Vital to have National Water Safety Council — Lam Thye Posted: 09 Jul 2014 12:37 AM PDT by Peter Boon, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on July 9, 2014, Wednesday SIBU: The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) and Life Saving Society of Malaysia (LSSM) are pushing for the establishment of a National Water Safety Council (NWSC) in the country. Niosh chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, in disclosing this yesterday, stressed that it was imperative that such council be set up due to the increasing number of deaths by drowning. "According to statistics from the Fire and Rescue Services Department (Bomba) as reported in the newspaper, there were about 330 deaths by drowning in 2013. "For the first two months of this year, 67 deaths (by drowning) were reported. "This speaks volumes of the urgency to form a National Water Safety Council to reduce incidents of drowning in Malaysia and promote a water safety culture for Malaysians. "LSSM and Niosh are now trying to push the government to set up the proposed council," Lee told The Borneo Post. He noted drowning cases were quite rampant in the Peninsula, especially involving young people such as students. He reasoned if the council was formed, it could act as a national body of relevant government agencies, ministries, NGOs and other stakeholders to discuss means and ways to create awareness among the people of the dangers of drowning and what need to be done by authorities to reduce the number of drowning cases. "So the purpose of having the National Water Safety Council is to involve stakeholders to concertedly undertake measures to formulate national policies for the purpose of helping to reduce deaths by drowning," he explained, saying without the council, the matter had been tackled in a haphazard He also revealed that LSSM had trained about 50,000 young swimmers and life savers. Lee was asked to comment on water safety measures following the death of two schoolmates by drowning in a pond near the police station in Sibu Jaya housing estate last month. Lee further revealed that he would be meeting up with the Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan probably sometime this week to discuss their proposal to set up the council. "We want the government to understand that it is important for it to view the matter with utmost concern," he said. |

16-year-olds cannot take theory test for Class D licence starting July 14 Posted: 08 Jul 2014 11:48 PM PDT by Lian Cheng, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on July 9, 2014, Wednesday KUCHING: Sixteen-year-olds are not allowed to sit the theory test for Class D licence under the New Driver's Education Curriculum (KPP Baru) which will take effect on July 14. Currently, they are allowed to take the theory test when they are 16 years old. Other changes under the new rule include a new version of questions and answers for the theory test. Eric Chai, a committee member of Malaysia Driving Institute Association (Pima) told The Borneo Now, one gets a driving licence involving three parts — A, B and C. Part A is a theory test on driving rules and regulations. Part B is driving test involving practical components of a slope stop, a three-point turn, and side parking whereas Part C is on-the-road testing. "The letter said the KPP Baru, however, has two new elements — Z-course and S-course apart from Part B," said Chai. Meanwhile, state Road Transport Department (JPJ) public relations officer Rogie Saui said for the time being, the state JPJ had yet to have full details on the new regulations. "We will be briefed on the subject on Thursday (July 10)," he added. Rogie said he was uncertain about the effective date of the implementation of KPP Baru but only said it would be very soon. "The new curriculum is introduced because JPJ needs to improve its driving test from time-to-time to ensure it keeps up with the new generation of drivers as well as the latest development in the car industry," said Rogie. He said the curriculum aimed to increase safety awareness among the learner drivers. "It will also emphasise improved driving skills to reduce accident cases especially that cause injuries and deaths." On the new driver's licence, he said it was available to the public in middle of last year at JPJ headquarters at Mile 13 Kuching-Serian road. "They were only available in post offices in June this year," said Rogie, adding that the new driver's licence was a product of higher quality and security. |
