LDP to look into setting up another wing

KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) will look into providing a better platform to draw in more participation from young people below the age of 30 to 35.

Its president, Datuk Teo Chee Kang, said the party would study the need to set up another wing under the party, or add in another platform in its existing Youth and Women wings.

"By doing so, we can learn to understand young people and allow them to have an opportunity to get to know about the political developments in the country," he said.

He noted the age limit for the Youth movement is under 45 years old while there is no age limit for the Women movement.

"We realize that it is difficult to attract the participation of young people under the age of 30 to 35 to join us based on our existing structure. We need to address the structure of our party, we must have a more suitable platform to attract or care for our young voters," he said after officiating at the closing ceremony of LDP Political Work Camp at Borneo Paradise Resort yesterday.

In the 13th general election (GE13), Teo said some three million of the electorate were first-time voters, with a majority of them aged under 30.

"We are predicting more first-time voters will register to vote in GE14. Adding three million more new voters, there will be six million voters under the age of 30 or 35 (in GE14)," he said.

Teo said young people nowadays have sufficient political awareness to decide which government they wanted.

"Voters under the age of 30 to 35 will determine the results of the next general election," he pointed out.

Teo said many of the younger generation do not read newspapers but prefer to learn about news on the Internet, blogs or Facebook, which might not be accurate. Hence, he said there was a necessity to provide a better platform by the party to attract young voters.

"We need to be closer to the younger generation to ensure that they get accurate information, and not be influenced by false information on the Internet," he reiterated.

On a related note, Teo said GE13 was a tough challenge for BN, but the coalition maintained as the ruling government of the country. BN in Sabah has also formed a strong government under the leadership of Chief Minister cum Sabah BN chairman Datuk Seri Musa Aman.

Moving forward, Teo urged LDP Youth and Women to play a more proactive role in the next general election by carrying out preparation work earlier in the constituencies where LDP candidates contested in, as well as work with BN component parties in other constituencies.

Earlier on, Teo thanked party members for giving him, LDP deputy president Senator Datuk Chin Su Phin and other leaders their support since the past four months till the day they received official recognition from the Registrar of Societies (ROS) Malaysia.

After receiving the official recognition from the ROS, Teo said LDP could now start implementing plans that had been decided on as well as executing party related affairs.

On the political work camp, he said the two-day event not only allowed the participants to learn more about LDP's political goals and structure, but also boosted the exchange of ideas and friendships among party members.

LDP criticises Bible confiscation, arrests

Posted: 05 Jan 2014 02:32 PM PST

KOTA KINABALU: The confiscation of some 300 copies of Bahasa Malaysia and Iban versions of the Bible and the arrest of two Christian leaders of the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) was a clear defiance to the freedom of religion which is enshrined in the Federal Constitution, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) president Datuk Teo Chee Kang said.

He said Article 11 provides that every Malaysian has the right to profess, practise and propagate his or her religion, subject to restriction on propagation of other religions to Muslims.

Article 3 provides that Islam is the religion of the Federation but other religions may be practised in peace and harmony, he said in a press statement yesterday.

Teo added that our country maintains two parallel justice systems, one based upon common laws and statutes enacted by the Parliament, the other is the Syariah. Syariah courts only have jurisdiction over Muslims.

Similarly, Teo pointed out that the Islamic Religious Department only have jurisdiction over persons who profess the Islamic faith.

"By conducting the raid, Jais had clearly crossed the line. To put in simple words, we now have a religious department entering another religious organization's premises without a warrant and seizing sacred books belonging to the latter!" he said.

Teo, who is also Minister of Special Tasks, said this was a blatant affront to the notion of mutual respect and acceptance which forms the bedrock of our nation since independence.

"Our national leaders must do the right thing to check, control and prevent the happening of similar incidents which may erode harmonious ethnic relations in the nation.

"Let Malaysia continue to be a model to the world as a multi-racial society that is governed with the principles of moderation," he said.

Meanwhile, STAR Sabah chief Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan urged Barisan Nasional leaders in Sabah to act on the Allah issue before it is too late.

He said the Sarawak BN leaders had spoken and taken a stand and now BN leaders in Sabah need to show courage and leadership in the face of adversity of their common foes from within and stand up to make a stand on the issue.

UMS to build nine-metre high 20th anniversary clock tower

Posted: 05 Jan 2014 01:47 PM PST

KOTA KINABALU: University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will be constructing a nine-metre high clock tower in hopes of it becoming a new landmark as part of its 20th celebration as an established institution of higher learning.

UMS vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah disclosed this yesterday during the launch of 'Healthy Exercise Programme', jointly organised by Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Yadim) and UMS Student Affairs and Alumni Department.

"As part of the celebration, UMS is also planning a host of activities that are of national and international standards," he said.

Harun announced that amongst these events would be a 'Malaysia Longest Distance Running on a Treadmill' organised by UMS' School of Education and Social Development, and School of Medicine, which would be held on Jan 20 at 1Borneo Hypermall.

"The goal of the event is to chart 264 hours or 11 days on the treadmill in hopes of breaking the Malaysia Book of Records for longest running time in rotation," he said, adding that the activity will involve nine UMS athletes.

He hoped that these events will not only improve UMS' stature but also make the university an active part of the government's tourism efforts for Visit Malaysia 2014.

"UMS will be organising several international conferences which would attract professors and scientists from around the world for the purpose of sharing research findings for community benefit," Harun added.

He also said that UMS is organising community programmes to strengthen communal ties between the university and society.

Meanwhile, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif, in welcoming the initiative here yesterday, said that health is an important aspect of daily life.

"Health is important for worship, but it also helps us to fulfil daily responsibilities and obligations efficiently," he said, adding that the programme is an innovative way to celebrate Maulidur Rasul.

He added that the programme is also indicative of the government's and organiser's appreciation of the role of the university as a treasure trove of knowledge to produce future leaders of calibre.

"I hope this programme would be the starting point for the younger generation to take on a more active role in future religious programmes of the state," he said.
