Taiwan increases agricultural exports to Brunei

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: For the first ten months of 2013, the trade worth between Taiwan and the Sultanate reached a total of US$87 million, showing a twenty two percent jump from the previously held record of US$71 million in 2012, Brudirect reported.

The representative from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Brunei Darussalam, Albert Huang, disclosed the figures at the launching of the Best Quality Ponkam (Chinese mandarin oranges) imported from Taichung City, Taiwan at the Warisan Utama Jaya Emporium in Jalan Muara.

Albert Huang also guarantees the quality of Taiwan's agricultural products whereby every year, the export of his homeland agricultural products reaches US$5 billion globally out of two percent of total exports. He noted that there are many potential opportunities in the region.

In 2014 alone, two containers housing forty tonnes of mandarin oranges are imported from Taichung City for the local market.

Ching Chiang Tsai, the Director-General of Taichung City Government's Agriculture Bureau said that Brunei offers a lucrative market for agricultural exports. His thoughts bear fruits as he pledged to bring in more quality fruits including grapes, loquats and lychees to the Sultanate.

During the launching, twenty one male and fourteen females participated in a mandarin orange eating competition. As a result, Rolanda Margaran won the competition and took home a BND$300 voucher and a box of mandarin oranges. Taimur came second followed by Agus Sahroni and Hon See Yee in the third place.

Female category was won by Tan Joo Cheng with Alda Lo in second position followed by Siew Kheng in third.
