Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said followers of Islam should take the opportunity to do more charity and help those in need during the fasting month.

"In the spirit of the holy Ramadhan al-Mubarak, let us all strengthen our ibadah, and let us also not forget about the less fortunate by giving to charity," he said.

Musa said this in his speech for the Ramadhan Moon Sighting Ceremony at Al-Binuri Observation Centre at Tanjung Dumpil here, yesterday.

The text of his speech was delivered by Deputy Chief Minister cum Petagas assemblyman Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin.

Musa in his speech also called on the younger generation of Muslims to learn and be an expert in the studies of falak (astronomy), to honour and continue the legacy of early Muslim scholars renowned until today for their contribution in this field.

"It is important for the younger generation, as the human capital and leaders of the future, to take the lead in astronomy and revive the glory of the early Islam civilization. The success and greatness of the people of Islam in the past should serve as an example and inspiration for us to be an excellent, advanced community," he said.

Resort rehabilitates, releases turtle

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 10:03 AM PDT

KOTA KINABALU: Gaya Island Resort has released the young turtle it rescued in April this year.

The Green Sea Turtle was discovered malnourished and covered in barnacles, and was nursed back to health by the resort's Marine Centre. She was returned to sea after being verified fit and healthy, after three months in their care. She is the fourth turtle to be taken in by the resort.

Ninja, as she was later to be named, was first discovered by Gaya Island Resort Marine Centre on April 4, after the resort's Turtle Hotline received a call from Dr Nathan Sen, Assistant Director of Sabah Wildlife Department. He and his team had discovered a farmer who had a turtle in his possession. In Sabah, turtles are a protected species carrying a RM50,000 fine and five years' imprisonment for capturing them.

Dr. Sen rescued her and transferred her to Gaya Island Resort Marine Centre. Here, emaciated and suffering from septicemia, Ninja was put under the care of Marine Biologist Scott Mayback. She was kept under constant surveillance and given various medications including antibiotics and topical medication to remove barnacles. Within three months, her weight improved from 7.7kg to

8.6kg and her appetite and colour returned.

On June 27, after being deemed fit and able to survive back in the sea by Marine Research Foundation's Dr Nick Pilcher, Ninja was released by Gaya Island Marine Centre.

The event started with Dr Sen sharing a few words on how the young turtle came into their care, and with Mr. Mayback explaining the work gone into rescuing and rehabilitating Ninja.

"Saving a single turtle requires team effort," said Mayback. "For rescuing and

rehabilitating Ninja, I need to thank Dr. Sen, Sabah Wildlife Rescue Unit's Dr Diana Ramirez who helped with the medical treatments, and Dr Pilcher, without whom the turtle rescue centre would not have been founded. I hope that we can continue to not only help turtles and other sea life in need of care, but also motivate and inspire the public so they can also support and value our rich marine eco-system."

Present at Ninja's release were various wildlife bodies and supporting members. These included Sabah Wildlife Rescue Unit, WWF Malaysia and Reef Check. Also in attendance were hotel guests from numerous countries including Australia, China and the United Kingdom, and over 30 primary school students from Gaya Island's Kampung Gaya School, invited as part of the resort's initiative to educate and raise awareness regarding marine conservation and the importance of preserving the rich ecology of Borneo. The event ended with Dr Sen and Mayback carrying the turtle into the waters of Gaya Island Resort's private Tavajun Bay, where they released her into her natural habitat. Ninja is currently seven to 10 years old, and as Green Sea Turtles generally live up to approximately 80 years of age, is hoped to live a long, healthy life thanks to the rescue and rehabilitation team.

Gaya Island Resort houses Malaysia's first turtle rehabilitation centre, which comes complete with a turtle rescue hotline. The public is encouraged to call the Turtle Rescue Hotline at +60 13 899 9509 should they find a sick, injured or illegally kept turtle in Sabah.

SANDAKAN: A total of 88 wooden houses that were illegally built in a mangrove forest reserve here, were demolished during a three-day operation.

State Forestry Department (SFD) director Datuk Sam Mannan said the operation was held from May 26 to May 28 to expel illegal immigrants who had invaded the mangrove forest reserve, thus preventing the mangrove areas from becoming a hideout place for illegal immigrants.

Prior to the operation, Sam said a notice was given on April 7 to 314 houses comprising 1,468 dwellers in the mangrove forest reserve which is estimated at 15.3 hectares.

The areas involved were the Saling River, Tambaha (Timbang Island), Tandawan, Samaguan, Sekong Kecil, Inda Baru, Lansikan, Papahan, Tigowis, Lamiring, Tambaha, Payau River 1 to 6, Semangat Payau, Sungai Air/Telaga/Pupu Pelawan/ Jampiras 3 and Tabangka 1 to 3.

"Most of the dwellers demolished their houses and left voluntarily after receiving the notice.

"During a survey made by the Forest Department, together with the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) two days before the operation, we found that the number of houses had decreased to 212 houses with 1,008 dwellers from 314 houses with 1,468 dwellers," he said.

In a statement to The Borneo Post yesterday, Sam also said from the 212 houses, 10 of the houses were owned by locals while 13 illegal immigrants were referred to the Immigration Department for further action.

In the operation, 30 new notices were issued by SFD for illegal immigrants to leave the area within a month, and 11 new notices for local dwellers to be out from the area within six months.

The operation was jointly carried out by 90 SFD staff, 55 enforcement officers from ESSCom and the police, 30 officers from the Marine Operations Force and General Task Force, 14 staff members of the Immigration Department, eight members from the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency, and three members from the National Registration Department.
