'Galloping' of car can happen again – PAM Sabah – BorneoPost ... Posted: 03 Feb 2014 10:25 AM PST KOTA KINABALU: The "galloping" of a car from the fourth floor to the ground at a shopping complex here will likely to happen again if the safety issue on the parapet wall design is not tackled promptly by the authorities and professionals, said Ar. Victor Wong, chairman of PAM Sabah Chapter. Wong was referring to the incident at Asia City on January 30 when a 53-year-local man was reported to have lost control of his Perodua Myvi vehicle when reversing, and crashing straight onto the "parapet" wall, before plunging four storeys down to the ground. He pointed out that under the existing building by-laws, there is no explicit requirement that all the parapet walls are to be reinforced structurally. As a standard practice, stiffeners are always being specified by the professionals to ensure that the parapet walls are generally safe to be used. However, these basic stiffeners will not be strong enough to withhold the impact of a crashing car. The worrying trend is that with so many condominium projects under construction in Kota Kinabalu and other parts of Sabah, many more car parks are being stacked vertically to satisfy the car parking requirement within the limited sizes of the building lot. Wong thus called on the local authorities to tighten the building code, to enforce that all the parapet walls are to be adequately and structurally reinforced, whether there are at the car park levels or at the balconies. He said that un-reinforced parapet walls can be highly dangerous when accidents do occur. The falling debris or brickwork can cause serious damages to properties and life. Deputy city police chief Superintendent M. Chandra said initial police investigation showed the man had lost control of the vehicle which then rammed into a wall before crashing to the ground floor. He suffered serious body injuries, including broken ribs and internal bleeding, but was reported to be in stable condition after being treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Police step up security operations in waters off east sabah ... Posted: 27 Jan 2014 03:05 PM PST KUALA LUMPUR: The police do not take lightly rumours on security threats in waters off east Sabah and will continue to step up security in the area, Bukit Aman Special Task Force (Operations/Counter Terrorism) director Datuk Mohamad Fuzi Haron said. He said proactive measures were always taken by the police by enhancing their intelligence operations, as well as monitoring, with other enforcement agencies. "We are going to enhance our intelligence collection and monitor the situation closely not only from our side, but through close collaboration with other security agencies under the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom). "There are a few attempts or threats, but we manage to intercept their intention to intrude Sabah again, but the threat is not that serious. "Whatever intelligence, information that we gather, we will verify and take action on it," he told reporters after handing over contributions for the PDRM Op Daulat here yesterday. The Malaysia Royal Police (PDRM) also continued to enhance its capabilities in terms of logistics, personnel and operations, he said, adding that, a police station had been set up at Pom Pom Island, Semporna, as part of an effort to step up security there and the neighbouring islands. Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Khalid Abu Bakar, in a prepared text of speech, which was read by Mohamad Fuzi, said the incident on the attack by terrorists in Lahad Datu clearly showed that the terrorist attacks existed everywhere in the world. "As such, the relevance of the security forces, especially in security intelligence and defence, is not something that can be belittled by any quarters," he added. — Bernama To enable your comment to be published, please refrain from vulgar language, insidious, seditious or slanderous remarks.
