War on tobacco is futile, smokers still smoke

Posted: 31 May 2014 10:25 AM PDT

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Despite the enforcement of the Tobacco Control Order, there are still a number of people who continue to ignore the negative impact it has on human health, Brudirect reported.

These are people who fail to realise the damaging consequences of smoking, based on scientific findings, not only on their own health but also those around them including close family members, classified as second-hand smokers.

Other efforts in raising greater awareness is by banning tobacco advertisements, controlling on tobacco products and sale, publishing health warning on cigarette wrapper, smoking-prohibition in public premises and inside certain types of vehicles, and continuous campaign on health-risk awareness.

The Minister of Health, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Adanan Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Hj Md Yusof voiced out his concerns in conjunction with the World No Tobacco Day 2014. Yang Berhormat Pehin said that tobacco-consumption has been scientifically proven to cause cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and chronic respiratory problem. These non-communicable diseases are the main contributor of deaths around the world, including in the Sultanate.

The Health Minister added, second-hand smokers are also exposed to the cardiovascular disease and breathing problem, coronary disease and lung cancer. Lung cancer has been proven among tobacco smokers.

Around seventy-percent of adenocarcinoma cancer patients in Brunei are non-smokers who have been exposed to tobacco smoke over a long period of time. The contributing factor to the problem is their close family members who are ardent smokers. Meanwhile, expecting mothers who are exposed to tobacco smoke are at greater risk of giving birth to premature and under-weight baby.

The Ministry of Health reiterated call on smokers to quit the habit of smoking for the sake of their own health and the health of their beloved family. Yang Berhormat Pehin said his ministry is always supportive of such endeavour, and gives assistance through the Quit-Smoking Clinic.

Members of the public are also hoped to cooperate with the authority by reporting any tobacco-smuggling activity and other law-breaking actions toward eradiating tobacco consumption in the country.
