Construction worker claims wife kidnapped Posted: 06 Jan 2014 11:30 AM PST SIBU: A construction site worker from Jakar, Sarikei, believes his wife has been abducted and has lodged two police reports. The first report was lodged at Jakar police station around midnight yesterday and the second report at Sibu Central Police Station yesterday morning. While Sulau Ajah, 45, was lodging a report at Sibu Central, he phoned his 51-year-old wife Tayu Datu numerous times but every time their conversation was abruptly ended. He claimed someone was disrupting the calls, with his subsequent calls to her handphone failing to get through. During one of the earlier calls, his wife said she had been blindfolded and taken to the outskirts of Selangau, according to Sulau. Sulau said his wife had a medical appointment with the Sibu Hospital yesterday, and had gone to stay in their son's house in Kemuyang on Sunday. He said she left their son's house at 9.30am for the hospital, and had gone missing since. "I phoned her and she told me she was brought away by a woman she did not know. "The conversation ended abruptly," he said, claiming that someone must have taken the phone and ended the call. Abdul Karim: Malaysia moderate despite occasional ‘hiccups’ Posted: 06 Jan 2014 11:28 AM PST by Jonathan Chia, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on January 7, 2014, Tuesday KUCHING: Malaysia is still a moderate country even though voices of extremism do spring up once in a while. Assistant Youth Development Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said as such the people should view the whole situation objectively. "We need not be alarmed as those that got agitated and those that started barking here and there are those who have ulterior motives … mostly to get some publicity. "Some of them may want to become champion, while others may feel good seeing their name in the newspapers," he told The Borneo Post yesterday. Abdul Karim, who is also Asajaya assemblyman, said this when commenting on the recent seizure of Bibles by Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) and the prohibition of Christians in Selangor to use the word 'Allah' in church services. "Generally, Malaysians are very down to earth, and we respect each others' culture and religion. Somehow at times, the different cultures and beliefs crossed path because of inter-marriages or conversion, and we have been able to address it nicely." He added that the 'Kalimah Allah' issue was actually a non-issue, adding it was up to the believers how they wanted to address their God. "Whether you want to call your God as Allah, God, Kudus, John or Ali, it is up to you. "Somehow, when some people start getting paranoid and say that 'Allah' is exclusive for themselves for reason only known to themselves, then we face this problem." Abdul Karim hoped Muslims and Christians alike would exercise restraint and not get overboard in addressing these problems. "Criticise you may, but don't be extreme in your views and action. Muslims should open up." Abdul Karim said he was proud that many wanted to use the word 'Allah' as their God because when he took up Bible study as a subject in Form Five Senior Cambridge Examination in 1977, never had he came across 'Allah' being use as referral for the Christian God. "If the Christian want to use it now, I would say 'alhamdulillah'. Muslims should not get agitated and angry." Meanwhile, Ba'Kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian, when contacted, said the two incidence showed that the country's leaders were inconsistent and, therefore, perceived as weak and insincere by the international community. "It also shows that religious groups in Malaysia cannot be controlled and checked by the government, and we are indeed sliding very fast down the slippery road of extremism. "Besides that, it shows that our leaders don't and cannot walk the talk." To enable your comment to be published, please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks. No report lodged against school canteen operators in Sarawak Posted: 06 Jan 2014 11:24 AM PST KUCHING: There has been no report of school canteen operators in the state hiking the price of food items. Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah and Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism state director Wan Ahmad Uzir Wan Sulaiman both said their files are empty. "So far, I have not received any report (about canteen operators in the state hiking the price of food items)," she said when contacted by The Borneo Post yesterday. Wan Uzir too gave the same reply when contacted. The question was posed following a statement by the Ministry of Education that it would investigate a report that canteen operators across the country had increased the price of food items. Fatimah, who is also minister-in-charge of education in the state, said school canteen operators were bound by an agreement that covered the type of food, price, weight or volume of the items that can be sold. Wan Uzir said canteen operators had to follow the prices agreed between them and the school during tender. "The Ministry of Education can take action against school canteen operators if they increased the prices that are against what was agreed during the tender." He added that his ministry could take action only if school canteen operators had wrongly displayed price tags. "Let's say if they increased the price of a 50 sen item by 10 sen to 60 sen, and the canteen operator displayed the correct price tag, my ministry cannot take action against the canteen operators. My ministry can only take action if the price tag is 50 sen but the item is actually sold for 60 sen." Leave Soon Koh, four senior members alone — SUPP Bau Posted: 06 Jan 2014 11:23 AM PST KUCHING: SUPP Bau branch is urging the party's Central Working Committee (CWC) not to expel SUPP Sibu chief Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh and four other senior members. The branch made this call yesterday as the monthly CWC meeting is scheduled to be held here tonight. Its secretary Chin Puh Nam said in a press statement that although expulsion would earn some respect for the party, it could result in the four senior members, namely Chan Phan Chan, Wong Yew Nung, Thomas Hii King Hing and Sia Jii Ming, leaving the party as well. "We believe these four members who are aligned to Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh will be following in his footsteps and leave SUPP in the event that the motion to expel Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh is passed. "Is it even worth it to resort to this?" Rumours are rife that the CWC meeting, which will start at 7pm at SUPP headquarters, include discussions on disciplinary actions against Wong, who refused to respond to the show-cause letter issued by the party's central secretariat after the Central Committee (CC) met on December 1, as he deemed it to be "not legitimate." Wong also regarded the letter as illegal as the Registrar of Societies (ROS) had yet to announce its decision on complaints regarding election irregularities at some party branches in the run-up to the party's Triennial Delegates' Conference on Dec 11, 2011. In view of this, Chin called upon the party leadership to thoroughly think through and reconsider before making their decision.
