KUCHING: The amateur radio service is still important in Sarawak and Sabah, especially in the interior areas during emergency cases.

It is also use in several areas in Terengganu, Kelantan and Pahang which are still not covered by the cellular communication system.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jafaar said the advantage of the amateur radio service was that it had wider coverage, even in areas not covered by cellular and satellite telephones.

"In Sarawak and Sabah, there are still many areas where the amateur radio service is needed.

"That is why I have asked SARES to send me an official letter so that I can invite them to the ministry to demonstrate the services they can offer," he told reporters after members of the Sarawak Amateur Radio Emergency Services (SARES) called on him at his office, here, today.

KOTA KINABALU: Seputeh member of parliament Teresa Kok has come under fire for her recent video conveying Chinese New Year greetings, but which was instead, laced with political satire and innuendos.

While expressing regret over her action, Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the video titled 'Onderful Malaysia' also featured a guest who mocked Lahad Datu folks on luring tourists to the country, in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

"The feelings of the community in Sabah, especially Lahad Datu, is very deep (following the intrusion into Kampung Tanduo by terrorists from southern Philippines last year).

"I really hope action will be taken on this matter. Security of the country is very important," he told reporters when met at the Chinese New Year open house organised by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) here yesterday.

Mohd Shafie said that incident, which saw the killing of some members of the Malaysian security forces from Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia by the terrorists, was not a matter to be belittled and joked about .

In the 11.39-minute video uploaded on YouTube, one of the guests identified only as 'Master Yan Yan' also ridiculed the Lahad Datu incident when suggesting that Malaysians would get a bonus show of 'kidnapping and open fire' if they travelled to Sabah. — Bernama
