KUCHING: The Sarawak Progressive Democratic Part (SPDP) has officially reinstated four of the former leaders from what was dubbed the Group of Five (G5), putting an end to a protracted rivalry which indirectly affected Barisan Nasional (BN) solidarity over the last few years.

SPDP former senior vice president Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie and three other assemblymen namely Datuk Sylvester Entri Muran (Marudi), Rosey Yunus (Bekenu) and Paulus Palu Gumbang (Batu Danau) received their certificates of reinstatement after reapplying to join the party.

Before their sacking from SPDP in January 2012, Entri's and Rosey's last posts were vice-president while Paulus, information chief.

The fifth member of G5, former Mas Gading MP Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe was not reinstated, having contested as an independent against Barisan Nasional candidate, SPDP new face Anthony Nogeh Gumbek in the May 2013 general election.

The four elected representatives were officially reinstated as ordinary members in a ceremony held at Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem's office earlier today. Also present were SPDP president Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom and supreme council members.

Sarawak will give full support to Perlis - The Borneo Post Online

Posted: 14 Mar 2014 09:53 AM PDT

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Perlis can count on Sarawak in terms of support and cooperation for the success of Sukma XVII from May 24 to June 4.

Assistant Sports Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin assured that Sarawak, as usual, will render its fullest support to the host state and at the coming Sukan Malaysia (Sukma), Perlis can expect the same.

"We have been preparing our athletes to compete in the meet. We may not be able to take part in all the events but I can say that we will be sending quite a big contingent to Perlis," he said.

Lee, also the Assistant Communications Minister, disclosed this in his speech at the presentation of prizes to winners of the Sukma XVII Perlis 2014 Golf Challenge semi-final stage at the Samarahan Country Club near here yesterday.

"Don't worry, Perlis. Sarawak will be there to support and in return we hope Perlis will also do the same to us when we host the 19th Sukma in 2016," he said in a jest.

Lee said by right all parties should give their full support to make the national meet a great success because it was one of the venues and platforms to scout and also to polish young talents in sports.

"It was through Sukma that we have produced a few athletes who have competed at the international level such as in the Olympics and Commonwealth Games.

"At the last Olympics in London, we also sent a contingent where our athletes managed to bring back a silver (through Datuk Lee Chong Wei) and one bronze (Pandelela Rinong) medals. Thus far, we have done quite well except that we have not won any gold medal in the Olympics just yet," he asserted.

At the local level, Lee praised the 70 golfers from the various golf clubs throughout the state for their participation in the Sukma XVII Perlis 2014 Golf Challenge semi-final stage yesterday.

He was pleased with the response from the locals although the competition was not more than just to promote and to introduce Perlis as the host for Sukma XVII.

"This is the kind of spirit that we want because it is through sports that we can interact with one another and at the same time build networking among us," he said.

Meanwhile, the champions from each of the six categories competed yesterday have qualified for the grand finals to be held in Perlis on May 11.

They are Johari Aman (Gross 0-12 handicap), Donny Inam (Gross 13-18 handicap), Tom Lanau (Gross 19-25 handicap), Abd Rahman Monsor (Nett 0-12 handicap), Dr Simon Sinang (Nett 13-18 handicap) and Augustine Lee Chee Min (Nett 19-25 handicap).

Also present at the ceremony yesterday was a four-member delegation from Sukma XVII Perlis 2014 secretariat which was headed by Perlis State Legislative Assembly speaker Hamdan Bahari and Exco member Sabry Ahmad.

ALOR SETAR: A nine-month-old baby, who was blistered all over his body, allegedly due to an allergy from a medicine prescribed by a private clinic here died yesterday.

SIBU: Foreign investors see Sarawak as a favourite place for investments with its good facilities and infrastructure, Assistant Minister of Industrial Development (Investment and Promotion) Datuk Julaihi Narawi said yesterday.

"To them, the state has a conducive business environment," he said, naming Samalaju Industrial Park and the Halal Hub in Tanjong Manis as among investors' attractions.

"The Halal Hub is where we encourage the development of food-based industries. I've been made to understand investors from China have made visits to Tanjung Manis and before this, Japanese investors had been there.

"I hope it can become one of the places where foreign investors can consider investing in the food industry. Elsewhere, in Kuching, we have the Sama Jaya, where it is an electronic-based industry.

"We also have Demak Laut Industrial Estate and Samarahan Industrial Estate. Hence, many opportunities are open to local investors apart from encouraging foreign investment. We have good facilities and provide a conducive environment to investors," he told reporters.

Julaihi, who is Sebuyau assemblyman, was met after visiting Golden Lung Birdnest Centre here yesterday.

He was accompanied by Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee, political secretary to the chief minister and Jomoreng assemblyman Abu Seman Jahwie and Daro assemblyman Murni Suhaili.

"Samalaju Industrial Park is what it is today, and speaks volumes on foreign investors' confidence in Sarawak," he enthused.

On energy supply, he said energy intensive industries need to discuss with SEB where the state has Bakun and Murum dams.

Meanwhile, he praised the managing director of Golden Lung Birdnest Centre Robert Wong Ming Ging for being creative and innovative in coming out with new products.

He noted that Wong had creatively devised his own technology for his products.

Julaihi said the ministry always encouraged the development of small medium industries (SMI), adding that easy financing could be obtained from local banks.

Meanwhile, besides making 'Dim Sum', Wong is also involved in other products like his birdnest line.
