Indonesian charged with killing fellowman Posted: 05 Feb 2014 12:03 PM PST KUCHING: An Indonesian national was yesterday charged with killing his fellow countryman on Jan 19. No plea was recorded from Bertrus, 31, who hails from Bengkayang, West Kalimantan when he appeared before Magistrate Zulhairil Sulaiman. Plea would only be taken when the case is transferred to the High Court Bertrus allegedly killed Damok Lumpen, 27, at an unnumbered house in Kampung Semeba near here between 10.30am and 11am on Jan 19. The non-bailable charge is listed under Section 302 of the Penal Code and therefore he was ordered to be further remanded pending disposal of the case. The court set March 4 for further mention of the case. According to the facts of case, Damok died of injuries on his head, arms and torso after he was attacked inside a house at a chicken and fish farm. His body was found by a housemate. Bertrus allegedly fled from the scene on a motorcycle but was arrested by police the next day at a house in Laruh Scheme, Gita. Inspector Yunus Sahak prosecuted while Bertrus was not represented by any counsel. Nine months’ jail for having stolen items Posted: 05 Feb 2014 12:02 PM PST SARIKEI: A 29-year-old man was sentenced to a total of nine months' jail after he pleaded guilty to two charges at a magistrates' court here yesterday. David Ong Sieh Song, who pleaded guilty to having in his possession a stolen motorcycle, an offence listed under Section 411 of the Penal Code, was sentenced to six months' jail. According to brief facts of the case read by the prosecuting officer, Inspector Anbarasu Gobi, Ong was found to have in his possession a Yamaha Ego motorcycle which was reported stolen from a parking space behind Honey Restaurant here on Feb 19, 2012 During the course of police investigation, Ong admitted that he bought the motorcycle for RM300 from a friend. For the second charge framed under Section 7(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapon Act 1958, Ong was sentenced to three months' jail. According to the charge, Ong on Nov 29 last year had in his possession an offensive weapon' a home-made samurai sword, an offence that may land him in jail for two years or a fine up to RM2,000 or both on conviction. Man fined for assaulting his wife Posted: 05 Feb 2014 12:01 PM PST KUCHING: A 50-year-old man was yesterday slapped with a RM800 fine in default five days' jail for assaulting his wife end of last month. Mohamad Ibrahim from Kampung Temaga in Sematan Lundu pleaded guilty in a magistrates' court. If he fails to settle the fine, he will be imprisoned for five days. The accused and his 48-year-old wife were arguing in front of a school at Pinang Jawa here at 7.40am on Jan 30 when he assaulted her. It was learnt that the reason for the argument was jealousy as the husband suspected the wife of having an extra marital affair. During the incident, Mohamad grabbed his wife's mobile phone, causing her to sustain bruises on the hand, wrist and fingers. Mohamad was convicted under Section 323 of the Penal Code for assault, a section that provides for an imprisonment term up to one year or fine or both upon conviction. Man nabbed for stealing from relative Posted: 05 Feb 2014 12:01 PM PST Posted on February 6, 2014, Thursday MIRI: Miri police arrested a 25-year-old man on Tuesday night for the alleged theft of gold jewellery and cash from his aunty's house in Lambir last week. The suspect, who is the victim's nephew, was arrested as soon as he arrived at Miri Bus Terminal from Lubok Antu at 11pm. It is learnt that the suspect stole jewellery worth about RM3,500 and RM400 cash on Jan 25 this year, but the victim only found out on Jan 27. Body of missing 12-year-old girl found Posted: 05 Feb 2014 12:00 PM PST BINTULU: The body of a 12-year-old girl, who went missing while swimming with friends in Sungai Tatau on Monday, was found yesterday morning. Wendy Kusmani's body was found floating at the spot where she was last seen before being pulled away by strong currents. "The body was found by her family members and several villagers around 5am," Tatau police chief DSP Harun Jaafar said when contacted. He said the two-day search and rescue operation involving the police, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Civil Defence Department (JPAM), Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB), villagers and Tatau Education Office personnel has been called off. Wendy's body was later taken to the Bintulu Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem. Meanwhile, Harun called on parents to take extra precautions, especially when their children go to bathe or play in the river. "Bathing in the river is common for most villagers here who live along the riverbank, but the safety of children must not be taken lightly," he stressed. He also thanked all those involved in the search and rescue operation, particularly the villagers for their cooperation. Teenager held in connection with gold theft Posted: 05 Feb 2014 11:59 AM PST KUCHING: A teenage boy was detained by police on Tuesday night in connection with the theft of RM3,000 worth of gold jewellery from a neighbour's house in Kampung Bintawa Hilir. The 15-year-old was picked up by police at his house around 10pm following a police report lodged by the neighbour, a Filipino, earlier the same day. Following his arrest, police searched the teen's bedroom and recovered all of the stolen items, which included some cash and a mobile phone, and subsequently detained him pending further investigation. A source disclosed that the neighbour had suspected the teen was behind the theft as he had previously been arrested for stealing a motorcycle.
