Crocodile vomits out human remains

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 11:36 AM PST

ROBAN: The riddle over a missing fisherman might be answered after part of a human body was recovered from Sungai Seblak around 9am yesterday.

Adrian Thomas, 32, was reported missing while checking a fishing net (belat) he had put up at the mouth of Sungai Budak not far from Lubuk Empelai near here last Friday.

According to a local resident, Mani Mangai, he saw a crocodile expelling the human body minus the head, both hands and legs from its mouth a few metres away from their boat, adding at first he and others with him thought it was plastic.

As they cautiously got closer to check, he narrated, they were shocked to discover that it was a part of a human body – from waist to shoulder – which they believe to be that of Adrian's.

Mani was with three others including a shaman by the name of Indet Senabong, the victim's father and longhouse headman Embol to check on the hook which they had placed in the river last Friday.

According to Indet, the location where they recovered the body was about 500 metres from where the victim was believed to have been attacked by the reptile.

He said locals call the place Teluk Berauh.

The body had been sent to Saratok Hospital for identification.

SK Long Busang buildings severely damaged by flood water, new term likely to be delayed

KUCHING: The flash flood that hit Long Busang on Tuesday damaged several buildings including those in the primary school of this remote Kenyah Badeng eight hours boat ride upstream of the Bakun dam.

Among the most severely damaged buildings are the teachers' quarters and the school dining hall.

As a result the school will not be able to start classes when the new term starts next year.

Belaga state assemblyman Liwan Lagang who visited the village yesterday to gauge the damage wreaked by the flood said although the flood water receded after only five hours it left behind a trail of destruction.

"The water level of the river was so high that all four teachers' quarters and the students' dining hall were submerged up to the roof. All equipment including computers were damaged.

"When the flood water receded, it left these buildings tilted and unfit for occupation. I am worried that the school would not be able to start class next year," Liwan told The Borneo Post after returning from his inspection trip.

The Culture and Heritage Assistant Minister said a lot of property was lost but he was unable to estimate the total loss value.

"The people there really need help now as flood water had entered into their houses. The flash flood had also destroyed their padi crop," said Liwan.

Hulu Rajang MP Wilson Ugak Kumbong and the representative of Mukah MP Datuk Seri Muhd. Leo Michael Toyad, Kenil Jaraiie, also visited the village to render immediate aid.

Liwan and Ugak disbursed RM15,000 each and Toyad, RM10,000 to the 73 families comprising 500 people affected by the flood.

Welfare officers had also reached Long Busang to bring food and other daily necessities for the flood victims.

The flash flood was the second to hit the village in recent years.

The last flood which local villagers remembered occurred in 2008 which they said was more severe than the latest one.

i-CATS to take over Inti College campus

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 11:34 AM PST

KUCHING: International College of Advanced Technology Sarawak (i-CATS) will take over the campus of Inti College Sarawak in a deal worth RM22 million, following a shares sale agreement (SSA) signing ceremony yesterday.

This answered speculations over which institution would snap up the soon-to-be vacated 1.4 hectare facilities at Jalan Stampin Timur here, after Inti announced in January that it was to wind down its operations in Sarawak by end of this year due to declining student numbers

The new campus will be named as i-CATS West Campus, and its first intake will be in July next year while the staff will move four months earlier. The present i-CATS operation, on the other hand, will remain at Jalan Canna and will be named as i-CATS East Campus.

Already, both i-CATS and its related institution Sarawak Skills Development Centre (PPKS) are wasting little time in utilising the new facilities, by holding their convocation ceremonies at the Inti College's auditorium next Tuesday and Wednesday (Dec 3 and 4).

President of i-CATS and chairman of PPKS Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain said the new i-CATS West Campus will accommodate up to 3,000 students, while the i-CATS East Campus will have 1,500 students.

"The first intake (for i-CATS West Campus) will be in July next year, while the staff will be moving in by March. Some of the staff from Inti College Sarawak are in the process of being absorbed by us," he told reporters after the SSA signing ceremony between PPKS subsidiary PPKS Ilmu Sdn Bhd and Inti Education Sdn Bhd.

The signing ceremony took place at the State Secretary's office in Wisma Bapa Malaysia and was witnessed by the State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Morshidi Abdul Ghani himself and Aziz.

Meanwhile, the chief executive officer of i-CATS, Dato Baharuddin Abdullah, said the SSA signing demonstrated PPKS Ilmu's commitment as a technical training and education provider since the existing campus at Jalan Canna, Tabuan Jaya will not be able to accommodate the increasing student population and expansion plan for more training facilities.

"As a start, we at the i-CATS West Campus will be focussing more on business, management, tourism and hospitality courses, and expect to commence business by July 2014 pending regulatory approval from the Ministry of Education.

