KUCHING: Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem has suggested that the Social Development Ministry and the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) carry out a post-mortem on Sarawak's performance in Sukma XVII together with the sports associations and sports experts.

He said the post-mortem is necessary to analyse and assess the weaknesses, strengths and overall performance of the athletes, officials and sports associations in preparation for Sukma XIX which Sarawak will host in 2016.

"I believe that after the post-mortem, formulae and measures can be taken to help improve and strengthen every athlete and officer in embracing the challenge in the coming Sukma," he said at the thanksgiving-cum-incentives presentation dinner for the state Sukma contingent at Margherita Hotel on Friday.

The text of Adenan's speech was read by Assistant Sports Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who is also the chef de mission of the Sarawak contingent.

The chief minister congratulated the state athletes for improving their performance at the 17th edition of the national games by finishing third overall after winning 48 gold, 32 silver and 35 bronze medals.

"This is a good achievement although we fell short of the 55 gold medals that we had targeted earlier. With the success in winning 48 golds, it is not impossible for Sarawak to become the champions in 2016 and for many more years to come," said Adenan.

Although many sports had failed to win any medal at this year's Sukma, Adenan believed that the sports associations concerned would continue to strive hard and stay focused in training potential athletes to shoulder the state's challenge in the coming Sukma.

He was also pleased with the performance of some of the athletes who had not only won golds in their respective events but also broke Sukma records.

They include Grace Wong Xiu Mei, Casier Renee Lee and Michael Sia Sung Dak who broke Sukma records in hammer throw, and the men's swimming team which broke the 4x200m freestyle relay record.

"I am very proud of weightlifter Jelinie Empara who was named the Best Female Athlete at Sukma XVII for breaking two Sukma records in the snatch, clean and jerk events."

Adenan also announced a special incentive of RM5,000 for Jelinie from the state government in addition to the RM3,000 she received from the National Sports Council for winning the Best Female Athlete award on Wednesday.

He said MSNS is paying out a total of RM437,750 in incentives to the athletes who had won medals in Sukma XVII and hoped that the incentives would serve as an encouragement and motivation to the athletes to train hard and aim for success.

Meanwhile, the swimming team grabbed the major share of the incentives payout with RM92,500, followed by tenpin bowling (RM72,250), petanque (RM51,500) tennis (RM38,500), athletics (RM29,750), wushu (RM26,750), silat (RM23,000), taekwondo (RM22,250) and lawn bowls (RM21,000).

Also present at the event were deputy chef de mission Affandi Keli, assistants chef de mission Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Datu Azman Samaon, Gerald Rentap Jabu and Dr Ong Kong Swee as well as acting MSNS director Lucas Kalang Laeng.

FAS appeal to Sarawak fans again

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 09:59 AM PDT

KUCHING: Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) have lamented how the lighting of flares at the Stadium Negeri had burned a big hole in their pockets.

While hoping that stadium seats will be sold out for home matches, FAS president Datu Sudarsono Osman appealed to Sarawak fans for sympathy as the association have to carry the burden of paying fines after every match.

"FAM (Football Association of Malaysia) have a set of rules and regulations for teams who want to compete in their league system. Failure to comply to these set of rules will definitely lead to three things namely fines, stadium bans and league points deduction," he explained.

One such rule is the prohibition of burning flares at all venues.

During a lunch-cum-press conference yesterday, Sudarsono added that the rule is in effect from "two hours before the match kicks off until all crowd completely disperse after the final whistle of the match."

He reported that Sarawak have so far paid a total of RM351,000 of fines for incidents related to flares in both home and away matches.

"We do understand that fans are in festive mood after matches and we want them to continue to be in (the mood) all they want. What we don't need is to pay the price as it is hefty for FAS," said Sudarsono. Other than flares, other objects such as flag sticks, be it wooden or those made from PVC pipes, are also prohibited.

For now, FAS will have to tighten security at the Stadium  Negeri during match days.

For home matches, he did not rule out screening fans who enter the stadium. But so far nothing has been decided yet.

The press conference was also attended by FAS secretary-general Abdullah Julaihi, FAS vice-presidents Haidel Heli and Razali Dolhan.

Praise for takraw tourney in shopping complex

KUCHING: Malaysia Sepak Takraw Association (PSM) vice president Datuk Paruwadi Musa was glad that tournament organisers in the state are alway trying their best to popularise the sport.

The latest effort to popularise the sport here is to organise an indoor sepak takraw tournament at a shopping complex.

"What organisers here in the state have done for the love of the sport is amazing. They even found a way to play it in shopping malls which I personally think is creative," he praised.

Paruwadi and Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof were at The Hills Shopping Mall yesterday to officiate the opening ceremony of a sepak takraw tournament.

Paruwadi also hoped that the tournament will attract more people here in the state, especially those from the non-Bumiputra community.

"I believe that there is still a lot of work needed to be done if we want to attract more interest among the non-Bumiputra community in the country. Maybe by showcasing this sport through this type of tournament (held at a shopping mall) could help a little bit," he said.

Meanwhile, Fadillah in his speech also mentioned the need to popularise sepak takraw in the country.

This was due to the fact that countries such as China, Korea and even some countries in Europe are showing interest in the sport.

"Malaysia should do everything to make sure the sports is always the number one sport in the country if the people here still want to call the sport their own. This sport is our pride," he commented.

He also thanked tournament organisers for naming the tournament after him (YB Datuk Haji Fadillah Haji Yusuf Sepak Takraw Championship).

The two-day tournament which was held annually since 2012 ends today.

The way to go for badminton — Lee

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 09:54 AM PDT

MIRI: More efforts are needed to produce top badminton players in Sarawak. Assistant Sports Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin said this after he officiated at the close of a badminton clinic conducted by former national coach Yap Kim Hock here from June 2-6. The five-day clinic was held Tung Sports badminton training centre near Padang Kerbau here.

Lee pointed to the need for more professional expertise and coaches and more training centres to help raise the standard of badminton in the state.

He also emphasised the importance of competition for players.

"After training, participation in competition is required to test their skills and ability, to meet their competitors and they shall learn in advance how to improve themselves," he explained.

Lee, who was also chef de mission of Sarawak's contingent in the recent 17th Sukma, noted that Sarawak did not obtain any medal in badminton in Perlis.

Meanwhile Yap, who constantly travelled around the country conducting clinics, said it took time to train potential players.

"But to discover the next Datuk Lee Chong Wei, based on the standard showed by the current young players, we are still far from reaching the expectation. I could fairly say that we have a lot of work to do," he observed.

He, however, remains hopeful.

"I did discover an 11-year old girl who could play very well, I am sure that with ample training and motivation, she could shine in international competition," he revealed.

18 players from around Miri, aged under 18, participated in the clinic.

Yap and his assistant Daniel Tan, a former national youth player, wrapped up the clinic by playing against two local players in a friendly match.

Proceeds from spectators at the friendly match was donated to MRC Kidney Dialysis Centre.
