New Sabah MCA committee to work closely with Musa

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 09:13 AM PST

KOTA KINABALU: The newly elected Sabah MCA committee voiced their support for the present leadership under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Hj Aman and pledged to work closely within the context of the Barisan Nasional (BN).

Chairman Wilfred Yong said the new state MCA liaison committee would lend their support to Musa who is also the Sabah BN chief.

"We will continue to work closely within the coalition and strive to regain the confidence of the people," he said when he led the new committee to pay a courtesy call on Musa here yesterday.

He also hoped the state leadership would consider giving some of the party's committee members relevant platforms within the government to represent the voice of its members.

Meanwhile, Musa said as Sabah BN chairman he would continue to work hand in hand with MCA as it is part of the BN coalition.

"From the very beginning, I have acknowledged and appreciated the role contributed by the Chinese community," he said.

He said this was clearly demonstrated by the state government's commitment to continue giving aid to Chinese independent schools and temples as well as Chinese non-governmental organisations.

"We know that the Chinese communities want a climate where there are ample business opportunities, a good education system and security," he said.

As such, he said the BN government would strive to provide such an environment for all Malaysians regardless of ethnicity, culture and beliefs.

Among those present were former Sabah MCA chief Datuk Edward Khoo who is the party's new permanent honorary advisor, State liaison advisor Datuk Paul Kong, Sabah MCA Wanita chief Datuk Agnes Shim and Youth chief Lee Yin Chung.

He said this was in accordance with the situation of the district with its diverse cultural society which is able to attract more tourists to the interior.

"I welcome the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Infrastructure Development Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan's proposal to make Keningau as the host in the launching of the state-level Kaamatan Festival this year," he said at a dinner with family members and local community leaders at Perkasa Hotel here on Saturday.

Musa will also invite Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak to officiate the Bandukan Concrete Bridge in Bingkor, in June.

He said if all went well as planned, it would be history and the pride of the community here where the Bandukan Bridge would become famous in the interior.

He also expressed his joy at being here to be able to meet with family members and relatives as well as friends.

According to Musa, Keningau is his home town.

"This is our culture in the state, to give priority to the spirit of friendship, family, goodwill and peace, and I hope that mutual respect for each other will remain strong.

"The state is already well known in this country for its unique society comprising of various races and religions, and can live together harmoniously as one big family. This is the spirit of 1Malaysia which is special to us in this state," he said.

Six business premises in Keningau face action

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 09:11 AM PST

KENINGAU: Traders can be fined up to RM100,000 or face imprisonment not exceeding three years for committing offences under the Price Control, Anti-Rationing and Retail Pricing Designation 1993.

Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Keningau branch enforcement officer, A Runji Abdul Hamid, said this yesterday during an operation under "Ops Prices" at business premises at Adika Commercial Complex here.

He said action had been taken against six business premises here for committing offences under the Price Control, Anti-Rationing and Retail Pricing Designation 1993.

He said traders found committing an offence could be fined up to RM100,000 or imprisoned not exceeding three years, or both, and fined not more than RM500,000 for business premises.

"They may also be compounded by 50 per cent of the fine imposed," he said.

On the operation, Runji said it was carried out to prevent traders from increasing prices of goods indiscriminately.

He said 12 enforcement officers from the ministry were involved in the operation.

Runji advised traders here to avoid hiking up prices and rationing of goods because doing so would result in extreme profiteering.

DAP hopes eco-city not used to revive dam project

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 09:11 AM PST

KOTA KINABALU: DAP Sabah is hoping the proposed Gaur Eco-City to be constructed in Kadamaian will not be used to quietly revive the Tambatuon Dam project.

According to DAP Sabah secretary Dr Edwin Bosi, Malaysia's first eco-city called Gaur Eco-City in Kadamaian in Kota Belud is not surprising since the government has decided not to go ahead with the Tambatuon dam.

The Guar Eco-city which is expected to cost RM15 billion, is designed to affect more than 5,000 acres of undulating land and 20 villages along the foothills of Mount Kinabalu, he said, adding that facilities such cable cars, monorails and integrated transport around a man-made lake with an ambiance of Venice, dotted with hotels, housing, hospital and a golf course are similar to that aired when justifying for the Tambatuon dam.

The other facilities that have been reported are the F1 standard motor race track, three universities, sports city, education hub and business hub.

"I am a little skeptical of such gigantic development in Kadamaian when even our basic infrastructure, road and electricity are in such a sorry state. While such development is viewed positively, the rakyat, especially in Tambatuon, hope that this project is not a 'backdoor' to revive the Tambatuon dam.

"Is there a connection between the Tambatuon Dam and Gaur Eco-city? We remember that the government failed to undertake an environmental impact assessment or EIA for the Tambatuon Dam," he said.

Dr Edwin said from what was reported in the press, a feasibility study would be launched on February 18 and if all went well, the tendering of works was expected to be called by April and it would be up and running by the fifth year of construction.

"The question is how could an EIA for a development undertaking of this size be completed in three months? I sincerely hope that Enviro Enhance Sdn Bhd, the consultant firm for Gaur Eco-City, would be transparent on the EIA report. The transparency of the company will go a long way to get the support of everyone in Sabah," he said.

LDP sec-gen regrets certain quarters continue to mislead members

Posted: 13 Jan 2014 09:10 AM PST

KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) secretary general Ir Yong Wui Chung yesterday regretted certain quarters who continued to mislead and confuse the party's members and the public even after the Registrar of Societies (ROS) had endorsed Datuk Teo Chee Kang as president and the new leadership line-up of the party.

Yong said the contents of the letter to LDP, dated January 2, 2014, had been made public in a press conference held at the party headquarters on January 5, 2014.

Some reporters even took close-up photographs of the letter, he pointed out.

"In fact, we have been informed that the ROS had replied Datuk Liew Vui Keong's lawyer's letter reiterating their findings and decision as per their letter to us dated January 2, 2014. It is mind-boggling as to why they still queried the authenticity of the said letter," Yong said.

He said the original letter signed by the ROS director general is in his custody.

"Any party members who wish for an inspection may forward their request to the party headquarters. There is absolutely nothing to hide," he added.

"We have also extracted a Form 9 duly certified by the ROS confirming the new line-up of the Supreme Council with Datuk Teo Chee Kang as the party president. They should know that they can also do likewise," Yong said.
