Team manager Mohamad Yusnar Matalie said although the team failed to achieve its four-gold target, the result was better than the one gold medal they won at Sukma XV in Pahang two years ago. "They will have to train harder to improve themselves and about half of the team members are still eligible for Sukma 2016 in Sarawak and by then they should be very matured for the challenge," he said. In squash, Sarawak edged Penang 2-1 to top Group A with eight points and will face Kelantan in the semi-finals. Sanjay Singh Chal suffered discomfort on his ankle and lost 2-3 to Ryan Neville Pasqual in the first singles but Jess Tay and Marcus Sim managed to pull Sarawak back win 3-0 and 3-1 wins over Heng Kai Heng and Muhammad Ezzri Nazri in the second and third singles. 'Effective communication vital in understanding individuals ... Posted: 28 May 2014 12:28 PM PDT by Anasathia Jenis, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on May 29, 2014, Thursday KUCHING: Effective communication is important in understanding individuals and circumstances, says Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah. She also said such communication would enable one to acknowledge and appreciate differences in a multiracial society. "We must be able to articulate and communicate our message and aspiration in a very clear and compelling manner so that it will inspire people to act, and promote a clear sense of purpose and urgency," she said at the launch of the ninth Language For Specific Purposes seminar (LSP) and the sixth Global Advances in Business Communication conference (GABC) 2014 here Tuesday evening. The three-day event with the theme 'Language, Society and Practices-Getting Along by Communicating' is being hosted by The Language Academy of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and GABC. It is first time held here. Also present at the launch were chairman of UTM LSP 2014 Dr Adlina Abdul Samad and chairman for UTM GABC 2014 Associate Professor Dr Hadina Habil as well as the Language Academy dean Associate Professor Dr Noor Abidah Mohd Omar. Fatimah, who was representing Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem further said that effective communication among professionals would lead them to a work together. "We must be aware that we are not only required to handle vast quantities of information but also to disseminate those that are proven reliable and useful." "Effective communication is more than just exchanging informations it is also about understanding the values and the socio- cultural context behind the information. "It enables you to communicate even complex or difficult concepts or messages without crating mistrust, prejudice, misunderstanding or conflict," she added. Hadina also spoke. She hoped the conference would be able to produce more publications in the areas of LSP and Business Communication. "Language Academy has its in-house journal (ESP Malaysia) published by UTM Press which will be rebranded as LSP International Journal. The journal is available online. Efforts have been made to have the journal indexed in Scopud." "Similarly, the GABC conference has its own GABC journal which is also available online. "The publications in these two journals will be the contributions from this conference," she said adding that the conference gathered academics, professionals, students and other parties who want to share and offer their knowledge and expertise with each other. |
All set for Sarawak's challenge at 2014 Sukma – BorneoPost Online ... Posted: 22 May 2014 10:39 AM PDT by Ting Tieng Hee, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on May 23, 2014, Friday KUCHING: The Sarawak contingent are all fired up and set to mount a serious challenge at the Malaysia Games XVII (Sukma) in Perlis starting today until June 4. Represented by 362 athletes accompanied by 158 officials, Sarawak will compete in 22 out of 24 sports and go all out to capture a fair share of the 310 gold medals out of the 396 on offer. The state contingent are skipping equestrian and optimist sailing for these 2014 games. "The athletes are all raring to go after so many months of preparation and anticipation," said chef de mission Datuk Lee Kim Shin yesterday. Lee, also the Assistant Minister of Sports and Communications, said the preparation was completed with the contingent camp that ended at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak yesterday. "Yes, we are now ready for the tough challenge ahead and some of the athletes are already in Perlis. "Some of them especially the football and pencak silat squads had left and others are joining the state contingent in Perlis from Bukit Jalil while the foreign-based athletes will be travelling straight to Perlis," he said. The target for Sarawak is 55 golds in order to finish among the top five teams and Lee is confident that it is achievable. "Based on the feedback from our coaches and sports associations' officials, we are predicting a 55-gold medal haul and anything beyond that will be a big bonus," he added. Lee said Sarawak will especially be banking on sports such as athletics, swimming, tenpin bowling, wushu, tennis, weightlifting, cycling and archery to deliver the goods. "I am also expecting the other sports to spring a few surprises." His main concern will be the judging in the subjective sports like wushu, silat, karate and taekwondo as judging in these martial arts sports can be controversial. "Through our past experience, it is really hard for us to predict how well we can perform in those sports," he said. With the majority of the athletes being new faces, Lee continued, Sukma XVII will serve as a prelude to Sukma 2016 which Sarawak will play host. "Perlis Sukma is also a very good platform for us to gain experience and I believe that, by 2016, the majority of the athletes will be matured and experienced to pose a strong challenge for the overall championship." Sarawak's first medals are expected to come from pencak silat which commences today at the Perlis Sports Complex's Hall Sports Partnership and the football competition will also kick off today at UiTM Perlis, Arau Repository, Pauh. The sports starting tomorrow are cycling, men's and women's hockey, squash, canoeing and karate, followed by lawn bowls and tenpin bowling on Sunday and badminton, boxing, weightlifting, sepak takraw and tennis next Tuesday. At Sukma XV in Pahang two years ago, Sarawak captured 42 gold, 32 silver and 38 bronze medals to finish in fourth position overall after Terengganu, Selangor and Pahang. |
