Wooden shops in Kpg Beratan razed by fire

Posted: 21 Feb 2014 11:42 AM PST

KUCHING: A row of wooden shops near Kampung Beratan at Mile 16 Jalan Puncak Borneo here was destroyed by fire on Thursday.

No injuries were reported in the 9pm incident in which eight of the 11 units of shophouses were gone within minutes of the fire breaking out.

The fire was believed to have started from a motorcycle workshop before spreading to a unit being rented by a couple. It quickly gutted the remaining units housing a coffee shop and a mini supermarket.

According to the couple staying there, they became aware of the fire after sensing strong heat coming from the adjacent unit and seeing thick smoke billowing behind their kitchen. The husband, who gave his name as Mat, said he told his wife to run to safety while he grabbed two mobile phones and his car key to save his Proton Persona.

He was, however, unable to salvage other things, including his uncle's old Toyota Corolla car, which was parked next to his car.

The operator of the mini supermarket, meanwhile, said he was only able to save his day's takings from the cash register before fleeing, and could do nothing except watch helplessly as the fire gutted his shop and all of his stock inside.

Those affected all agreed the fire began at the motorcycle repair shop, which was empty at the time as the sole worker staying there had left to buy food earlier.

Several motorcycles that had been sent for repairs were also destroyed along with everything else inside the workshop.

Personnel from Siburan fire station who rushed to the scene were able to prevent the flames from spreading to three semi-completed units.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
