MIRI: The Dayak Association Miri (DAM) anticipates that 2014 will be a busy and challenging year, but it is geared up to face it.

First, it will be tasked to lead the '2014 Miri Divisional Pre- Gawai Celebration', scheduled in May.

Secondly, it is working on an education programme on Iban language and culture in support of the study of the language in schools, colleges and universities, to be implemented in collaboration with organisations that share the interest.

The third task is – the Education Committee needs to look into ways on how to help rural schoolchildren improve their academic performance
and succeed in the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) or Primary 6 public examination.

Those are the tough tasks ahead for DAM; nevertheless, its president Jonathan Bedindang said they would not be daunted nor discouraged – thus would strive to do their utmost to go through the hurdles to achieve the goal.

"The tasks ahead are tough and challenging.

"However, with the support and cooperation of all committee members, we hope the main Key Performance Index for 2014 could be achieved," Bedindang vowed.

The president said this when asked by The Borneo Post recently on their resolutions for the New Year.

To a question, Bedindang said he was happy with the few significant achievements in 2013, provoking them to be more spirited to face the challenges ahead.

DAM's one big success in 2013 was the `Malam Main Asal & Jaku Iban' (Iban Language and Traditional Culture Night), held at Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club in October.

It was organised jointly by DAM, Institute of Teachers Education, Sarawak Campus, Miri and Serakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS).

At the function, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, who is also Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture, stressed the need for unity through understanding of Iban culture and the development of Iban language as it has relevant significance.

Several Iban intellectuals and prominent figures were present at the auspicious occasion.

Among them were the head of Modern Language Department of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) Dr Chemaline Osup, senior officer from the Ministry of Education Padang Luna and Tun Jugah Foundation representative Janang Ensiring.

US charges suspect over Chinese consulate arson attack ...

Posted: 07 Jan 2014 02:40 PM PST

LOS ANGELES: US investigators have arrested a Chinese-born man over an arson attack on China's consulate in San Francisco which triggered strong protest from Beijing, officials and reports said Monday.

Yan Feng, 39, who lives south of the city, surrendered to police on Friday and has been charged with criminal offenses including causing damage to a diplomatic mission, said the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

According to an affidavit, he "detonated incendiary or explosive devices in the vicinity of the front entrance of the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco on January 1, causing significant property damage," said an FBI statement.

The Chinese native, who is a permanent US resident, told federal agents that he was driven not by politics but by "voices he had been hearing," according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

He called police two days after the New Year's Day blaze, which seriously damaged the consulate's entrance, and said via a Mandarin-language interpreter that he had "made the fire," it said.

The attack, which came on the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Washington and Beijing, was condemned by the consulate as a "despicable act" and is under police investigation. — AFP

Bosnian Muslims send images of corpses to Serb politicians ...

Posted: 07 Jan 2014 02:39 PM PST

SARAJEVO: Muslim victims of Bosnia's war sent postcards showing corpses taken from a mass grave to 5,000 Serb politicians on Monday, ahead of the anniversary of the creation of a separate Bosnian Serb-run political entity.

The gruesome images showed corpses exhumed last year from a mass grave uncovered in northeastern Bosnia containing hundreds of bodies believed to be those of Muslims and Croats tortured and killed by Bosnian Serb forces at the beginning of the 1992-1995 war.

The cards were sent by associations representing Muslim victims in an effort to deter Serb politicians from celebrating the upcoming anniversary.

The Serb-run political entity was created on January 9, 1992 on the eve of the bloody war that claimed some 100,000 lives in Bosnia.

The Dayton agreement that ended the war in late 1995 left Bosnia divided into two semi-independent entities, the Republika Srpska and Muslim-Croat Federation, linked by a loose central government.

Bosnian Muslims seek the abolition of the Republika Srpska and a stronger central state.

Kada Hotic of the Mothers of Srebrenica association, said the Republika Srpska "lies on foundations of our sons' blood".

The 1995 massacre of some 8,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica by Bosnian Serb forces was qualified as genocide by the international justice, but has been persistently downplayed by Bosnian Serb politicians. — AFP
