KUCHING: A suspected thief was apprehended and beaten up by villagers after he and three accomplices broke into a house at Kampung Semaba, off Jalan Datuk Stephen Yong, here yesterday.

The incident happened around 1pm when the men were said to have entered a house in the village thinking no one was at home, only to come across the owner's son who immediately shouted to his neighbours for help.

The thieves immediately fled the house towards their getaway vehicle- a Perodua Viva- with the house owner's son and a large group of villagers in hot pursuit.

One of the suspects, a 40-year-old from Sri Aman, was eventually caught and given a heavy dose of street justice, while the remaining three accomplices were able to escape in their car.

The apprehended suspect was then handed over to the police and subsequently detained in lock-up pending further investigation.

A source disclosed that the suspects were believed to be responsible for an earlier house break-in in the same village not long ago.

In an unrelated incident, a man from Jalan Astana in Petra Jaya was arrested for drug possession following a raid at his house on Friday.

The 37-year-old married man was detained around 3pm by personnel from the district Narcotics Crime Investigation Department following a tip-off about the suspect being involved in drug-related activities.

The suspect was said to have discarded a metal canister containing crystalline substance- believed to be syabu- out of the window of his house upon realising the arrival of police, but was caught in the act of doing so by sharp-eyed police.

He was later brought to the police station, where he tested negative for drug abuse, and held in lock-up pending further investigation.

Masked assailants attack reflexology centre manager for ‘sacking worker’

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 12:37 PM PST

KUCHING: A reflexology centre manager suffered cuts to two fingers on his right hand after he was attacked by three masked individuals in a suspected revenge attack yesterday.

The 60-something victim, a Chinese national, said the incident happened around 1.15am shortly after he started his night shift duty at the reflexology centre at Tabuan Road.

He said three masked men suddenly smashed the glass front door before bursting inside and rushing towards the front counter where he was seated.

One of them then swung a machete at his head, forcing him to deflect the blow with his hand while shouting to his workers for help.

As workers and several customers at the centre came to his aid, the masked attackers ran out the shop and fled the scene in a Perodua Viva.

When asked what the motive of the attack was, the manager said he believed it was a revenge attack in relation to him sacking one of his employees about two months ago.

He said the employee in question- a woman from China- was angry at him for firing her and had warned him then 'to be careful'.

Following the incident, the victim sought treatment at the Sarawak General Hospital for cuts to two of his fingers on his right hand.

Lucky break, only scrapes for family in morning crash

Posted: 23 Nov 2013 12:37 PM PST

KUCHING: A family of three was lucky to sustain only minor injuries after the motorcycle they were travelling on crashed into the side of a car yesterday morning.

The incident happened along Foochow Road No1 when the family, comprising a 40-something couple and their nine-year-old son, were heading back to their house in Pending.

According to witnesses at the scene, the accident occurred after a car first overtook the motorcycle before attempting to make a turn into a junction across the road despite the presence of a double line.

The sudden manoeuvre resulted in the motorcyclist slamming into the rear passenger door on the right side of the car and causing all three family members to fall off their machine.

Fortunately, the victims suffered only minor scrapes to their limbs and were sent in an ambulance to the Sarawak General Hospital for treatment.

In another accident, two friends escaped unhurt after their car plunged into a muddy ditch along Jalan Sultan Tengah yesterday afternoon.

The victims were travelling in a Proton Wira Aeroback to Kampung Buntal in Santubong when the 21-year-old driver lost control of his car while trying to avoid colliding with a motorcycle.

The car ended up going down a slope and landing inside a muddy ditch by the side of the road, prompting passing motorists to immediately stop and assist the victims out of the trapped vehicle.

Police personnel were on hand to control the flow of traffic, which came to a crawl on both sides of the road as a result of the incident.

The foreigner, who had worked for the couple for two months at their house, said they forced her to work even after she complained of the pain in her knee.

"Whenever I sit down to rest to nurse my painful knee, they would say I am lazy and order me to work," the woman said.

She said she has been in pain since a week ago.

When her employer refused to take her for medical treatment, the foreigner ran away from their house to seek the police's help.