"This development is in tandem with our efforts to realise our vision of turning i-CATS to university college status in 2017. The establishment of this new campus also sees our institution's commitment in assisting to train and produce large number of competent workforce either in skill-based or academic background," he said, adding their vision was to build a competent workforce for the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).

He also mentioned that i-CATS has trained almost 10,000 graduates in Higher National Diploma, Diploma and Certificate courses since its establishment in 2002.

Inti Education Sdn Bhd's chief financial officer Roberto Antonides said although they were closing down in Sarawak, the education group was very proud of the legacy they had left behind in the state.

He mentioned over 10,000 people graduated from Inti College Sarawak over the period of two decades, which had impacted the lives of many since it commenced its Sarawak operations in 1991.

"We're very happy and proud that i-CATS is taking over the physical facilities of our Kuching campus. We are confident that i-CATS, which has an excellent track record, will make very good use of the infrastructure to provide excellent academics and skill-based training to produce a knowledgeable and competent workforce for Sarawak," he said.

Inti College Sarawak moved into the 1.4 hectare campus, formerly the premises of St Patrick's School, at Jalan Stampin Timur in December 1992. Once rated as one of the best private educational institutions in Sarawak, the college even attracted foreign students from Indonesia and Africa.

Following the phasing-out, it stopped enrolling new students, while the current students would be transferred to Inti International University in Nilai, Negri Sembilan or Inti colleges in Subang, Penang and Sabah,

BN Backbenchers Club to step up political activities

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 11:33 AM PST

KUCHING: Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club (BNBBC) Sarawak will continue to hold political activities in its drive for Barisan Nasional (BN).

Its chairman Abdullah Saidol said that with the state election approaching, BNBBC has a few plans in the pipeline to strengthen its presence among the people.

"Among the future activities that will be carried out are that we will be carrying out some cross-visiting ourselves.

"Apart from that, we will also strengthen our respective units such as through Saberkas to draw in youths towards understanding the political principles of BN," he said at the BNBBC Sarawak post-DUN sitting dinner which was graced by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib on Wednesday.

The Semop assemblyman also noted that more efforts would be placed on the importance of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) to the people in the respective areas.

"We will try to instil the knowledge on SCORE, which although has been mentioned a number of times, I believe that not everybody understands the essence of SCORE and how it benefits each of the respective areas," he said.

With today's social media such as Facebook and blogs serving as a platform to reach out to the people, Saidol emphasised that moving on the ground to meet the people was still regarded as the tradition of politics.

"We must ensure that we strengthen our base in our respective areas because though we have achieved quite a victory in the 13th General Election we should not be complacent.

"The challenge for the upcoming state election will be different and thus we must stay focussed and continue to move forward towards success," he stressed.

"We will not commit like the opposition where PAS promised heaven, DAP promised miracle and PKR promised perfection but we promise determination, courage and sincerity in upholding BN's crusade towards a better and greater Sarawak," he added.

Among those present at the dinner were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, DUN speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar, state ministers and assistant ministers.

Fire leaves family of 12 homeless

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 11:31 AM PST

by Margaret Ringgit, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on November 29, 2013, Friday

MIRI: A fire razed a two-storey semi-concrete house in Kampung Pengkalan Lutong yesterday leaving a family of 12 homeless.

One of the victims, Nur Qamarina Abdul Malik, 24, said when the fire started at 1.30pm, there were four other family members in the house with her — her mother Limah Jamin, her daughters aged four and one, as well as her brother-in-law.

"Seven other family members were away working," a tearful Nur Qamarina told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Two fire engines with 13 firefighters from the Lopeng Fire Station rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call around 1.40pm.

Nur Qamarina said the fire started from the kitchen, which was located on the first floor.

"I could not sleep so I walked towards the kitchen as I wanted to prepare some food for my two young kids but was shocked to see thick smoke and flames coming out," she recalled.

She then dashed to her room to get the two girls who were asleep.

"Then I rushed to my mother's room and woke her up. I screamed 'Fire! Fire!' at her," said Nur Qamarina. "Praise to 'Allah' that all of my family members are safe."

Limah also voiced her thankfulness that none in her family were hurt.

"Upon hearing my daughter screaming, I ran towards the kitchen and tried to put out the fire.

"Unfortunately, the fire had spread swiftly to the ceiling," she related.

She then dashed back to her room to try to save essential documents.

"All I could think of at that time was the safety of my family and myself. As I could not save the documents, I rushed outside," said Limah.

Nur Qamarina said her mother had earlier prepared kuih bingka for family members.

"Tonight (last night), there was supposed to be a family dinner gathering with our relatives from Johor," she added.
