights are also expected in Group 1 (15-17 years) and Group 2 (13-14 years) especially in the sprints as the competitors are evenly matched.

"There will be some surprises and I am hoping that many new records will be created as well," Kong said as he foresees a crowded aquatics centre on the competition days on Nov 30 and Dec 1 as parents and relatives of swimmers are coming to watch the races.

One advantage for Kasa 2010 swimmers is that they will be enjoying the home ground advantage as they have been training here for more than two years.

"We have a training squad of more than 70 swimmers with ages ranging from five years to 18 years and about 90 per cent of them will be taking part in this championship," added Kong.

The rest of the trainees are either sitting for their SPM or going on holiday vacations.

Not knowing the strengths of the teams from outside the state, Kong said Sibu, who are the defending champions, will be the team to watch out again this year.

"Their Boys Group 2 will be very strong and the team will be powered by Nee Gui Ping, Alex Tiong Sie Hung and twin brothers Ngu Jiung We and Ngu Jiung Jing," he said.

Other swimmers to watch out for is 10-year-old Cheng Ka Man from Blue Marlin Swimming Club, Sukma swimmer Angela Chieng Chui Fei and Tan Tyng from Kota Samarahan Amateur Swimming Association, Tan Choon Heng from Miri Amateur Swimming Association and Adrian Chua, Natasha Teo from Kasa 2010.

Two hundred and sixty-four swimmers from 15 swimming clubs/associations from Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei and Peninsula Malaysia will take art in the two-day annual meet which is aimed at unearthing new talents especially from Group 3-5.

The teams are Kasa 2010, Kotas, Sasa, Masa, Basa, Kapit Amateur Swimming Association, Blue Marlin (Sabah), Sea Dragon (Sabah), Gymkhana Club Miri, Special Olympics Sarawak, Royal Brunei Recreation Club, Kelab Renang Pujut Miri, Rakan Akuatik Remaja, Banang Swim Club, Kelab Renang MSSC.

The swimmers from Special Olympics Sarawak are autistic and will compete against normal swimmers in their respective events.

A total of 84 events to be competed include freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly for 50m and 100m as well as boys/girls relays and mixed relays.

United brush off Bayer to reach last 16

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 12:11 PM PST

LEVERKUSEN, Germany: Manchester United confirmed their place in the Champions League's knock-out phase with an emphatic 5-0 win at an overwhelmed Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday.

It was United's biggest away win in Europe since beating Shamrock Rovers 6-0 in September 1957 in the now defunct European Champions Clubs' Cup as David Moyes' side ran riot.

"This is probably the best performance of the season. For us to come away from home and score five goals is really special," said Moyes.

A volley from right-back Antonio Valencia and an own goal from Leverkusen centre-back Emir Spahic gave United a commanding early lead before defender Jonny Evans added a third with an hour gone.

England defender Chris Smalling added their fourth on 77 minutes after he met Wayne Rooney's chip at the back post.

Nani then latched on to a Ryan Giggs long ball for a fine solo goal for the fifth on 88 minutes with the Leverkusen defence in tatters.

England's Rooney proved he can create as well as finish as he had a hand in the first four goals in an outstanding performance.

It was his cross which Valencia converted and his free-kick which Spahic headed into his own net.

His shot led to Evans' goal and his deft chip beat Leverkusen's goalkeeper Bernd Leno and found Smalling unmarked for the fourth.

The result keeps David Moyes' United top of Group A and three points ahead of second-placed Shakhtar Donetsk, who United host at Old Trafford in a fortnight.

Donetsk's 4-0 win at home to Real Sociedad means Leverkusen drop to third in the group and a point behind the Ukrainians.

Having offered little resistance against United, Leverkusen now need to win at Real Sociedad in their final game, and hope United beat Donetsk.

Leverkusen deservedly suffered their first home defeat in 14 games since losing 2-1 to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga back in March.

"When you conceded five goals, there isn't much more to say," said Leverkusen striker Stefan Kiessling.

"We should never have allowed them so many chances to shoot."

Now unbeaten in 11 matches since September, United got their wish to be able to focus on improving their sixth place in the Premier League.

Despite all their pre-match talk about not being intimidated, as they were for their 4-2 defeat at Old Trafford in September, Leverkusen allowed United to dominate.

United's opener came when Kagawa won the ball in midfield, squared to Giggs, who found Rooney on the left wing.

The England striker floated his pass over two Leverkusen defenders and Kagawa, but found Valencia at the back post on 22 minutes.

The Premier League side doubled their tally when Rooney's free-kick was headed into his own net by Spahic, under pressure from United right-back Chris Smalling on 30 minutes.

Leverkusen had a brief passage of pressure just before the hour mark, but at the other end, Rooney slipped his marker and threatened a third goal.

It came moments later from a corner when Rooney forced Leno into a save and centre-back Evans collected the rebound, rounded the stranded Bayer goalkeeper and tapped home on 66 minutes. — AFP
