All Blacks on brink of history after crushing England Posted: 21 Jun 2014 10:05 AM PDT HAMILTON, New Zealand: The All Blacks crushed England 36-13 at Waikato Stadium yesterday to sweep their three-Test series and equal the world record of 17 consecutive Test wins. New Zealand scored five tries, three by blockbusting wing Julian Savea, as they significantly stepped up the intensity and accuracy from their 20-15 and 28-27 victories in the first two Tests. The first half, when the All Blacks raced to a 29-6 lead, "was as good as it gets," in the eyes of coach Steve Hansen. "The first half performance was really special and really won us the game," he said. "The things we did well were the things that we'd been working hard on and we executed our skill sets nicely, our set piece was good, our running lines were great, catch and pass was good and we finished off tries." England coach Stuart Lancaster pulled no punches in his half-time message, and the second half saw the Red Roses attack more effectively. "There were some sharp words at half-time," said Lancaster, who also replaced inside centre Kyle Eastmond during the break. "Luther (Burrell) came in at 12 and I thought we showed a lot more urgency and intensity in the second half which obviously reflected in the performance." It was not enough, however. Such was the control the All Blacks had that when the final hooter went with them in possession, they kept the game going for another two minutes until Savea scored his final try. New Zealand now head into the Rugby Championship with 17 consecutive wins, matching the record of the 1965-69 All Blacks and the 1997-98 Springboks. — AFP |
Norazlee grabs early lead at Sarawak Classic Posted: 21 Jun 2014 10:02 AM PDT KUCHING: Norazlee Idris stole the limelight on the opening day of the 27th Sarawak Classic Golf Championship at Sarawak Golf Club (KGS) after he carded a gross score of 72 ahead of pre-tournament favourite and former champion Lee Ka Tung who was two strokes adrift with 74 strokes. In the absence of defending champion Alex Tiong who is studying in the US, Lee was obviously the leading contender to beat after having won the event seven times and last lifting the Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam challenge trophy in 2012. "I am not over rating my chances of winning this event because it is still the opening day and it's too early to predict … I will try to improve my score on the second day," said the zero-handicapper who had also won the recent 15th Sibu Amateur Open Golf Championship 2014 (SAOGC) at Sibu Golf Club. He won the (SAOGC) title for a record 10th time and had also bagged the 45th Sarawak Amateur Open Golf Championship title in Kuching on May 25. In the Ladies category, defending champion Laura Goh carded a gross score of 82 to lead the pack while Eliza Mae Kho, the nett champion of the recent SAOGC, is trailing by just one stroke. Meanwhile, the patron of the Sarawak Classic golf tournament, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam had expressed satisfaction with the increased number of participants this year. Over 250 golfers including invited guests from throughout Sarawak are competing this year at KGS' Siol-Demak and Santubong-Matang Nines and will end today. Sanctioned by Sarawak Golf Club, the participants are from KGS, Sarawak Junior Golf and First Association, Samarahan Country Club, Damai Golf and Country Club, Prisons Golf Club, Sibu Golf Club, Bintulu Golf Club and Miri Golf Club. |

Airil wins Perlis Closed by five strokes Posted: 21 Jun 2014 09:59 AM PDT KUCHING: In-form Airil Rizman won the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour's Perlis Closed Championship at Putra Golf Club in Kangar yesterday. The win, worth RM27,200, was a gradual rise to the top spot for Airil, who went three-two-one in his last three tournaments. He was third at the PGM Melaka Championship and runner-up at the Vascory Templer Park Championship last week. Coming into the last round yesterday with a two-stroke cushion, Airil shot a two-under 69 that gave him a six-under 282 total and five-stroke victory margin. Mohamad Rizal Amin, who has also shown some good form this season, achieved a career-best finish on the Tour with his second-place here. He too had a final day 69 and was one-under 287 for the tournament. The Tour's Order of Merit leader, R Nachimuthu, signed for a closing even-par 72, and was tied for third with Wilson Choo (73) and Ben Leong (74) on one-over 289. Twenty-one year-old Abel Tam, who led the RM170,000 event over the