Deputy Prime Minister praises Taib's contributions to state, rates his achievements 'unthinkable'

KUCHING: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has described the tremendous contributions of Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud as 'unthinkable' for his success in the overall development of Sarawak.

At a news conference here yesterday, Muhyiddin briefly laid out the past endeavours of Taib while saying what he had done for the state was 'unthinkable' for he could not provide greater  success stories off hand.

Of utmost importance, he said that Taib had successfully brought all ethnic groups and races in Sarawak together as one during his long tenure of 33 years.

"He brings people of different background, cultural and religious practices together. Unity is one of the successes and legacies he leaves behind," he said after a closed-door dialogue session with consumers, traders, hawkers and suppliers here yesterday.

Muhyiddin said Taib had also maintained close ties with the federal government to help bring about more progress to the state.

"At a personal level, we have helped each other to see more development in not just Sarawak but also in the nation."

On Taib's successor Tan Sri Adenan Satem, Muhyiddin said: "I acknowledge Adenan's contribution at the federal level back then. He could carry on the policies implemented by Taib while introducing some new initiatives.

"I fully support what has been decided. And we will make sure we assist to further develop Sarawak."

He believed Adenan, the next chief minister to be sworn in on Feb 28, would uphold his predecessor's legacy for continued progress of Sarawak in Malaysia.

He was also pleased to note that all PBB leaders and members were behind Taib's decision to name Adenan as his successor.

"I understand that PBB has given its mandate to Taib and state BN all the support for the succession. It is a good enough start and what PBB has portrayed makes a role model for BN."

He hoped Sarawak would continue to see another wave of development in future under the new leadership.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu and Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof were among those present at the press conference.
