Jelani denies applying to join PBRS

Posted: 08 Jun 2014 03:50 PM PDT

KOTA KINABALU: Matunggong assemblyman Datuk Jelani Hamdan has denied that he had applied to join Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) as claimed by Parti Bersatu Sabah Secretary General (PBS) Datuk Johnny Mositun.

Jelani, formerly a Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) member, said that he still maintains his status as a BN-friendly independent state assemblyman.

"I have not made any decisions to join any BN component parties but there is a possibility that I will choose a platform that I feel is suitable to be used in serving my constituents," Jelani said when contacted yesterday.

He was commenting on the newspaper report quoting Mositun's response to MCA's acceptance of Luyang assemblyman Dr Hiew King Cheu's membership application. Mositun said that another BN component party had put on hold the applications from Hiew and two other state assemblymen, Datuk Jelani Hamdan and Jeremy Malajad of PKR, based on the BN principle of consensus.

Jelani added that if needed by BN, he is ready to join any one of its component parties and if not then he will find a suitable platform that conforms to what he is doing for the people of Sabah.

MCA taking in Dr Hiew unethical, says Pairin

Posted: 08 Jun 2014 03:47 PM PDT

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan has called on the Barisan Nasional (BN) to ensure that the principle of consensus decision making is rigorously maintained.

If this is not done, Pairin said, he fear that it could cause the BN to break up as the consensus principle is what strengthens and bonds the coalition.

"That is very crucial (and) very important because this consensual decision brings about a feeling of sincerity, respectability and commitment which strengthens and bonds the BN together. Now, if that were to be destroyed, then it is not going to be the same and will lead to the break-up of BN because it will allow a free-for-all situation," Pairin stressed.

He said this when met at the PBS Inanam annual general meeting which was held at Dewan Menggatal near here yesterday.

He was asked to comment on the issue of Luyang assemblyman Dr Hiew King Cheu joining BN through MCA, which party president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai reportedly said had the blessings of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Musa Aman

To a question as to whether MCA's decision to accept Dr Hiew had the consensus of BN component parties, Pairin, in his response, replied: "It is very obvious that it was not done with the consensus of the other component parties. PBS  secretary general Datuk Johnny Mositun has already made his statement to explain that there ought to be a consensus because that is the principle right from before."

‘Youth perception, knowledge must be developed to prevent spread of false info on esszone’

Posted: 08 Jun 2014 03:35 PM PDT

TAWAU: Youth perception and knowledge on the security aspects in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone) need to be developed based on facts to prevent them from making provocations and disseminating false information that can cause confusion and untoward reactions.

When making the statement, Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) director-general Datuk Mohammad Mentek said this was vital since youths made up two thirds of the country's population, or numbered around 12.5 million, and were always hungry for change.

"At the same time, they are not spared from all the challenges which come with development.

"Those who are weak will lost their vision, especially with the various kinds of information that can easily be found in the social media," he said in his opening speech at the Tawau-level Youth Community-ESSCom Programme launched by State Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan in Kampung Batu Payung near here yesterday.

Also present were Tawau Municipal Council president Datuk Ismail Mayakob and Sabah Chief Minister's Political Secretary Tuan Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan.

Meanwhile, Mohammad said he believed that through the programme, youths would be able to get a clearer picture on the country's security aspects and to get better understandings on the roles played by ESSCom.

As such, he said it was hoped that more youth associations in the state, especially in the ESSZone area, to come forward and work closely with ESSCom to organise similar programmes that would benefit the young people.

ESSCom was established on April 1, 2013 following the militant intrusion tragedy in Lahad Datu. It comprises four components – Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) and public agencies – entrusted to protect Sabah's sovereignty and maintain security at ESSZZone.

The ESSZone comprises 10 districts stretching a total of 1,733.7km from Kudat to Tawau, and the districts involved are Kudat, Kota Marudu, Pitas, Beluran, Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Kunak, Semporna, and Tawau. — Bernama

KK mayor: Beach and park won’t be taken away from public

Posted: 08 Jun 2014 03:27 PM PDT

KOTA KINABALU: Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir reassured that the Tanjung Aru Beach and Prince Philip Park will not be taken away from the public.

He said the state government had clearly stated that the Tanjung Aru Beach is not for sale, as it is the heritage of the people of Sabah and will always be open to the public.

This is also reflected in the draft plan which includes the condition "open and recreational space" as part of the land use of the Tanjung Aru area.

According to him, the top priority of the proposed Tanjung Aru Eco Development (TAED) Masterplan is to rehabilitate and revive the beach and park.

He added that while the "Hotel and Resort" zoning is also indicated as the main land use permitted in the area, it does not mean the area is exclusively for hotels and resorts only.

He reiterated that the public will always be able to access, use and enjoy the beach and park.

On the zoning of the Tanjung Aru area, the mayor said it reflects the integrated nature of the TAED project, which consists of the following:-

-             Reviving and, more importantly, expanding both Tanjung Aru beach and Prince Philip Park.

-             Re-development of adjacent government land.

-             The master developer Tanjung Aru Eco Development Sdn Bhd (TAEDSB) is 100 per cent-owned by the state government, and is not a private developer.

By integrating the beach and park revival project into a wider re-development project, TAED can finance the rehabilitation and expansion of the beach and park through the re-development of the adjacent land.

The Tanjung Aru beach has been badly eroded by decades of wave action and strong currents of the South China Sea over the years and the erosion is now damaging the park as well.

Hence, the mayor said to restore Tanjung Aru beach to its glory of four or five decades ago it needs big ideas and comprehensive solutions.

He added that they would always ensure the public interest is represented and considered while balancing the need to manage development and encourage economic growth.

Madingkir also said that the Second Public Consultation on the Final Draft KK Local Plan which ended on June 6 has received strong interests from the public.

He thanked the public and those who have come forward to submit their comments, saying that their inputs are crucial in producing the Kota Kinabalu Local Plan 2020.

With the completion of the public consultation on the final draft plan, he explained that Kota Kinabalu City Hall (KKCH) is nearing the end of the process to producing its Kota Kinabalu Local Plan 2020 that started in 2002.

Madingkir said the planning document is to guide the transformation of Kota Kinabalu City into a Nature Resort and Maritime City by 2030.

From July to September this year, KKCH will schedule hearings to consider objections put forth during the Second Public Consultation on KKLP 2020.

The mayor said that KKCH values and will consider all the comments and feedback they have received on the Draft Local Plan.