first two days, carded a 75 and finished sixth on 290, while Kim Leun Kwang (75) was another two shots back in seventh spot. Akhmal Tarmizee (72) was eighth on 294, with Lam Yu Shuen (73) and M Sasidaran (74) joint ninth on 295. The PGM Tour's second half of the season will resume with the PGM Asean Penang Championship at Penang Golf Club (formerly known as Bukit Jambul Country Club) in Bayan Lepas from Aug 6-9. Happy with his fine run of form, Airil said he was looking forward to the mid-season break that will be marked with the month of Ramadan. "The timing has been perfect," he said. "I had the third and second-place finishes before winning today, and as this is the start of the month-long break of the Tour, it is just excellent. "I have really played well over the past few events and for it to be highlighted today is great with the victory. "I hit the ball well during this good run and hope it continues through to the end of the season, which will be marked with five months of tough tournaments when we return to action after Hari Raya," he added. Commenting on what has been the root of this good form, Airil said he changed all his equipment, barring his three-wood, over the past couple of months and that this had worked well in his favour. He added that his ankle injury was fully healed. For his part, runner-up Rizal said he too was pleased with his week's work in Perlis. "I had a third-place finish at Impian (Championship) earlier this season, which equaled my best on the Tour," said the 30-year-old who from Kedah. "So to get a second place here is really very nice." And he added: "But that is not the end hopefully. I feel I have the game now to go on and win, so maybe the breakthrough will come sooner rather than later." The PGM Tour's second half of the season will resume with the PGM Asean Penang Championship at Penang Golf Club (formerly known as Bukit Jambul Country Club) in Bayan Lepas from August 6-9. |
Mark vs Danny for snooker final showdown Posted: 21 Jun 2014 09:57 AM PDT by Philip Wong reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on June 22, 2014, Sunday SIBU: Hot favourite Mark Yeo and the evergreen Danny Wong both underlined their title credentials as they fought their way to qualify for the final of the Sarawak Closed Central Region Snooker Championship. Mark, former Sibu Open champion and representing Executive 3 Snooker Centre, had to dig deep before overcoming a stubborn Sim Hong Hui 4-3 in an exciting and thrilling encounter. Meanwhile, the indomitable Danny, also representing Executive 3 Snooker Centre, held off a strong challenge from underdog Jee Chau Hui before wrapping up the match at 4-2 (9-63, 56-16, 68-28, 67-25, 45-54, 55-51). "Hopefully, I will be able to play better and play to my true ability in the final showdown with Danny," Mark said after making the final by a whisker. Mark fired the first salvo and took an early lead at nine points before Sim gained ground, bagging 18 points in a row to lead with 42-10 points. Trailing by 32 points, Mark resorted to playing a tactical game and it paid off at one stage when he managed to collect seven foul points to narrow the gap to 32-52. Mark continued to glitter but with three colored balls remaining and the points standing at 47-52, he was hit hard by misfortune. After potting a difficult blue ball, the cue ball somehow ended up in the wrong pocket, hence handling five foul points to Sim. Sim stepped up to clear the blue and pink balls to win the frame at 68-47. Mark started the second game strongly and immediately went into an attacking mode. He made a break of 15 points and 13 points at one stage and surged to a commanding lead of 49-14. Sim tried hard but found it difficult to break the rhythm before surrendering the frame at 14-55. In the third frame, Mark again rallied to an early lead before Sim recovered to level the score at 16 points each. Sharpshooter Mark made a break of 28 points to edge ahead at 44-22. With the points at 60-38, the chance fell upon Mark to clear the remaining three balls. Again, Mark was hit by misfortune and after potting the blue ball, the cue ball ball ended up in the pocket as well. Sim took over and cleared the table to win the frame at 61-60. Mark refused to throw in the towel and showcased his sharp form to take the fourth frame at 54-21 but the ding-dong battle continued when Sim retook the lead to win the fifth frame at 68-30. Mark came back from the brink of defeat to take the sixth frame at 78-43 before he secured victory by taking the deciding frame at 75-47. |
