300 left homeless after longhouse fire

Posted: 26 Feb 2014 12:19 PM PST

MARUDI: A fire destroyed 45 of the 80 doors of a Berawan longhouse in Long Jegan, Ulu Tinjar yesterday, leaving some 300 residents homeless.

The fire occurred around 2pm, when most of the residents were away harvesting padi or tending to their oil palm smallholdings.

Residents who remained said they could only watch helplessly as the fire tore through the longest block of the longhouse.

The dry weather and easily combustible timber used to construct the longhouse made it almost impossible to save any belongings.

This is the second fire at Long Jegan in recent years, and the block included bilik which had yet to be completed.

Meanwhile, the Welfare Department has sent its officers to the scene to ascertain the number of victims requiring immediate relief.

Police from Beluru have also left for the longhouse to investigate.

Assistant Minister of Public Utilities Datuk Sylvester Entri Muran has called on the department and police to assist the victims, particularly in filing reports of their losses.

Most of the victims are currently putting up with relatives and at SK Long Jegan, which escaped unscathed.

Farmer gets 2 years’ jail, whipping for attempted snatching

Posted: 26 Feb 2014 12:18 PM PST

KUCHING: A farmer from Siburan was sentenced to two years' jail and whipping by one stroke of the rotan after he pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to snatch a woman's gold necklace in Siburan last year.

Chai Kau Lee, 47, appeared before Judge Allaudeen Ismail who convicted him on his own under Section 395 of the Penal Code read together with Section 511 of the same code.

He committed the offence near a graveyard at Mile 17, along Kuching-Serian Road on Sept 5 last year around 5pm with another person who is still at large.

Chai admitted that while riding pillion with another person he tried to snatch the woman's necklace when she was walking to her house nearby.

This prompted the woman, in her 60s, to scream for help, which was heard by her husband and son who rushed out to see her struggling to defend herself.

Upon seeing the victim's son and husband, the duo fled from the scene. The victim's husband then gave chase on a motorbike and managed to apprehend the pillion rider who is the accused.

In his mitigation yesterday, Chai begged for leniency as he is the sole breadwinner in the family.

He said his wife had left the family and he is a father and mother for his two children aged four and seven.

DPP Stella Augustine Druce prosecuted while defence counsel Lim Lian Kee represented Chai.

BINTULU: Twelve individuals, including three women, were detained when police raided three cyber gambling dens here on Monday and Tuesday.

They were aged between 19 and 40 years.

The 'Ops Dadu' raid hit cyber centres at Parkcity, Medan Jaya and Sungai Plan Commercial Centre.

Overall, 21 units of computers were seized and cash totalling RM345.

The case is being investigated under Section 4B(a) of the Open Gaming House Act 1953.

If convicted, the premises owner can be fined up to RM10,000 per unit of gambling machine, five years imprisonment, or both, said Bintulu police chief Supt Madang Usat.

"We, thus, advise the people, especially the young ones, not to be involved in cyber gambling or visit such premises.

"We (police) will continue to curb cyber gambling in the division," he told a press conference yesterday.

Last year, police here raided 79 premises, arrested 211 people, and seized 459 units of gambling machines and RM15,297 in cash.

From January to Feb 25 this year, five premises were raided, 31 people nabbed, and 42 units machines and RM495 cash were seized.

On an unrelated case, Madang said its narcotics unit recorded 48 cases of various offences from January to Feb 25 this year.

Three masseuses nabbed at two reflexology centres

Posted: 26 Feb 2014 12:16 PM PST

KUCHING: Three Vietnamese women were nabbed by state Anti-Vice, Gaming and Gangsterism unit (D7) personnel during separate raids on two reflexology centres in Miri on Tuesday.

The first raid took place at a commercial centre at Jalan Kubu where a 37-year-old Vietnamese masseuse was detained under Section 372B of the Penal Code on suspicion of being involved in vice-related activities.

This was followed by a second raid on another reflexology centre at the same commercial centre in which two more Vietnamese women, aged 22 and 37, were picked up for immigration-related offences.

The state D7 team then proceeded to raid a shop within the same area, which was suspected to be operating as a cyber gambling den, seizing 25 computers and over RM400 in cash while detaining a male worker.

Acting on further information received, the team headed to Jalan Bulan Sabit and raided a second cyber gambling den, confiscating 24 computers and RM800 in cash, as well as detaining a male worker.

Both workers are being investigated under the Common Gaming Houses Act.

Association to send govt memorandum on Baleh Dam

Posted: 26 Feb 2014 12:15 PM PST

KAPIT: The Baleh Dam Residents Welfare Organisation Committee will send a memorandum to the state government on the development of the hydroelectric dam.

Deputy chairman Bujah Jantai said the association and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) seek transparency in the project's implementation.

"We've drafted a memorandum to the state government to come up with a complete package for the development during the pre-construction, construction and post-construction of the said project. The said package shall include the sustainability and continuity of the economic development plan, the community resettlement programme, infrastructure, health, education, local participation and internal security.

"Before the kick-off of the project, we need to have representatives in the Technical Steering Committee for Baleh Hydro and also direct access to any ministry concerned so that we can put our grievances and grouses directly to the responsible party," he told a press conference after attending a dialogue on the project on Tuesday.

He said the proposed dam is supported as the people wish to see it become a catalyst for the development of Baleh.

"For the short term, we want to see the immediate socioeconomic impact of the said project, such as the fulfilment of basic infrastructure. The main road from Kapit to Putai must be constructed first. Apart from the main road, access roads to all smaller tributaries such as Merirai, Gaat, Kain, Mujong and Sut must be made available," he explained.

Bujah also called for comprehensive economic packages in terms of agricultural development to be made available.

"This continuity and sustainability of economic plans shall include giving priority to the NCR (Native Customary Rights) land development perimeter survey, individual survey and titles, rubber block planting, fisheries, livestock farming, eco-tourism, and other economic activities that can benefit the people — they must be included in the plans.

"So assurance from the relevant agencies and the government are needed before the said project can take off. The complete packages shall be worked out by all related agencies, locals and the local authority, SEB (Sarawak Energy Berhad), state government, federal government."

On the resettlement areas, he said they must be in line with the government's policy of 21st century villages.

"The areas that will be directly affected should be given additional developed land or areas as compensation for their livelihood. Smallholder oil palm and rubber plantations could be considered as substitution. With the implementation of the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) and Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), we believe that there are plans that could be outlined and shall benefit us in the future.

"Meaning we want the government to allocate an agreed hectarage of land at the dam areas to be implemented for these programmes. The said land shall be developed with cash crops, so that it will become the main source of income for the locals. Meanwhile, in these new villages, other economic activities such as tourism and aquaculture should enable the villagers to make more income," he said.

He added that locals should be given priority in terms of employment and business opportunities.
