BAU: SK Suba Buan has made the state and Bau, in particular, proud for being awarded cluster school status by the Education Ministry.

Bau district education officer Les Met said SK Suba Buan was the first and only one from this district to have received the accreditation thus far.

The accreditation is given based on the school's results in all aspects, including its performance in examinations.

"I don't know whether there are others in the state also receiving similar status, but as far as this district is concerned SK Suba Buan is the first ever," he told The Borneo Post after the launching of the Bau District Education Transformation Programme by Assistant Community Development Minister Datuk Peter Nansian at Bau Civic Centre yesterday.

Les congratulated headmistress Janet Ikut and her team for the remarkable achievement, for which they earned RM100,000 for development of the school.

He hoped that more schools here would be accredited with cluster school status next year since they had submitted six nominations to the Education Ministry for consideration.

"What we hope now is that the schools concerned can improve or at least maintain their excellent performances."

On the programme yesterday, which was attended by about 700 teachers from 41 secondary and primary schools in the district, he said it was aimed at preparing them to face new challenges in the fast-changing environment.

"We believe that in order to transform the district, we, teachers, must lead the way first."

Teachers reminded to practise professionalism at all time

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 12:40 PM PDT

BAU: Teachers play the most vital role in shaping the future of every student and as such teachers must practise the highest degree of professionalism at all times.

This reminder came from Assistant Community Development Minister Datuk Peter Nansian when opening the District Education Transformation Programme at the civic centre here yesterday.

"I am pleased that the district education office has taken this initiative to conduct this transformation programme since teachers are actually playing the most vital role in contributing towards nation building.

"We all know that teachers spend most of their time with students and because of that they have to be careful with their habits, behaviour and thoughts so as not to pass down negative attitudes to their students.

"The future of any nation depends very much on the upbringing of the younger generation and if they are taught negative values, they will one day create big trouble.

"This is where it is very vital for teachers to teach their students using the correct approaches because it cannot be denied that teachers in fact can ruin their country," he said.

As such, he said, teachers should be proud of their profession and to catch up with the fast changing world brought about by globalisation.

"The knowledge that we have acquired before can be obsolete and because the process of learning and relearning is of utmost importance. We cannot stay stagnant but we have to run and make sure that we run faster than our students.

"Only if we are ahead of them can we transform them but not otherwise," he stressed.

He pointed out that one of the ways teachers could improve themselves and acquire free information was through reading books.

"So I recommend teachers to read as many books as possible because by doing so you will actually show a good example to your students," he said.

Among those present at the ceremony yesterday was Bau District Officer Les Met.

Sesco obtains warrant to enter factory

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 12:39 PM PDT

KUCHING: Syarikat Sesco Berhad was granted a warrant by a magistrates' court to search and enter a plastic bottle factory at Jalan Teku in Sibu last week to inspect its meters after being denied entry by the factory workers several times.

According to a press statement, this was the second time Sesco had applied for the warrant from the court to enter the factory.

Last year, Sesco applied for the warrant to enter the factory and managed to inspect and replace the tampered meters.

However, the factory remained uncooperative to Sesco thereafter and this had caused difficulties for Sesco to take actual monthly meter readings and inspect the meters.

The operation included 15 Sesco technicians, Ministry of Public Utilities Electrical Inspectorate Unit (EIU) inspectors and Sesco's contractors.

In the operation, the Sesco Meter Inspection Team found tampering signs on the meters and proceeded to replace and also shifted all the meters to the Sesco service pole outside the factory compound to give Sesco easier access to the meters.

All the said meters are under close monitoring by Sesco and are safely locked and sealed in Sesco's metering cabinet, and any attempt to access them by unauthorised persons will be easily detected.

At the same time, the team also checked the meter of another property belonging to the company at Jalan Ding Lik Kong, which is used as management and logistics office.

The workers again did not allow the team to enter, but they relented in the end after being served the court warrant.

During the inspection, the team also found the seals of the meter had been tampered with and a foreign magnet attached to the back part of the meter, which was used to control a magnetic switch planted inside the meter. The meter and all relevant exhibits were seized for use as evidence in court.

Police reports have been lodged by the team on the meter tampering cases found at both premises, and the company will be called for interview to assist in the investigation.

Through the Ministry of Public Utilities, Sesco will initiate legal action against all defiant customers caught stealing electricity repeatedly.

Sesco is strictly monitoring all these repeated power theft offenders and will conduct regular meter checking exercises as part of its concerted efforts to curb them from re-tampering the meters.

