KUCHING: Sarawak take on Selangor in the second round of the FA Cup today.

The Crocs certainly hope to ride on the momentum of their brilliant 3-0 victory over Sime Darby FC in the Super League last week.

But it's going to be tough if the past record provides any clue. In the previous five head-to-head clashes, Selangor have won three times, drawn once and lost only once.

Sarawak's only win was at home on Aug 22, 2012 in the Malaysia Cup competition.

Currently, Selangor also top the Super League table while Sarawak is eighth after all 12 teams have played three matches each so far.

Coach Robert Alberts' job is not made any easier by the injury list which includes Akmal Rizal, Muamer Salibasic and Mafry Balang. Captain Joseph Kalang Tie and Milorad Janjus will only find out today if they are fit to play.

Meanwhile, Alberts is apprehensive about the difficult pitch conditions of the MPPJ Stadium at Kelana Jaya (Selangor).

"We have never played there before but we have knowledge that the condition of the pitch is not so good," he said. He may opt for the Crocs to play a short passing game to try to disrupt Selangor's rhythm.

The match will kick off at 4.15pm and it will be aired live over Astro Arena (Channel 801).

FAM appoint Kim Swee as interim national coach

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 10:00 AM PST

PETALING JAYA: The Football Association of Malaysia has appointed Harimau Muda A coach, Datuk Ong Kim Swee as the interim national team (Harimau Malaya) head coach, to replace Datuk K Rajagobal whose contract expired on Dec 31.

FAM vice president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal when making the announcement yesterday said Kim Swee would be in charge of the national squad until the end of the 2015 Asia Cup Qualifier.

Malaysia, drawn in Group D, play Yemen in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), early next month.

Subahan said the decision to appoint Kim Swee, 43, was taken after talks with prospective coach Philippe Troussier from France, hit a dead end.

"Since time was short before the Qualifier, we had to make a quick decision.

I hope the appointment will end speculation about the appointment of the national coach.

"I, as the National team manager, is also confident of Kim Swee's credibility and capability to lift the status of the team," he told reporters at Wisma FAM, Kelana Jaya, here.

Subahan however, stressed that the FAM was considering a number of candidates for the job of national coach although the list had been shortlisted to 42 applicants.

He added that the FAM had not set any time frame for the appointment because 2014 is not a very busy year for the national squad on the international football stage.

Meanwhile, Kim Swee expressed confidence with the capability of his new assistant for the Harimau Muda A team, Rusdi Suparman, a former international who played for Selangor.

Rusdi would assist Kim Swee in preparing the Harimau Muda A team that will play in Australia's National Premier League (NPL) in Queensland, starting next month. — Bernama

Nicol storms into Cleveland Classic Open semis

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 09:59 AM PST

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian squash queen and world number one Datuk Nicol David stayed on course for her second consecutive title this season, after marching into the semifinals of the 2014 Cleveland Classic Open at the Cleveland Racquet Club, Ohio, Unites States.

In the quarter-finals played early today, the 30-year Penangite recorded an easy 11-5, 11-6, 11-6 win over fifth seed Camille Serme of France to book her berth.

Nicol, the seven-time world champion regarded the French women as a tough opponent as they have meet several times before.

"The rallies were long, she made me work hard but I was able to set up the opening and I was able to put the ball away," Nicol said.

Nicol who recently claimed the Tournament of Champions (ToC) title in New York will face a tricky semi-final match later today against the 2009 World Junior runner-up, Nour El Tayeb of Egypt.

The 20-year old Egyptian cruised into the semi-finals after pulling off a major upset by defeating her more illustrious compatriot Raneem El Weleily who was seeded third, 8-11, 11-9, 11-4, 12-10. — Bernama

Good finish, pity about the rest from Woods

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 09:58 AM PST

DUBAI: Tiger Woods finished with a flourish at the Dubai Desert Classic on Sunday but it was a case of too little, too late from the world number one.

The 38-year-old American birdied his last three holes at the Emirates Golf Club to close with a 71 and a six-under total that left him languishing well down the field.

It was Woods's second tournament of the year and following his missed cut at Torrey Pines, California last week, his sojourn in the Gulf will have done little to raise his confidence levels.

"Unfortunately, turned it around too late," said Woods, who won the Desert Classic twice previously in 2006 and 2008.

"I drove it great today, piped it all day. My iron game was not as sharp as I would have liked, but then I also had seven lip outs today, so that's quite a few lip outs.

"After making that quick easy fix on my grip the other day and from then on I drove it great.

"But it's been hard chipping off this rye grass as I have been so used to chipping out of Bermuda and that needs a little different technique."

From all accounts, Woods will have plenty time to work on those tricky technique adjustments as he is expected to take a month off after Dubai before honing in on the year's first major, the Masters, at Augusta National in early April.

If that is true, it means that among the tournaments he will miss will be the WGC-Match Play tournament, which he has won three times previously.

Asked what his immediate schedule would be, Woods said jokingly: "I'm going to play every week from here on to the rest of the year. How's that?" Before adding "We'll see what happens."

There had been conjecture earlier in the year that Woods would take time off after Dubai to travel to Sochi for the Winter Olympics, where his girlfriend, champion downhill skier, Lindsey Vonn was due to compete.

But due to a knee injury she pulled out of the Games and instead Woods is now planning to play in a one-day private corporate event in New Delhi on Tuesday.

A leaner schedule would also not be a surprise given the repeated injuries Woods has battled over the last few years, especially with his knees and last year with his back and wrist.

He finished the season last year complaining of tiredness and took a long winter break before re-emerging at Torrey Pines.

"The year basically gets pretty congested starting at the British Open," Woods said on Wednesday after playing in the Dubai pro-am.

"I take (the week of the Canadian Open) off but then it's Firestone (WGC-Bridgestone), then a week off, then all four playoff events, and then for the Americans there's a Ryder Cup or a Presidents Cup every year."

At least Woods made one convert in Dubai on Sunday — playing partner Pablo Larrazabal, who tweeted: "I had a nice day out there — I really enjoyed playing with Tiger Woods … He is a better guy than a golfer." — AFP
