PKR chief agrees with Masing's call for more Sarawak workers in ... Posted: 27 Jan 2014 11:33 AM PST KUCHING: State PKR vice chairman See Chee How transcended political boundary to support the call by Senior Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing for Petronas to employ more Sarawakians and award more contracts to local companies. "While I agree with Senior Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing that the dominance by the federal boys in employment in Petronas operations in Sarawak is not acceptable, the state government should be even more concerned with the control, keeping hold and fair distribution of wealth generated from the development and exploitation of the oil and gas industry in Sarawak." See said the national oil and gas company must also be transparent in the number of workers from Sarawak it employed. "Petronas had been conscientious and open with its employment of Sarawakians in the Corporation's operations in the state back in the 90s, constantly revealing figures of non-executives, managerial and technical and non-technical staff members in Sarawak. "However, there has been no such disclosure in the last decade." See said in a press statement here yesterday. The Batu Lintang assemblyman said there were now many West Malaysians employed here by Petronas, under the guise of being trainees, including security officers. "The state government should indeed demand that priority of employment be given to Sarawakians at all levels in the rank-and-file of the corporation and its contractors," added See. He recommended that one way for the state government to ensure that employment of Sarawakians and that the state could benefit from the development of the oil and gas industry was to enforce the state's participation and share in the joint ventures of engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning contracts. "As it is now, the major joint ventures are awarded to foreign and West Malaysian companies. As examples, I am referring to the latest development of the new gas fields, called Tukau Timur and Kuang North fields. "All these are sizeable gas discoveries but surprisingly, the state has not demanded any stake in the joint ventures," stressed See. Having said that, See said it was only fair for Petronas to say that Sarawakian companies do get a share in the spin-offs in Petronas operations. "However, these companies are a privileged few and hence the wealth generated is not and could not be fairly distributed to benefit more Sarawakians. "We certainly hope to see efforts by Petronas to ensure that more Sarawakians are enrolled and undertake the courses offered by its university to ensure they will be eventually take up employment opportunities and constitute the workforce in Petronas operations in Sarawak," added See. Meanwhile when contacted yesterday Petronas said they were not ready to come up with a response or statement on the issue. Johor keen to work with Sarawak to promote tourism – BorneoPost ... Posted: 22 Jan 2014 11:42 AM PST KUCHING: The Johor government is keen to cooperate with travel agencies in Sarawak to promote tourism for mutual benefit. Johor Tourism public relations and publicity officer Ahmad Nizam Ahmad said yesterday that Johor and Sarawak had many similar tourism products, especially in the eco-tourism market segment. "For instance, Johor has three Ramsar bases, namely Tanjung Piai National Park, Pulau Kukup National Park and Sungai Pulai," he told a press conference at the Asean Tourism Forum 2014 held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching here. "In the Iskandar Johor area alone, there are more than 30 Inap Desa or homestay that emphasise the way of life and cultures of local residents." Sarawak, he noted, also had great eco-tourism products such as the Sarawak Cultural Village and ethnics longhouses. He believed cooperation between both states could spur the growth of domestic travels as there were no air connectivity issues. In fact, it could also increase tourist arrivals from Johor to Sarawak and vice versa during Visit Malaysia Year 2014. "As such, we welcome visitors from Sarawak to Johor, especially in February for the Pasir Gudang World Kite Festival 2014 to be held from 19 to 25. "Other than that, visitors from Sarawak can also visit various existing and new tourism destinations in Johor such as Legoland Malaysia Resort and Hello Kitty."
