KUCHING: The state is banking on three players to spearhead Sarawak's tennis challenge for Sukma XVII to be held in Perlis this year.

Aslina Chua, Mohd Assri Merzuki and Ariez Elyas Deen Hesham are the trio touted to lead the state contingent. All three players are currently undergoing training in the United States.

Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) president Dato Patrick Liew is confident the players can deliver gold for Sarawak.

"These players are our current cream of the crop. I believe that they have enough firepower and ammunition to see off the challenges of other players from the other states," he said.

Four gold medals are targetted for the state team for this year's Sukma in June.

Sarawak last competed in Sukma tennis in 2010 winning three gold, five silver and two bronze medals.

The team did not contest the tennis competition in Sukma 2011. Tennis was not included in Sukma 2012 and 2013.

Liew hoped that the New Chinese Year of the horse will bring more prosperity and success to the association.

"We are of course constantly finding ways to improve ourselves as an association. Work will start as soon as possible," he pledged.

The association will also be organising more international tournaments this year.

Liew was speaking to reporters during Chinese New Year open house celebration at his residence here last Friday.

Posted: 29 Jan 2014 11:32 AM PST

KUCHING: Counterfeiters are not only targeting international brands. They are also replicating local ones such as `Starsport', the brand used by the Sarawak football team and sponsored by the brand owner Lea Sports Centre.

A Lea Sports Centre spokesman said this was discovered on Jan 25 at the Sarawak State Stadium before the Super League match between Sarawak and Kelantan.

A team of enforcement officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism (KPDNKK), lead by Fauzi Baharuddin, inspected traders plying their trade in make-shift stalls and found some of them selling counterfeit Sarawak football jerseys.

These jerseys were immediately seized.

"Offering to sell imitation goods is an offence under the Trade Description Act 2011," said KPDNKK state enforcement chief Mohd Nor Musa.

"Under the Trade Description Act 2011, those convicted can be fined up to a maximum of RM10,000 for each counterfeit item or imprisonment of not more than three years."

He said his officers would continue to monitor traders at the stadium on match days to ensure they all toe the line.

Lea Sports Centre's spokesman said: "During Sarawak home matches, our company has stalls set up that offer original Sarawak jerseys for sale within the stadium vicinity.

"When you buy an original Sarawak jersey you are actually a true fan of the Sarawak team as some of the profit go back into sponsoring the Sarawak football team".
