Man held in suspected job scam

Posted: 25 Feb 2014 12:08 PM PST

SIBU: The police here have arrested a man suspected to have cheated 11 men from his Stabau village by convincing them of non-existent jobs in Sabah that he claimed could earn them RM250 hourly.

The 11 villagers were said to have been so convinced that some had resigned from their jobs in the hope of getting a better income.

The suspect told them there were jobs in an oil company in the neighbouring state, and they all had to pay him a middle-man fee of RM2,000 each.

After receiving the 'commission', he asked them to go to a company in Miri for the job arrangement.

However, when the 11 went to Miri last month, they found the company had nothing to do with the man.

They were told the company did not have any human resource agent in Sibu and the company was not into such job placement business.

It was then that the disappointed 11 realised they had been cheated and lodged their respective police reports on their return.

The police have arrested the suspect and placed him under remand. He is likely to face 14 cheating charges.

"When they said my application is approved and that I am entitled to receive the RM650 aid, I was happy. But when I asked them to give my IC back, the worker said he had lost it," the housewife said when met at Miri Central Police Station yesterday.
