KUCHING: It was a delightful moment when Sarawak was announced as third place winner at the 'Magic of the Night 2014' by Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Muhamed Nazri Abdul Aziz in Putrajaya yesterday.

'Magic of the Night' is an annual event organised by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture for the past five years where lit floating designs featuring the uniqueness of tourism attractions in Malaysia are showcased.

Sarawak and all other states in Malaysia take part in this event as an effort to promote Malaysia to international tourists.

The Ministry of Tourism in a press statement said that Sarawak's participation in the event was in line with Visit Sarawak Year 2014, which also served as another platform to expose and increase awareness of Sarawak's tourism events such as the Sarawak Regatta, Rainforest World Music Festival, Pesta Benak, Pesta Kaul and many others.

Meanwhile, in order to increase the number of visitors to all tourism events organised in Sarawak, the ministry also called on event organisers to submit their events to the ministry so that they can be included in its Calendar of Events.

KUCHING: China will strengthen its investment and economic cooperation with Sarawak, particularly in infrastructure development, industry, agriculture and education.

China Ambassador to Malaysia, Huang Huikang, said currently economic cooperation between China and Sarawak were mainly in project contracts, and many Chinese companies were
involved in areas such as infrastructure development and plantation.

"We wish to bring benefits to the people of Sarawak and strengthen our friendship and cooperation between our two countries," he told reporters after paying a courtesy call on Second
Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh at his office here yesterday.

Huang, who was accompanied by China Consul-General in Kuching, Liu Quan, and his
deputy Liu Dongyuan held a closed-door discussion with Wong, who is also Minister of Local Government and Community Development.

When asked on the issues discussed, Huang said: "We discussed friendship between China and Sarawak, and also between our two countries. We are confident of greater development in terms of
friendship and cooperation."

He said China was very happy with the progress made with Malaysia in the last 40 years, adding, "we are going to have a new journey for better understanding and close cooperation (with Malaysia) for the next 40 years."

Huang also paid courtesy calls on Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem.

"I'm very glad that I had the chance to visit your beautiful state. Even though this visit is short (less than three days), the impression is very profound."

Sarawak force Pahang to a draw - The Borneo Post Online

KUCHING: Sarawak snatched a 1-1 draw with Super League title contender Pahang at Stadium Negeri on Tuesday.

The Crocs came from behind to draw level thanks to a Joseph Kallang Tie equaliser. Their spirited challenge pleased head coach Robert Alberts.

"The players have shown great fighting spirit against Pahang and they did well to force a draw against Pahang. I am proud of them," he said.

"Pahang were a good side as they were well-organised. We did everything to win but I guess the draw is fitting enough of a result for us."

Despite the draw, Sarawak looked the happier side as Pahang are in a three-way battle with Johor DT and Selangor for the league championship.

Nevertheless, there is cause for concern as Sarawak will face their last two matches of the season with a depleted squad.

Striker Muamer Salibasic will have his knees scanned before the next match while Ryan Griffiths has to serve suspension after collecting his fourth yellow card.

Ronny Harun is also doubtful as he is still in Sabah to settle family matters.

Then there are injuries to key players like Mohd Lot Abu Hassan, Gabor Gyepes and Hassan Al Mohamed.

The Crocs will next take on Selangor at the Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday.

"We will have to put whatever we have to good use when we take on the Red Giants this Saturday. We have our plans," Alberts assured.

Posted: 20 Jun 2014 09:34 AM PDT

SIBU: Sarawak had secured two gold medals in the on-going annual Malaysia Maksak Athletics Championship held at Bukit Jalil Sports Stadium.

Former state javelin thrower Lau Sie Long bagged the gold medal in the men's javelin with his throw of 59.35m while Sabduyah Baki won the other gold in the veteran ladies' 100m sprint.

Lau, from Sibu, and representing Sarawak Maksak, was happy with his performance, saying the distance of 59.35m was his personal best.

"I am satisfied with the result and relieved to have helped the state to win a gold medal at the Maksak championship," he said when contacted.

ATM's Muhd Ruzaini Subki was second with a throw of 55.70m, followed by Perlis' Mumamad Akmal Zain with 54.46m and Prison's Department Shahrul Anuar Yahya with 51.72m.

A staff of Sibu Sports Council, Lau had been pumping in efforts to improve his throw.

His immediate target was to break the 60m barrier.

"In fact, I achieved a breakthrough during the first try of my throw at the championship when I touched the 61m mark. Unfortunately, that was just a try and not counted."

Lau tried hard in his next six throws and the best was the 59.35m he successfully achieved in his first throw.

Lau, the 2011 Sabah Open and 2013 Sibu Open javelin champion, also pledged to come back stronger next year.

He had been pumping in serious efforts to improve his throw, putting in several hours of practice daily.
