Flowers sold via the Internet worries florists

Posted: 14 Feb 2014 11:48 AM PST

SIBU: Sprouting online sales of flowers has become a cause for concern to florists selling flowers the conventional way.

Florist Johnny Wong noted the younger generation preferred to shop online for flowers.

"With web-based technologies such as Facebook, wechat and so on, youngsters can source and purchase for the item they require at the click of the mouse.

"And they can do so at their own convenience and pace," Wong said when asked on their major competitors.

He added: "Online traders can afford to price their flowers lower as they do not have fixed cost.

"But we have to pay for shop rental, wages and other expenses."

Wong, however, urged shoppers to be cautious when shopping online.

"For example, a bouquet of flowers may appear very appealing online but when you receive the item, it is a different story altogether," he claimed.

He noted the prices of flowers offered online were volatile unlike those with physical shops at stable prices.

Wong also said the presence of seasonal florists during Valentine's Day, Ching Ming Festival and so on had also affected their sales.

He observed that people were more prudent in their spending these days.

"I foresee tougher times next year when Valentine's Day falls few days before the Lunar New Year," he lamented.
