SPA to be with voluntary organisations in community outreach Posted: 28 Jun 2014 12:02 PM PDT by Lim How Pim, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on June 29, 2014, Sunday KUCHING: The Public Services Commission (SPA) Sarawak Branch looks forward to collaborating with neighbourhood watch committees (KRT) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) statewide to carry out more outreach programmes for the community particularly the youths. Its division secretary Abdul Halim Abang Naili said the agency was ready to go to any part of the state if requested. "All this while, we have various programmes to educate the locals especially the young. To intensify our outreach efforts, we have collaborated with KRT and even a political party branch in organising our seminar. "If any NGOs or other local-based committees are interested in organising seminar for the youths, come to us to make it happen. We are even prepared to go to villages as we are always on the ground," he said when closing an SPA outreach seminar titled 'Tips and guidance to enter public services' at the multi-purpose hall of Customs Malaysia Sarawak branch at Jalan Matang here, yesterday. Only 10 young people took part in the half-day seminar jointly organised by the SPA Sarawak branch, Taman Lee Ling KRT and education bureau of PBB Tupong branch. Halim admitted the response yesterday was not encouraging, but the agency would keep up its effort in reaching out to the local people. He disclosed a similar had been scheduled for July 12 at the Kota Samarahan Civic Centre, adding: "We will make sure to gather more participants for our forthcoming seminar." He said seminar on tips for booking a place in the employment market mattered more than one could have given it credit for. "We aim to guide our children especially job seekers on how to 'sell' themselves to the job interviewer," he said, pointing out seminar on employment guidance was a course akin to the lessons required before getting a driving licence. Halim said participants were equipped with skills on how to behave during a job interview. "Whether you are seeking a job in the public or private sector, you need to be prepared for questions during an interview. For this seminar, we also guide them on how to apply for a job through the portal. "While more than 300 positions are available, they have to prepare for not just interviews but also examinations." Among those present were state National Integrity and Unity Department officer Rose Jonathan Garau and chairman of Taman Lee Ling KRT, Mohamed Sa'et Amran. |
Man found dead beside lorry in ravine Posted: 28 Jun 2014 11:56 AM PDT by Anthony Aga, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on June 29, 2014, Sunday SARIKEI: A man was found dead near a chemical/ gas tanker which apparently plunged into a 10 metre deep ravine in Sebangkoi area early yesterday morning. It is believed that the lorry travelling from the direction of Kuching had skidded off the road into the ravine while descending the steep slope of Bukit Sebangkoi. A team of policemen on a routine patrol in the area spotted the tanker lying on its side in the ravine around 7am and discovered the man, believed to be the driver, lying unconscious beside it when they went down to check. They immediately notified the Traffic Police Office and District Fire and Rescue Services Station here. A team of 10 firemen led by Haron Jenai arrived at the scene at 7.36 to bring the body out of the ravine. Haron said the slope is almost 90 degrees steep and they had to use a pulley to pull up the victim in a stretcher. The driver was pronounced dead by the waiting paramedic when he was brought up to the road, Haron added. The driver, who was believed to be alone, had not been identified as the investigation team could not find any identification document on his body or in the vehicle. State government to focus on rural development to narrow rich-poor gap Posted: 28 Jun 2014 11:55 AM PDT BINTULU: The state government will place emphasis on rural development to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor in Sarawak. Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem said yesterday there was a need to narrow down the increasingly widening disparity. Speaking at the annual Gawai-Kaamatan Celebration 2014 at Rh Meikle Ding, a 28-door modern Iban longhouse in Sungai Seputan, Sebauh about 55 kms from here, he said there must be an improvement in the life of the rural poor. The celebration was jointly organised by the Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), led by its president Datuk Joseph Salang and the Sabah Kadazanduzun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), under Bonipasius Bianis. "That is why I have asked for an increase in oil royalty from the federal government. "I have talked to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak about this and he seems quite receptive to it. I will pursue it further," Adenan said, adding that he would be attending a briefing by the national oil and gas company, Petronas on its activities in the state tomorrow. Meanwhile he reiterated his advice for the different communities in the state and Sabah to continue to zealously safeguard their existing peace and harmony. "For Sarawak, we will continue to ban outside racists and religious bigots from coming in to destroy these for us," he said. Although Islam was the country's official religion, he said, everyone was free to practise the religion of their choice. At the function Adenan announced a government grant of RM900,000 to improve the Kemana-Jepak Road. — Bernama |
