Sarawak coach says Super League match against rock-bottom club will be no easy task

KUCHING: T-Team will be looking to avenge a 6-1 thrashing by Sarawak in a Malaysia Cup match on Sept 4, 2012 at Stadium Negeri when they take on the Crocs in a Super League fixture at Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium tonight.

Looking back at the last four previous encounters between the two teams, T-Team seems to have a slight upper hand as they have won two, drawn once and lost once against Sarawak.

Both teams had not played each other in the 2013 season as Sarawak were playing in the Premier League after being relegated at the end of 2012 season and both teams having avoided each in the FA Cup and Malaysia Cup competition that year.

But it is Sarawak who are looking on track with their Super League campaign as they currently occupy third place in the Super League standings with nine points while T-Team sit dangerously rock bottom at 12th spot with four points after five matches.

Despite the statistics, Sarawak head coach Robert Alberts however insisted that the Crocs are facing a different team tonight and that the record does not bother him or the team at all.

"It has been quite a while that we haven't faced T-Team and they have changed a lot. Whatever it is, there is no way that this assignment will be an easy one," he admitted.

He stated his case as the team was impressive during their season opener having defeated hot favourites for the Super League title, JDT 1-0 at home.

Alberts was speaking to The Borneo Post during the Crocs' training session at the Stadium Negeri, just before travelling off to Peninsular Malaysia in the evening.

Coached by Albert's former assistant Mohd Azraai Khor, the T-Team often mixes it around a little bit in their attacking style this season although they attack primarily through the flanks.

To stop T-Team, Sarawak must hence do whatever it takes to cut off the ball supply to their attackers if they were to come away victors in Kuala Terengganu tonight.

"If they were given enough comfort to play their game, they will pose a serious threat to us. I think we can go home with the three points if we can disrupt their rhythm and style of play," said Alberts.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 8.45pm.

FAM allows two senior state players to turn out for President Cup

Posted: 07 Mar 2014 08:54 PM PST

KUALA LUMPUR: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has allowed two senior players from state teams to play in the under-21 President Cup preliminary round.

FAM vice-president, Datuk Afandi Hamzah said the decision would be effective immediately to give opportunities to the senior players who were not fielded in Malaysian League matches.

"We have considered various aspects when we found there were two senior players not featured in Malaysia League matches.

"Nonetheless, the senior players would have to adhere to the period set in the circular for the President Cup competition," he told reporters after chairing FAM's Local Competitions Committee meeting at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya here.

In another development, Afandi said the second registration window for local players for the FAM League would be from March 23 to April 21 while the window for imported players will be from March 23 to April 19.

"Three local players from any team can be registered according to the regulations. For import players, each squad can register up to four players," he said. — Bernama

Coaches must possess necessary qualification, says Lee

Posted: 07 Mar 2014 08:54 PM PST

MIRI: Assistant Minister of Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin yesterday reminded coaches that they must have necessary qualification before coaching.

Addressing coaches at the closing of Sports Science Level 1 course held here, Lee said; "It is very important for coaches to get necessary qualification as it is already mandatory for them if they were to coach in the schools and other training centres."

Lee said coaches are not only encouraged to have sports science knowledge, but should also attend sports management courses, referee courses and first aid among others.

"The Sarawak State Sports Council is committed to organise these courses annually to help our coaches to have the latest knowledge in the field of sports development and continuing coaching education," he added.

Lee urged the sports associations to organise their specific Level 1 courses so that their coaches will be well trained and qualified to produce more champions for Sarawak.

"As Sarawak has been given the task to host Sukma in 2016, we require a huge amount of manpower and technical expertise in the respective sports," he added.

Pointing out that knowledge of sports science should not be the sole responsibility of the coaches, Lee said athletes, sports association committees, sports coordinators, gym and fitness instructors and school teachers are all encouraged to attend sports science courses. A total of 41 participants comprising of coaches from various sport organisations, bodies and teachers attended the Sports Science Level 1 course.

Yeung gets six years’ jail for money laundering

Posted: 07 Mar 2014 08:53 PM PST

HONG KONG: Birmingham City owner Carson Yeung was jailed for six years for money laundering yesterday, after a Hong Kong trial that put the mysterious fortune of the hairdresser-turned-businessman under intense scrutiny.

Judge Douglas Yau said the sentence sent a strong message against white-collar crime in the southern Chinese city, following the 54-year-old's conviction on five charges of laundering HK$720 million (US$93 million).

The high-profile trial gripped the semi-autonomous region and fans of the British football club alike with its tales of unexplained dealings and financial transactions involving local businessmen and an alleged triad member.

"The sentence must include an element of deterrence to discourage those who are in a position to exploit the system," Yau told a courtroom packed with reporters. "Maintaining the integrity of the banking system is of paramount importance if Hong Kong is to remain an international finance centre," he added. "The law will come down on them with full force."

Yeung was arrested and charged with ill-gotten gains in the southern Chinese city in June 2011, two years after he acquired the "Blues". He was found guilty on Monday.

The court heard how the former hairdresser had a business relationship with Cheung Chi-tai, who the judge said was the leader of the Hong Kong Wo Hop To triad group, citing an expert's report.

Yeung made large investments in the Macau gambling industry, investing millions into shares of a gambling company backed by Cheung and another Hong Kong tycoon, the court heard.

"I find that without his considerable skill in share dealings and connections to the Macau casinos, the laundering could not have gone on for such a long time and on such a large scale," Yau said of Yeung.

Hong Kong police investigator Gloria Yu said outside court that she was "happy" with the outcome of the case, which started in 2008.

In their mitigation bid, Yeung's lawyers pleaded for leniency Friday, saying that the total amount laundered was only HK$449.01 million, claiming double counting.

Lead defence lawyer Graham Harris told the judge that Yeung, who built a business empire that included hair salons and real estate, "came from rags to riches, and he's likely to return to rags".

Throughout the trial, Yeung and the prosecution painted differing pictures of how the former hairdresser amassed his fortune.

The prosecution successfully argued during the trial that the HK$720 million that passed through the five accounts had come from "unknown parties without any apparent reason".

The sum, they said, was "more than 300 times the total combined salary" of Yeung and his father.

Yeung had insisted unsuccessfully that he accumulated his hundreds of millions of dollars through stock trading, upmarket hair salons, business ventures in mainland China and investing in casinos in Macau.

Little known prior to his emergence in English football, Yeung took control of Birmingham City in 2009 in an 81-million pound ($130 million) takeover from David Sullivan and David Gold, now the co-owners of West Ham.

Yeung resigned as chairman of Birmingham International Holdings, the parent company of the English club in February but remains the leading shareholder.

The city's court will hold a hearing next month to determine which of Yeung's assets will be seized for the conviction.

It remains to be seen whether Yeung will appeal. — AFP
