THE recorded total number of admissions from both local and overseas visitors for this year's Matan Fishing Village Challenge was 7,040 entries, which is a five per cent increase from 2013, Borneo Bulletin reported.

This was highlighted yesterday by Pg Hj Abdul Rahman bin Pg Hj Zainal, the Village Head of Kg Sungai Matan, in his capacity as the Chairperson of the Matan Fishing Village Challenge 2014.

"Insya Allah, the number will increase even more in a year's time after the Cultural Tourism Building is expected to be completed this coming February and works are also currently in progress for a proposed Kg Ayer Boat Cruise," said Pg Hj Abdul Rahman.

The now bi-annual Matan Village Challenge is a project carried out by the Kg Sungai Matan Consultative Council.

Before this, the event had been held seven times since its inception as 'Pancing 1999'.

After 'Pancing 2001' (the second edition), the event was renamed 'Cabaran Pancing' in 2003.

The subsequent third, fourth and fifth editions in 2006, 2008 and 2010 continued the tradition before it was again renamed as 'Cabaran Matan Fishing Village' in 2012, which was held along the stretch of the Kg Sungai Matan wooden walkway.

This year, YB Hj Jumat bin Akim, a member of the Legislative Council, reigned supreme in Category A after catching a fish species called 'Gelama' under 26 minutes and weighing at 50 grammes.

Meanwhile, the team from Sg Matan Behamuk brought the biggest cheers after winning Category B with the most catch of fish (a total of 25).

In the afternoon, YB Hj Jumat also got his second win in Category C with his catch of the fish species called 'Umpak' weighing 427 grammes.

Category D was won by Dyg Halimah binti Hj Halihassim who caught the most number of fish (10).

Presenting prizes to all of the winners was the guest of honour and Acting Director of the Tourism Development Department, Hjh Mariani binti Hj Sabtu.

Organisers had earlier decided that the venue for this year's challenge would be unchanged from the previous edition and the event was slated for the first day of the New Year.

The Matan Fishing Village Challenge was hoped to promote Kg Sungai Matan as an eco-tourism destination for both local and overseas visitors including tourists.

The accumulated funds from the event will be distributed as donations for the village's orphans and will also be used as financial funds for the Consultative Council.

The event also aimed to foster closer ties among the country's fishing enthusiasts, introduce products made by the village residents, increase incomes through sales as well as to show support for the Kenali Negara Kita (KNK) project under the Tourism Development Department.

Category A was an individual category whereby a participant must catch fish under a 30-minute timeframe and the weight of the fish caught must not exceed 50 grammes.

Category B was a group category for four people who can catch the most fish and the weight of the fish must also not exceed 50 grammes.

Category C was an individual category whereby the participants must be able to catch the heaviest fish.

Category D is a women-only category whereby the women participants must catch the most number of fish also not exceeding 50 grammes.

Among other highlights of the event were the 15hp and 30hp speedboat races as well as kayaking with participants comprising mostly youths crossing the Brunei River.

The residents of Kg Sg Matan were also in high spirits yesterday and lent their support to the speedboat competitors and kayaking participants.
