BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The country's leading mobile operator DST yesterday announced that mobile phone users subscribing to its services can now experience faster speeds of data transfer leading to an overall better Internet experience through its recently launched 4G LTE, Borneo Bulletin reported.

DST launched the much-anticipated fourth generation mobile technology service earlier this month, introducing new packages for its DST Go! Broadband Service subscribers. It is now available to all of its subscribed mobile phone users.

DST 4G LTE is an enhancement to the existing 3G network particularly towards data usage. Subscribers may opt for an upgrade to DST 4G LTE as an enhancement to their existing 3G service, DST explained in a press release yesterday.

To make use of the technology, existing subscribers of DST's post-paid and prepaid service, Prima and Easi will need to upgrade their SIM cards at any DST branch from Nov 29, 2013, according to a DST branch representative when asked yesterday.

In the press release, DST advised its subscribers to ensure that they are equipped with the essentials to enable the best experience of the 4G LTE service, including the use of compatible devices.

To enjoy higher speed Internet with the 4G LTE, the availability of its network is essential. "Some areas in Brunei are already within the 4G LTE coverage, though DST is currently working on expanding the coverage areas from time to time."

DST further explained that since 4G LTE is a data-only service, mobile users may experience a switch between 4G, 3G and 2G coverage when they make or receive voice calls or SMS. On devices' compatibility, DST 4G LTE network in Brunei works within the frequency spectrum of 1800MHz "Handset manufacturers will typically produce handsets with frequency spectrum that supports the operators' requirements in the respective country. 4G LTE smartphone availability and compatibility remains a challenge to both users and service providers. In Brunei itself, some devices that qualify DST 4G LTE frequency spectrum may not work due to other manufacturer's restrictions," DST added in the press release.

DST said with the 4G LTE technology, it will give users faster speeds and an overall better Internet experience. "It delivers enhanced online experience and a better data quality for work, for home and for play. With the faster download and surfing experience LTE users tend to consume almost twice the amount of data than that of non-LTE users."

However, it said experience will vary between users and is subject to factors like network coverage, types of devices, used, location between user and base-station and the nature of applications' accessed.
