China national fined for offering sex service Posted: 07 Feb 2014 12:59 PM PST KUCHING: A woman from China was fined RM1,500, in default, two months imprisonment by the magistrates' court for offering sex service to a man yesterday. Zhu Demin, 46, who works as a masseur, appeared emotional before magistrate Maris Agan when admitting to the charge framed under Section 327B of the Penal Code. She was caught in the act when police raided a reflexology centre located in the city on Jan 29 this year at 3.45pm. Earlier on, counsel Lim Lian Kee told the court that Zhu, who came to Kuching in July last year, was cheated to work only as a masseur by her employer but in turn was forced to provide the extra service. In addition, the court also learnt that Zhu's 21-year-old daughter was also here with her but will be leaving for China today. Lim also emphasised that Zhu, who came from a poor family still living in China, came here for the purpose of earning a decent living in order to support her family. Due to her circumstances, Lim appealed for leniency in sentencing as she was a first offender and had pleaded guilty, thus saving the court the inconvenience and necessity of a trial. Inspector Yunus Sahak appeared for prosecution. To enable your comment to be published, please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks. Department to introduce more courses under training scheme Posted: 07 Feb 2014 12:57 PM PST KUCHING: The Skills Development Department (JPK) is expected to introduce more courses under the National Dual Training Scheme (SLDN). According to a press release from the Information Department, JPK director for Sarawak, Zaid Mat San disclosed this during the closing ceremony of orientation week for new apprentices at Institute of Arts Skill (IKS) based at Sarawak Cultural Village here yesterday, According to him, the department presently has 1,439 National Occupational Skills Standard (NOSS) which are used to train school levels taking up various courses under SLDN conducted throughout the country. "So far the response towards the scheme has been encouraging and the passing rate among apprentices is over 80 per cent including those in Sarawak," Zaid said. During the function, he called on the new apprentices taking up courses at IKS to be fully committed in their studies and to maintain high discipline to ensure success in completing the 10-month course. "The attitude and discipline of apprentices play an important role in ensuring success because relying on their talent to play music or dance will not them give any form of guarantee at the end of the day," he added. Meanwhile, general manager of Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV), Jane Lian Labang in her welcoming speech told the new apprentices that they were among the lucky few accepted into the scheme. Jane announced that 30 of the new apprentices will take up the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) Level 2 course in Traditional Dances, 10 in SKM Level 2 course in Contemporary Music, 20 in SKM Level 3 course in Contemporary Music, 20 in Food Preparation (starting March 1, 2014 ) and 20 in homestay operation (from March 1, 2014 ) . She said response was encouraging even though the quota for the new intakes for this year was reduced and those who had passed the SKM Level 2 course in traditional dances last year may continue to Level 3 once IKS were given the green light by the relevant authorities. This year's SLDN courses will be held at the Sarawak Cultural Village until July and tor those in the SKM Level 3 course in contemporary music, they will be getting involved in many programmes to be held at Sarawak Cultural Village and elsewhere. Upon completion of their studies, the apprentices are expected to stage the annual Gema Concert at Kuching Waterfront in October and they are also expected to perform at the Rainforest World Music Festival 2014 (RWMF 2014). Sibu police chief ACP Mohd Kamal Kordi said the post-mortem from 11.30am till 12.10pm pointed to head injury as the cause of the death. "At the moment, the case has not been classified yet because we are still in the process of gathering information," he said, adding that the police were also waiting for a report from the Forensics Unit. Mohd Kamal said the policeman who spotted the incident when he was on the way home from duty had lodged a police report. He said neither the front of the lorry nor the gate was damaged. Lanang MP Alice Lau, on the other hand, told the same press conference that the police chief had assured her through a texted message that the case would be thoroughly investigated. Form ‘Emergency Response Teams’ to assist firemen Posted: 07 Feb 2014 12:54 PM PST SRI AMAN: Every governmental organisation in the state should form an 'Emergency Response Team' at their respective workplace. The proposal was made by Assistant Minister of Agriculture Datuk Mong Dagang during an 'Emergency Response Team' Workshop near here yesterday. He said the formation of an 'Emergency Response Team' is to assist during any possible emergency situation at work. "In the event of emergencies, 'The 'Emergency Response Team' will give necessary assistance prior to the arrival of Fire and Rescue Department especially in places far from the nearest fire station," he said at the closing ceremony of an 'Emergency Response Team' Workshop near here yesterday. Mong pointed out the services of an 'Emergency Response Team' are not limited to the workplace alone but also during any emergency situations in the community. "For example in the workshop, participants were taught on how to correctly use fire extinguishers. When participants go back to their villages, they can also disseminate the knowledge to their fellow villagers," he said. In this aspect, he also urged Village Development and Security Committees (JKKKs) to form similar 'Emergency Response Teams' in their respective villages, longhouses or residential areas. "I believe this could help lessen the number of fires in the state," he said. The workshop was participated by 30 staff members from Batang Ai Hydro Power Station. Senior enforcement officer (I) Yusri Mohd Yusuf, an officer from Sri Aman Resident office Zaidi Sarkawi were among those present.