The Ministry of Public Utilities and Sesco remind the public that stealing electricity is a crime and at the same time it endangers lives and can cause damage to customers' electrical appliances which will lead to fire.

Sesco will continue to actively carry out meter inspection and investigation operation throughout the state with assistance from Ministry of Public Utilities and the police.

The public may report any power theft via Sesco hotline at 082-443535. All information will be kept strictly confidential.

Big squeeze until SMK Singai opens — Nansian

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 12:37 PM PDT

KUCHING: The controversial SMK Singai should be completed on time so that it can cater to the increasing number of students from the area.

As it is, students are literally forced to 'squat' at three secondary schools in the district – SMK Bau, SMK Lake and SMK Paku.

Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Peter Nansian said this when contacted yesterday.

"I hope the contractor will be able to complete the project on time so that students from the area, especially from Musi to Tondong area, will not have to squeeze into the other three secondary schools in Bau.

"Currently, these three schools are so packed that their students' population has doubled from the capacity of their original designs," Nansian disclosed to The Borneo Post.

As such, he urged the contractor to expedite the works so that the project could be completed on time.

"The project which was supposed to start last year is expected to be completed by April next year. I hope the contractor will be able to complete the job so students from this area numbering some 1,000 would not have to squeeze at the other three secondary schools in Bau," reiterated the Assistant Minister of Community Services and Assistant Minister of Industrial Development.

SMK Singai, costing some RM45 million to complete, courted controversy last weekend when Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was baffled by the delay in the project.

The Borneo Post splashed over its front page on June 23 with Muhyiddin screaming "Where is the school?".

"I approved the school's construction. I am quite baffled why the project, which has been awarded to a contractor, could not be implemented according to schedule," Muhyiddin was quoted as saying at the 9th Redeems Gawai Carnival at Redeems Centre in Kampung Apar Wednesday night.

It was reported that the launching of the school site was carried out on April 14, 2013 by former deputy education minister Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi.

The project, located opposite Redeems Centre, is scheduled for completion by April next year. It was awarded to Semariang Bumi PJ Sdn Bhd.

The documents lodged by Semariang Bumi PJ with the Companies Commission of Malaysia on May 15, 2014 showed Amin Atem and Azibah Amin are directors while Lai Kee Chu the secretary.

The total issued capital is RM1,000,000 of RM1 each held by Amin Atem (600,000 shares) and Romzy Amin and Azibah Amin each holding 200,000 ordinary shares.

‘Let hawkers trade outside Ramadan bazaars’

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 12:36 PM PDT

by Johnson K Saai, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on June 28, 2014, Saturday

KUCHING: All local authorities are urged to relax their enforcement against hawkers operating during the fasting month.

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister's Office (Bumiputera Entrepreneur Development) Datuk Naroden Majais said the hawkers should be allowed to trade outside the specially designated Ramadan bazaars, including those by the roadsides or near their homes as long as they were not obstructing the flow of traffic in the area.

"If the stalls are not really causing obstruction to the flow of traffic I think hawkers should be allowed to operate outside the designated Ramadan bazaars. The hawkers, however, have to observe strict guidelines on health and food safety," he said at the presentation of special government loan under 1Ramadan Bazaar Scheme 2014 here yesterday.

Naroden, who is Simunjan assemblyman, said he would discuss the matter with the various local authorities.

He mentioned his fear that the hawkers who have applied for loan to set up a stall during the fasting month would not be able to repay their loans if the local councils were strict on them.

"If they cannot do business how are they going to pay their loans? My hope is that the local councils would relax some of their rules and regulations so that the hawkers could earn extra income at the end of the fasting month." Naroden said the federal government had set aside RM45 million for hawkers to open up food stalls at Ramadan bazaars throughout the nation.

"Sarawak's share of RM2,187,500 would be given out to 1,005 hawkers who have applied for the interest-free loan scheme. The loan ranges from RM500 to RM3,000 per applicant.

"Fifty per cent of the loan must be settled before the end of Syawal and the balance to be paid a month after Syawal."

According to Naroden, Kuching had the highest number of applicants with 560, followed by Miri (111), Limbang (64), Samarahan and Sri Aman (62 each), Sarikei (48), Sibu (43), Bintulu (32) and Mukah (23).

He thanked various parties, including Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism, Persatuan Penjaja and Peniaga Kecil Bumiputera Sarawak (PKBS) and Bank Rakyat for helping the applicants to get their loans.
