KUCHING: A young woman had her right hand severed while three men were left with minor injuries in an accident near the Simpang Tiga flyover here yesterday afternoon.

The vehicle was said to have veered out of control and rammed into the metal road divider before it turned turtle at the middle of the road at the flyover.

The accident occurred around 12.30pm, involving the group who are from out-station.

The 19-year-old female victim was seated in the back seat. She was rushed to the hospital in a 911 ambulance.

The group from Sibu had just arrived in the city on Saturday prior to the accident.

The four of them were said to be heading to the city for lunch.

Fire and Rescue Department personnel rushed to the scene while traffic police personnel were on hand to conduct investigations.

Baru: RM1 billion not enough for dilapidated schools in Sabah ...

Posted: 19 Feb 2014 11:27 AM PST

KUCHING: The amount of RM1 billion allocated for the improvement of about 600 dilapidated schools in Sabah and Sarawak will not be sufficient.

This is because, says Ba Kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian, in Sarawak alone there are around 800 of such schools.

"However, some questions arise. Why is that the figures from the federal government and the Sarawak Education Department do not tally? The federal government's figures suggest that there are fewer of such schools in Sarawak than what is disclosed by our Education Department," the state PKR chairman said in a press conference here yesterday.

When announcing the allocation last Friday, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had said most of the dilapidated schools, numbering about 600, were located in Sabah and Sarawak.

However, it was reported in newspapers yesterday that there are some 800 dilapidated schools in Sarawak, with Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah quoted as saying that these schools were unfit for occupancy but continued to be used as the students and teachers had no choice.

Baru said the Education Ministry should accept the results of the audit done by the Education Department and allocate more funds to the schools as necessary.

He also said the revelation on the number of dilapidated schools in Sarawak and Sabah is a damning indictment of the extent of the federal government's neglect of the needs of both states while treating both states as its fixed deposit.

"It is stated in the Education Blueprint that by Dec 2013, all 1,608 schools requiring critical repairs would be fixed and that these repairs would start in Sabah and Sarawak. Are the 600 dilapidated schools in Sabah and Sarawak part of the 1,608 schools requiring critical repairs?

"Common sense would suggest that they should. Assuming that they belong to that category of schools needing critical repair, does this mean that the Education Ministry has failed to achieve its target of completing all repairs by Dec 2013?"

Baru stated that the state PKR would also like to know how the RM1 billion is to be utilised and how the allocation will be made, adding that priority should be given to rural schools as rural students are at a huge disadvantage compared to those in the cities.

"The younger generation in the rural areas deserve the opportunity to learn and better themselves through education and to have that it is important to provide schools that are conducive to the process of education, not the dilapidated and collapsing buildings that many have to contend with now."

Stiff test for Sarawak tonight - The Borneo Post Online

KUCHING: Robert Alberts insists that he is treating the FA Cup quarter-final second-leg match with Felda United as if the Crocs are playing against a Super League side.

While relegated to the Premier League this season, Felda United – according to Sarawak's head coach – packs a punch like any other Super League outfit.

Among the players the Crocs will face in tonight's home game are Shukor Adan and Indra Putra Mahayuddinn who have 44 and 41 international caps respectively.

Felda, Alberts said, have invested well in players this season and are not destined to stay in the Premier League for long.

The clash at the Stadium Negeri will decide who enters the final four in the FA Cup.

The two teams played to a scoreless draw last week.

Team Sarawak also enter the second leg match with certain handicaps.

Junior Eldstal is likely to miss the match through suspension, pending a decision from Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) disciplinary panel today after the Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) submitted an appeal yesterday.

"I believe that the team has a strong case for an appeal against the red card flashed at him last week. As far as I know, we have done everything on our part," added Alberts.

Out due to injury are Zamri Morshidi and Milorad Janjus. Akmal Rizal Ahmad Rakhli might get the nod to start.

Reshafiq Alwi and Ramesh Lai Ban Huat, also on the injured list, will only know whether they can be match fit today.

Central defender Gabor Gyepes is also doubtful after sustaining a hard knock in the battle against Perak last Saturday.

Injured S. Chanturu, however, might recover sufficiently to make his debut in the flanks tonight.

Kick off is 8.45pm.

Stubborn Felda United deny fighting Crocs - The Borneo Post Online

KUCHING: It was a match that Sarawak had to win to qualify for the FA Cup semi-finals.

But their opponent Felda United have to be credited for a fine performance in last night's quarter-final second-leg clash.

Both teams had played to a scoreless draw last week. Based on the away goal rule, Felda only needed a draw in the second leg as long as the match was not scoreless.

Sarawak fans demonstrated their loyalty to pack the Stadium Negeri despite this being a week day encounter.

