KUCHING: A local man was detained yesterday on suspicion of being involved in diesel-smuggling activities after he attempted to fill up at a petrol station with a modified pickup truck.

Acting on information received, a team from Central Police Station monitored a petrol station at Tabuan Road and detained a 30-year-old man from Jalan Datuk Amar Stephen Yong, who showed up around 11.30am in a Toyota Hilux.

A subsequent inspection of the vehicle's bucket, which was covered with tarpaulin, revealed a modified tank fitted with a pump system and connected to the pickup's fuel tank.

Both the suspect and his vehicle were then handed over to the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism for further action.

The 21-year-old, who was travelling with a 43-year-old friend, was said to be beating the red light at a traffic light intersection when he crashed into a car around 1pm.

He ended up fracturing his left arm and left leg, and was taken to the Sarawak General Hospital for treatment.

His friend and the car driver were unhurt in the accident.

SIBU: A mother has claimed that her 13-year-old daughter, who is into her fifth month of pregnancy, was raped by a teenage boy.

She took the girl to a clinic for a check-up on Tuesday and then brought her to the police station to lodge a report.

Police arrested the 18-year-old suspect at his house that night.

According to the victim, the suspect took her to different budget hotels once in January and again in April.

She said before Gawai Dayak, she found out she was pregnant and told him.

He reportedly promised to marry her, but withdrew this the next day as his parents are said to have objected to the union.

The girl kept the pregnancy to herself until Sunday, when she finally revealed all to her mother.

When police arrested the suspect, they confirmed that he was accused of a similar crime last year with a different 13-year-old girl.

The court case is pending and the boy had pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He was absent from the case proceedings and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Police are expected to conduct a DNA test when the baby of the second 13-year-old girl is born in November..

Sell SCORE in China, Sarawak told

Posted: 02 Jul 2014 12:49 PM PDT

by Peter Sibon, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on July 3, 2014, Thursday

KUCHING: Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) is a goldmine, but Chinese investors would not come unless they know its growth potential, said Liu Quan, Chinese Consulate General in Kuching.

Hence, he said the onus was for Sarawak to disseminate the latest information about SCORE to the huge China market.

Liu said China planned to invest US$500 billion (RM1.5 trillion) globally, including in Asean, in the next five years, and Sarawak should woo some of the investors to its shores.

"But first, SCORE must provide the latest information to the Chinese market so that they know (the potential). After they know more about SCORE, they can find good partners here because having the right partner is very important," Liu told reporters covering the courtesy call on him by Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) and Housing Development Corporation (HDC) members at his office here yesterday.

SCCI members were led by its president Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg while HDC members were led by its chairman Datuk Abang Abdul Rauf Zain.

"I think the delegation from China that will be coming here after Hari Raya can sit down for a discussion about SCORE. I myself have gone to Bintulu and I know most of the land there has been allocated to different sectors," said Liu.

"So, I hope many Chinese firms will be interested to invest in SCORE."

He told his guests that China's Ambassador to Malaysia, Dr Huang Huikang, who recently paid courtesy calls on the Yang di-Pertua Negeri and Chief Minister, was optimistic that investors from China would be keen to explore business opportunities in Sarawak.

Liu reiterated that China looked at Malaysia as a strategic partner in Asean, especially after the visit of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to his country recently in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries.

"We have a special relationship. We look at Malaysia as a very stable and conducive country to invest, and Sarawak has good harmony between the Chinese, the Bidayuhs, the Ibans and the Malays. So we can have a good bridge between China and Sarawak."

He thus hoped the close ties between the business community in China and Sarawak could be enhanced.

Serian to be transformed into a must-stop centre — Manyin

Posted: 02 Jul 2014 12:46 PM PDT

SERIAN: Numerous projects are being planned to make Serian a must-stop centre in the near future.

In revealing this yesterday, Infrastructure Development and Communications Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin said among them was a proposed multi-million ringgit permanent food court.

"The proposed site for this project is at the present tennis court and the council (Serian District Council) is going to apply for the land soon from the state government as the owner of the site," he said.

Speaking to reporters after being briefed on the progress of Serian mini sports complex upgrading project, the Tebedu assemblyman said when completed and operational the food court would be a crowd puller for Serian town.

"The proposed food court, which is estimated to cost RM4 million with 87 stalls, will be built on a raised floor where the ground floor will be used as car park," he explained.

He said the proposed project was among the council's efforts to make Serian a vibrant town and a must-stop centre for travellers.

"At the meantime, the council has also been told to keep the town clean and at the same time try to improve the traffic flow by putting up more road diversions to reduce congestions particularly during festive occasions," he said.

On the on-going upgrading to Serian mini sports complex, Manyin said he was satisfied with the progress although it was behind by two per cent.

"The delay, according to the contractor, was caused by a late start. The project was supposed to kick off in January 2014 and scheduled to complete in September this year but due to unforeseen circumstances it only started two months later.

"The contractor assured that they should be able to catch up and meet the scheduled completion date but if not the Public Works Department (JKR) is prepared to grant two months extension to replace the period taken up by the late start," he added.

Improvement to the existing sport complex, costing RM3.08 million, involves commissioning of a synthetic running track, football field and upgrading of the grandstand.

State Legislative Assembly deputy speaker and Tarat assemblyman Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Kedup assemblyman Martin Ben and Balai Ringin assemblyman Snowdan Lawan were among those at the news conference.
