KUCHING: A five-year-old lost the tip of his middle finger after getting it caught in the floor of an escalator at a mall in Kota Samarahan on Thursday night.

The boy was riding up the escalator with family members around 8pm when he was said to have poked his right finger into a section of the floor, resulting in it becoming wedged inside.

Security guards at the mall immediately responded to the situation by shutting down the escalator and helping the boy's parents to free his trapped finger.

By then, however, the tip of his finger was already severed and he was subsequently sent to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for treatment.

In an unrelated incident, a man was admitted to SGH for head injuries after his car crashed into a tree at a roundabout in Stutong yesterday.

The 46-year-old victim was spotted by passing motorists around 3.30am sitting inside his damaged car and bleeding from a large gash on his head.

Kapitan: Up to bakeries to name prices, not association

KUCHING: Kuching-Samarahan Bread and Cake Makers' Association hopes their members would not raise the price of their products.

In any case, the association has no power to stop them if they wanted to.

Its chairperson Kapitan Mary Wong said even though the association had earlier announced a possible price hike of between 10 and 15 per cent, the plan was aborted.

"We did go public about increasing prices by as much as 15 per cent, but right after the announcement, the Malaysia Competition Commission issued us a letter requiring us to explain why we should mark up the prices.

"We were sort of warned that the announcement to increase prices infringed Competition Act 2010. Hence, the association has done nothing, but to give free reins to members," she told The Borneo Post when asked in phone interview why a few bakeries here had increased prices by over 20 per cent recently.

Malaysia Competition Commission is an independent body established under the Competition Commission Act 2012 to enforce the legislation. Its main role is to protect the competitive process for the benefits of businesses, consumers and the economy.

Wong pointed out it was now entirely up to the members whether to review their prices for bread, buns, cookies and cakes. In any case, Wong opined it would not be too much if bakers increased by 20 sen for a loaf of milk bread following the government's decision to withdraw sugar subsidies and also hiked the price of RON95 fuel.

She said those end products that were made of imported ingredients would most likely see a higher increase in price.

"If a loaf of bread is now sold for RM2.80, which is 20 sen more than the previous price, I do not see any problem with this. Bakers who use ingredients imported from Peninsular Malaysia or outside the country may have to hike up more in order not to make a loss." Wong said if consumers were unhappy with the price hike, they could always lodge a complaint with the association, which has more than 100 members.
