MIRI: SMK Luar Bandar Miri started this year with a strong determination to improve the school's achievement in all aspects.

One of the efforts taken was to go on a benchmarking visit to several schools in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah apart from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) from Jan 17 – 19.

Thirty-four teachers from the school led by its principal, Marcus Gau Lian, took part in the visit to SM Sains Sabah, SMK St Michael Penampang and SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin Penampang.

"The main purpose of this visit is to give exposure to the teachers on the implementation of "Lestari' Programme and 5s Innovation Programme

It also provided an opportunity for the school to gain better insight on the efficiency and effectiveness of a school's management," said Marcus yesterday to the Borneo Post.

From the visit, he said, teachers were exposed to the schools' management, implementation of 'Lestari' Programme as well as 5s Innovation Programme.

Besides, teachers were able to look at the schools' surroundings and environment. The principals from all three schools shared their experiences with the teachers.

"We hope that this visit will benefit all teachers in order to improve the quality of the school. This benchmarking also serves a vehicle of source for improvement ideas from the schools visited," he said.

Marcus added that teachers involved also found the visit useful for the school and they had gained a complete picture on how the programme can be used to improve the school's performance.

Focus on unity, Anwar tells opposition parties in Sabah - The Borneo ...

Posted: 26 Jan 2014 02:35 PM PST

KOTA KINABALU: National opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reminded Pakatan Rakyat (PR) component parties in Sabah to focus on the unity of the coalition.

Anwar who was met at Sabah Parti KeADILan Rakyat's (PKR) Maulidur Rasul celebration at Millenium Centre along Jalan Lintas Kepayan here, said this when asked what had transpired at a breakfast meeting he had with the PR component parties in Sabah yesterday.

"I met the leaders of PKR, DAP and PAS. I reminded them to focus on the issue of unity not only in Pakatan but more so in racial and religious harmony because that is our strength, our focus in the thrust of our policy as opposed to Umno/BN.

"The PR leaders must come up with a common stand, common statements and go together to assure the Muslims, Kadazan and Chinese that we are united in dealing with all the issues," he said.

The PKR de-facto leader also said that during the meeting he spoke to the Sabah PR leaders about the economic issue in the state as well as the country.

"We need to explain because the government says everything is due to international market forces. I re-countered by saying that internationally the prices of sugar and petrol have gone down in the past one year but in Malaysia it continues to move up.

"On the issue of sugar, the problem is of course cronyism because one company controls so there is no competition. The wealth of the state has not changed, before the election this was our major criticism, the few are super rich the majority of the vast majority are not benefiting from the enormous wealth," he opined.

Anwar who was on a two-day working visit to Sabah, arrived on Saturday and proceeded to meet PKR members as well as supporters in Kudat and Kota Belud.

On his visit to Kadamaian in Kota Belud, he said that the support for PKR there was still very strong.

Kadamaian was won by PKR in the 13th general election but later lost the seat after its assemblyman, Jeremy Malajad, defected and is now aligned to Barisan Nasional (BN).

"The response to our program was good and although the majority of the constituents are KadazanDusun and Christians, the situation in relation to the 'Allah' and Bible seizure issues there is not as tense as the Umno/BN leaders are making it seemed," he stressed.

Anwar added that he took time to explain to the people about PR and PKR's stand on the 'Allah' and Bible seizure issues so that the people know and will not be confused.

He also disclosed that he met with the Sabah PKR supreme council members on Satuday night and spoke to them about the need to focus on racial as well as religious unity.

"Another issue I touched on was about the economic situation of the country which has resulted in a very moderate celebration of the Chinese New Year. We can see that the people's purchasing power has decreased and this is not only happening in Sabah but all over the country.

"If the Chinese community is also affected by the slow economy, it can be said that the other communities will be feeling the brunt of it too and the government has yet to address the problem," he said.

Meanwhile when asked to comment on Sabah PKR chief Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin's claim that support for PKR in some Muslim areas in the state had waned, Anwar said that there was truth to the claim and this was not only in Sabah but also in other states.

"This could be because the people there are not exposed to information such as the 'Allah' issue which is something the Christian community is feeling pressure about. But the way Umno is campaigning the issue is by claiming that Islam is under threat and if they do not make a stand, Muslims will lose their religious influence and political power.

"We therefore must go down to the ground to explain to the people, especially the grassroots about this issue because if we allow the situation to remain so, the perception will be that political power is in the hands of the Muslims and Islam is the federation's religion.