Alireza Abbasfard was given the nod as Sarawak's lone striker up front. But the team missed the services of Zamri Morshdi, Milorad Janjus and Junior Eldstal.

Hairol Mokhtar, Mafry Balang, Ramesh Lai Ban Huat and Gabor Gyepes made up the back four.

Ronny Harun took on the defensive midfield role.

Felda United showed they meant business right from the start with their numerous attacks.

Joseph Kalang came close in the 9th minute with a long range shot.

In the 17th minute the Sarawak skipper conjured a superb solo effort from the middle of the park and dribbled past two Felda defenders.

This time he was not to be denied as he lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Mohd Farizal Harun.

In the 22nd minute Felda nearly found their equaliser after Sarawak goalie Sani Annuar failed to handle the ball cleanly.

But the equaliser did come 13 minutes later for both teams to troop out for the first half break with the score level at 1-1.

After the interval Felda continued to look dangerous with their quick counter attacks.

Akmal Rizal came in for Alireza in the 72nd minute.

The substitution looked like it could be the match winner when Akmal found the net after a corner kick. There were only 10 minutes left to play.

But it was not to be Sarawak's night. Within minutes, Felda drew level again.

The full-time score at 2-2 meant the Crocs are out of the 2014 FA Cup while Felda United march on to the semi-finals.

Team Corbusier eyeing more glory - The Borneo Post Online

Posted: 21 Feb 2014 08:45 AM PST

by Marshall Tiong, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on February 22, 2014, Saturday

Sarawak's top cycling outfit start season at Shah Alam Criterium

KUCHING: Sarawak's top cycling outfit Team Corbusier, begins its 2014 campaign this weekend in Peninsula Malaysia.

With no races announced for Kuching, or Sarawak for that matter, Corbusier will start its race calendar in Selangor at the Shah Alam Criterium.

They will be fielding the core of its successful 2013 Sarawak Health race team.

Leading their charge will be West Kalimantan's Fito Prilanji and Yudi Rachmad with local racers Laurel Lauridsen Adrian and Zaid Ismail.

UiTM's Charles Diking would have been included in the squad if not for collegiate commitments.

Fito captained Corbusier's Health race winning team which saw Laurel winning the race after a superb lead-out by Yudi. The Indon pro will be a key feature for Corbusier this season after being dropped from Team CCN, the Brunei-based UCI team.

"Fito will be riding extensively for us this season," said Team Corbusier principal Safri Mohammed.

After a fine debut season, the team are now focusing on getting its local riders established.

With the help of Aussie pros Paul van der Ploeg and Dan Bonello, Corbusier established itself in the Malaysian cycle racing scene as an exciting team willing to take chances.

"We tried very hard to get recognised last year. Now, we are a known factor," said Safri. One of their targets for this season is to race in Malaysian races which carry ranking points as they focus on their corp of talented local riders.

"This year, we are going to try to get our young local riders established in the elite level," said Safri.

To that end, they will be racing in the Malaysian GP Series and UCI races.

One of their first UCI races will be the Chief Minister's Cup in Malacca.

They will certainly be racing in the Jelajah Malaysia and the Tour of Borneo.

The Borneo race was where they scored their first ever victory when Ploeg outsprinted the bunch to take the first stage. With the success of their UCI squad, the progress of their development squad has taken on an added emphasis.

"I am really pleased to see our juniors, especially the U19 squad, progressing very well," Said Safri.

He recognised the need to establish a proper vehicle to enable their up-and-coming riders to make it at the national level.

The team are working with the Sarawak Cycling Association and various agencies in an effort to achieve this goal.

Safri's vision for Corbusier is to see it become a platform not just for Sarawak riders but riders from throughout Borneo as well. As he sees it, they already have Kalimantan pros like Fito and Yudi in addition to Sabahans Laurel and Charles.

Top Sarawak masters racer Supian Nor is the team's coach and they also have top junior Garry Tay who is now training with the Sukma squad in Perlis.

Another rider who is key to the team's plan is Bintulu-based Sylvester Ding.

The local uni grad was a key support rider in the Jelajah and Safri is keen to use him in future stage races, provided his work commitments does not clash with the races.

The team also have the 'X' factor in the form of Aussie Ploeg, who is the current world champion in the mountainbike eliminator event.

Nobody would have thought that a small Borneo-based club would have this in their resume when Corbusier signed Ploeg to race in the UCI races in 2013.

There is no Malaysian team with a tie to a world champion. Safri acknowledged this marketing coup and is hoping to take advantage of this incredible opportunity.

"We would love to bring Paul here for a race. It just needs the right sponsors and I am hopeful we an do that."

Just imagine the buzz this would create if a true-blue Rainbow Jersey-wearer were to show up here in the Capital City.

For the uninitiated, the Rainbow Jersey is the jersey awarded to all UCI world champions.