"Muslims are the majority in Malaysia so what are you (Umno) afraid of?" Anwar questioned and opined that it is just a political excuse to cover up the corruption cases and economic problems in the country.

Price monitoring intensifies in Sabah - The Borneo Post Online

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 03:30 PM PST

KOTA KINABALU: Efforts to detect and punish errant traders who ignore government's warning not to sell daily items beyond their ceiling prices continue to intensify.

Yesterday, the state Umno Youth took the initiative to conduct a spot check on prices of essential items at Giant Supermarket in Kolombong, accompanied by officers and personnel from the Domestic Trade, Co-Operatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) Sabah branch.

Its chief Yamani Hafez Musa, who led the inspection, said the movement together with all other Barsisan Nasional's (BN) components would continue to assist the relevant authorities to ensure no traders were taking advantage of the recent fuel hike to charge exorbitant prices.

"The increase of prices of daily goods is currently the main focus of both the BN government and opposition leaders. It has attracted controversy and many wild speculations.

"Amidst all this, it is a fact that the government has taken various initiatives and strategies, including through the KPDKK, to keep the situation in check," he said to reporters when met during the inspection.

He stressed that while the increasing prices of daily essential items was now the trending topic, it should be addressed sincerely, collaboratively and in a non-partisan manner.

He said everyone should deal with the issue for the benefit of the consumer and not simply politicizing it for their own personal agenda.

"If this is not handled wisely, I am worried that this issue will drag further and may even worsen. Like I have said before, we need to approach this problem rationally and I hope everyone would work together so that the grouses of the people can be addressed.

"We must remember that the welfare of the people should be our biggest priority, more than our personal interest," he said.

He noted Umno Youth had launched a nationwide campaign to monitor prices of essential products, starting with inspections at retail premises in Selayang by their chief, Khairy Jamaludin.

He said this was in support of various measures being implemented by KPDKK to protect the public from greedy and irresponsible traders.

According to him, checks conducted by Umno Youth found that most of the price increases were caused by greedy middlemen who took advantage of the fuel subsidy reduction to gain more profit.

As a result, retail operators would transfer the cost to end consumers by increasing their selling prices, he explained.

Meanwhile, KDPKK Sabah deputy director Suhaimi Mat Sari revealed that 160 offences has been detected so far this year, mostly involving traders failing to properly display the prices of their products.

He said only about 10 per cent of the cases involved traders selling controlled items above what was allowed.

He said the ministry had taken a stringent approach in dealing with those involved, noting that the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act provides a fine up to RM100,000 and three years' imprisonment.

Those with inquiries or complaints and information on traders violating the Act could contact KPDKK hotline at 1-800-886-800, he added.

Solar, wind energy can change power generation in Sabah ...

Posted: 08 Dec 2013 10:02 AM PST

KUDAT: Renewable energy from solar and wind turbine is not only an excellent power alternative for the future but it can also revolutionise electricity generation in Sabah, says Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin.

He said Sabah had its own uniqueness as it endowed was rich natural resources which could be used to generate renewable energy and contribute to economic development.

"Operational cost for power generation is extremely high and power producers like Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd face a great challenge and the problem has been further aggravated by the inconsistent hike in fuel prices.

"As such, the government always welcomes any party that can come foward to explore and apply green energy and simultaneously support the government's move to develop sustainable energy," he said when launching two TechnoFund Mosti projects here yesterday.

The projects, the Application of Wind Technology System for Energy Generation and the Sustainable Thin Film PV Building and the Renewable Energy Generation, have been entrusted to Sirim Bhd by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation for research and development.

Overall, the projects can generate 25 kw of wind turbine power and 9.8 kw of solar energy.

The power generated can light up a resort near the project site in Tg Simpang Mengayau and can be supplied and stored in a battery system.

Ewon said the research findings can be developed on a large scale, commercially, and can contribute towards reducing the number of power interruptions in Sabah.

It can also bring cheer to the many rural residents who live far away from grid areas.

In the long-term, renewable energy can become a big alternative to the current practice of generating electricity from fuel oil, charcoal, diesel and hydro reservoirs which incur huge operational costs.

TechnoFund is a grant scheme funded by Mosti which covers 13 projects under the Renewable Energy Task Force.

Established by the Cabinet, the scheme provides funding for technology development, up to pre-commercialisation stage, with the commercial potential to create new businesses and generate economic wealth for the nation. — Bernama
